GEORGE H. HESS, or LA GRANGE PARK, ILLINOIS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Applicationiiletl April 14, ma Serial No. 761,075.
PatentedJ an. 13, 1914.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, Gnonon H. Hrss, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at La ,Grange Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, more articularly,
to improvements in machines or washing; dishes; and my objects, generally stated, are
to provide a novel, simple and economical construction of dish-washing machine by which dishes may be quickly and effectively cleansed, by which the machine may be quickly charged with, and emptiedof, dishes, and the machine readily cleansed of accumulations therein, to render it sanitary, and,
' generally, to so improve upon constructions t the arrow.
of this character that they .will be better adapted .to perform their work quickly, efffectually and atminimum expense.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view ofa machine constructed in accordance with my invention, the section being taken at the line 1 on Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and Fig.- 2, a section taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of My improved machine is formed with a shell or casing 3, which is preferably of cylindrical form and supported in any suitable manner, as upon legs L, the-front end 5 of the shell 3 containing an opening 6,
preferably of circular contour excepting at its bottom edge which straight and equipped with a door 7 for afiordingaccess to the interior of the machine for charging the latter with dishes and removing them-- therefrom, as hereinafter stated, the rear end of the shell 3 being closed, as indicated at 8. A tray for receiving the dishes to be washed is represented at 9, this tray, which has a perforated bottom 9*, being removably supported in the shell 3, and preferably to extend entirely below the center line of the.
' latter, as hereinafterexplained. 1
In accordance with my invention, the washing-water would be charged into the shell 3, as through an'inlet 10, and the washing of the dishes effected by causirfg the water in the shell to be repeatedly ifted and poured upon the dishes in the ray 9, the
means which prefer toemploy for this pur; pose comprising a series of pockets 11 extending longitudinally of the casing 3 and" within the latter, and arranged concentrically o f the casing 'and spaced therefrom a suffic ent distance to afford clearance, the
pockets.11 being rigidly connected at their rear ends with a head 12 fixed on a shaft 13 journaled in a bearing 13 in the end 8 of the shell, and at their front ends with a flanged-rim 14 which rests at its annular flange 15 on grooved wheels 16 journaled in the casing 3 0,11 pins 17 provided on the front end of the, casing. The pockets 11, rim 14 and head 12 thus form a unitary rotatable member having pockets about its inner surface with openings in its side wall intermediate said pockets, which niay be rotated in the casing 3 in any desirable manner, as by means of a crank-handle l8 fixed on ashaft- 19 connected with the shaft 13 by sprockets 20 and 21 and a chain 22. r
In the operation of the machine, the shaft 13 is rotated to the right in Fig. 1 thus causing water to be carried up in the pockets 11, and upon passing abovethe center of the shaft, the water willdischarge upon the dishes (not shown) in the tray 9, for pera screen 23 of general cylindrical form, but
preferablyimpen along its bottom portion, which is located within the annular series of pockets. 11 and extends lengthwise of the machine, the rear end of the screen 23 being connected with a flange 24 provided on a stationary plate 25 supported on the inner end of theshaft 13, the front end of the screen 23 with. the inwardly-extending flange 26 of a member of L-shape in crosssection and fitting'in the opening 6, and the lower edges of the screen with angle-irons 27 spaced apart and extending from end to end of the casing 3 and connected at their opposite ends with the front wall 5;of the casing and the plate 25, respectively. n
Below the tray 9 is provided atrou'gh 28, perforated as indicated at '29, and a apted to strain the water before it is again lifted by the water-elevating pockets 11, the
trough 28 extending lengthwise of the machine and being preferably supported, at flanges 30 thereon on the angle-irons 27, this feature of my construction serving to cause the water which is discharged upon the dishes in the tray9 to be comparatively free of the particles washed from the dishes.
It Will be readily understood from the foregoing that by constructing a machine in accordance with my invention, the dishes in the tray 9 may be not only quickly washed, but by reason of the elimination of any obstruction through the center of the machine, may be.packed into the tray 9 externally of the machine and the tray of dishes then placed in the machine as illustrated, by introducing the tray through the opening 6 in the shell 3, which is a matter of importance in a machine of this type, as it not only expedites the washing operation, but also minimizes the danger of breaking the dishes. Furthermore, the tray and strainer-trough 28 being removable, theseparts of the machine may be readily Withdrawn from the machine and cleaned, thus rendering the machine highly sanitary.
A It may be added that after the dishes have been washed,as hereinbefore explained, the washing-water is preferably drawn oil from the casing 3 through a discharge-pipe 31, which preferably empties into a sink, and
the casing 3 thereupon charged with rinsing water which is discharged upon the dishes in the tray 9 by the operation of the machine in the manner hereinbefore described.
Whilel have illustrated and described a specific embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto, as the same may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of my invent-ion.
by Letters Patent, is+
l. In a dish-washingmaehine, the combination of a housing containing an opening in one end through which the dishes to be washed are introduced into the housing, means for supporting the dishes in said What I claim as new and desire to secure 'housing, and a series of water-elevating pockets rotatably supported in said housing.
2; In a dish-Washing machine, the combination of a housing containing an opening in one end through which the dishes to be washed are introduced into the housing, means for supporting the dishes in said housing, and a rotatable water-liftingpocket-equipped member journaled in said housing and open at its front end to avoid obstruction to the introduction of the dishes into said housing through the opening in the latter.
3. In a dish-washing machine, the combination of a housing containing an opening in one end through which the dishes to be washed are'introduced into the housing, means for supporting the dishes in said housing, and a rotatable water-liftingpocket-equipped member journaled at its rear end in said housing and provided at itsfront endwith a rim-section registering with said opening and at which rim-section sald member 1s rotatably supported at its front .end in said housing, for the purpose set forth. l

5. In a dish-washing machine, the combination of a housing containing an opening in one end through which the dishes to be washed are introduced into the housing,
means for supporting the dishes in said housing, a shaft journaled in said housing, a rotatable water-lifting-pocket-equipped member connected at one end with said shaft and containing an opening at its front end registering with the opening in said housing, and a stationary perforated member supported at one end on said shaft and upon which the water falls before it reaches the dishes, for the purpose set forth.
