MINE-CAR.
No. 926,446. Specification. of
Application lcd October 29 To all whom it may concern:
Be it kn own that we, THOMAS W'. VnAvER and CLYDE B. Nnavna citizens ol the United States, and residents ot 'l`unnelton, in the county ot Preston and State ot' 'West Virginia, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Mine-(lars, of which the Aliollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in mine cars, and more particularly such as dumping cars or the like, and cach of which in general is provided with a trigger, a locking member adapted to engage a catch to hold the end gate or door ol' a car normally in a closed position, and a movable link connecting the trigger an d the locking member, means being provided whereby the trigger can be actuated to release the locking member vfrom the catch.
The object ot the invention is to provide a device of the class described, simple and serviceable in construction, which will securely lock the end gate of a ear, and which will be automatically released when the car has reached a predetermined point, so that the contents of the car will be easily discharged.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing an embodiment of our invention applied to a mine car; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged. perspective view showing our invention in detail and with the gate closed.
In the speeiiic form shown in the drawings, 1 represents a car of any common or preferred form, having an end gate 2. Extending around the end of the car and being substantially U-shaped in form, is an elongated strip 3, the latter having its ends 4 extending above the upper edge of the car. The ends 4 have openings 5 extending therethrough which constitute bearings adapted to receive the ends oi' a support 6, preferably circular in cross section. Cotter ins 7 serve to secure the support at the endjs 4 of the elongated strip.
Located on the gate 2 are members or straps 8, the latter having their upper ends 9 curved over the support 6, so that the latter will movably carry the gate. Arranged on the outside of the end gate is a bracket 10 Letters Patent. Patented June 29, 1909.
, 1908. Serial No. 460,019.
having outwardly disposed extensions 11 provided with registering openings 12. Pivotally secured between the extensions 12 by means o'l a pin v13 is a trigger 1-1, preferably in the lorm. o'l a bell crank lever, and having its upper end 15 extending above the support 6. The lower end 16 of this trigger is outi Tardly disposed and bi'l'urcated, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2 ot the drawings.
Slidably secured to the gate is a link 17 having its upper portion 18 outwardly disposed and terminating between the bifurcated ends 1.6 ol the trigger, where it is pivotally held by means of a rivet or pin 19. Guides 20, secured to the gate, serve to hold this link in place. The lower end 21 ol the link is cut away and broadened to lorm a foot. Located on the link near the lower end thereof, is an extension 22 having an opening extending therethrough Pivotally secured at this extension by means el a rivet 28 or the like, which extends through its upper bifurcated portion, is a locking member 24, Secured to the loor of the ear is a catch 25 which has its outer end 26 upwardly disposed and adapted to receive the lower end of the locking member 241, so that the end gate of the car will be held against accidental displacement.
Located at any suitable point adjacent to the track is a stop 27, which is adapted to engage the upper end 15 of the trigger to actuate the same when the ear has reached a predetermined point, at which its contents are to be discharged, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
In the form shown, the stop is secured to the frame of a building and extends downwardly therefrom. Jhon the trigger' has come in'contact with the stop, it is so actuated that through the medium of the link 17, the locking member 24 is drawn out of engagement with the catch 25, and the end gate, against which constant pressure is being brought to bear by the weight of the contents of the car, will swing open and permit the discharge of the same.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination with a mine car, a catch on the ear a swinging end gate, a link slidably mounted on said end gate, a trigger pivotally secured to said link and said gate, and a locking member pivotally carried by said link and adapted to engage said catch to hold said gate in a locked position.
2. In combination With a mine car, a Catch on the oar a swinging end gate, a link slidably mounted on said end gate, a trigger pivotally secured to said link and said gate, and a locking member pivotally carried by said link and adapted to engage said catch to hold said gate in a locked positionJ and means adapted to engage said trigger for actuating the same whereby said gate Will be released to permit the discharge of the contents of the ear.
3. In a mine ear provided With a swinging
