Patented .rune 29,1909.
MAUDIE HANEY, OF QUINTON, ARKANSAS.
SWILL-GAN.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1909.
Application led July 16, 1908. Serial No. 443,906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAUDIE HANEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quinton, in the county of White and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Swill-Cans, of which the folowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a receptacle, having special reference to a receptacle which is especially ada ted to contain garbage.
An object o this invention 1s to provide a receptacle of this character which 1s practically hermetically sealed at all times to prevent the escape of disagreeable odors.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character with a means whereby the lid may be raised by the operation of the foot so that the hands may be free in order to pour the waste into the receptacle when o ened.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an auxiliary opening whereby small particles of vegetable matter may be inserted in the can without opening the top thereof.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the speciiic structure shown and described ma be made within the scope of the claims wit out de arting from the spirit of the invention.
n the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete receptacle, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing the auxiliary opening of the receptacle, Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section of the complete device.
Referring now to the drawings 10 designates a receptacle which is preferably cylindrical and which is rovided ntermediately of one of its sides wit a diagonally u wardly extending s out 11 of a reasonably large diameter. he u er end of the spout 11 is provided with a 1d 12 which com rises a strip of metal circularly formed as s own at 13 which iits into the end of the s out 11 and carries upon its outer edge a dis 14 which lits over and extends beyond the upper edge of the spout 11. A suitable handle 15 is d1s posed upon the outer face of the disk 14 for the purpose of withdrawing the lid 12 from the spout 11. The receptacle 10 is provided With a cover 16 upon its upper open end which is hinged as at 17 to the top edge thereof. The back of the receptacle 10 carries a metal plate 18 which is extended beyond the upper extremity of the rece tacle 1() and is provided with a groove 19 tirough which is adapted to pass a cable 2() which extends forwardly and downwardly to the central portion of the cover 16 where it is secured in an eye 21 carried upon the upper face of the cover 16. The cable 2O extends downwardly back of the receptacle 1() where it is secured to the outer extremity of a foot lever 22 fastened to the receptacle 10. The foot lever 22 is hin yedly supported upon a metallic strip whic i is riveted to the rear side of the receptacle l() and admits of the extension of the lever 22 rearwardly therefrom.
In use, the operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to deposit vegetable matter or small particles of waste Inatter of like character the cover 12 is withdrawn from the spout 11 and the waste is deposited therein. The spout 11 is disposed at such an angle that it renders it more easy of access than the opening in the top ofa can of ordinary construction. If a large quantity of large ieces oi' refuse are deposited in the receptac e 10 the foot lever 22 is depressed and the cover 16 is raised throu h the action of the cable 20. As soon as the matter is de osited in the receptacle 10 the cover 16 wil return to its normal closed position by its own weight.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the character described comprising a receptacle, an upwardly and diagonally disposed spout upon one side of said receptacle, a cover for said spout, a hinged cover for said receptacle, a metallic plate secured at the back of said receptacle extending upwardly beyond the upper edge of said receptacle, a cable secured to the central portion of the cover and passed over said metallic plate and a foot lever disposed on the rear side of said receptacle near the bottom thereof t0 support the extremity of said cable.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a receptacle, a spout upwardly extended from one side of said receptacle, a cover detachably positioned upon the outer extremity of said spout, a hin ed cover carried by said receptacle, a metalic plate disposed at the back of said receptacle and extended upwardly beyond said cover, a, cable secured to the central portion of said cover and extended backwardly over the upper edge of said plate and a foot lever hingedly disposed upon the rear side of said receptacle adjacent the bottom. thereof, the opposite extremity ol' said cable secured to the outer end of said lever for raisingV said cover at times.
In testimony WliereolI I aliix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
