FRITZ BECK, OF DUMONT, NEW JERSEY.
PNE UMA'IIC DEVICE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1909.
Application filed February 16, 1907. Serial No. 357,779.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Fnrrz BECK, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, and residing at Dumont, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pneumatics adapted to be used in connection with gasvalves in the manner shown in U. S. Patent to Harris, No. 765,339, July 19, 1904-, gas burners; and has for its object to provide devices to produce, at will and with one hand, air pressure or air suction through a main passage therein; a further object being to provide such a device which consists of a hollow elastic or compressible ball, means for holding in one hand for manipulation and means for insuring the proper direction of air referred to, and a still further object being to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and operation, well adapted to the purpose for which it is intended and comparatively inexpensive.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts in each of the views, and in which Figure 1, is a sectional elevation of one form of embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2, is a View thereof in the direction of the arrow w; Fig. 3, is a view, similar to Fig. 1, of another form thereof; Fig. 4, is a view of Fig. 3 in the direction of the arrow y; Fig. 5,is a view, similar to Fig. 1, of still another form of my invention; and Fig. 6, is a View of Fig. 5 in the direction of the arrow 2.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, 1 have shown an elastic or compressible ball 1, mounted in a holder 2, provided with a main air passage 3 and a supplemental or auxiliary air passage 1 and the holder 2 is also provided with wings 5 which serve as rests or braces for the fingers of the operator, and in this form of construction, I also employ a support 7 for the ball 1 to prevent collapsing of one half thereof when the other half is being compressed, and the ball 1 is preferably secured to the support 7 and holder 2 by means of a plug 3 provided with a pas sage registering with the passage 3.
in Figs. 3 and '-il-, 1 have shown a modification of the holder 2 and in which the same is carried downwardly over one side of the ball 1, as shown at 2*, adapting the holder to the palm of the operator, and the member 2 is provided with a plate 8, which serves the same purpose as the support 7 in Figs. 1. and 2.
In Figs. 5 and (3, l have shown a modification of the construction of the ball 1 as well as the holder 2, over that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in that the ball is hemispherical and secured, by cement or otherwise, to a. hemispherical holder Q, composed of hard and unyielding material and the linger rests 5 are also slightly modified to adapt them to the said form.
he method of use of the forms shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 6 will be apparent by noting the position of the thumb 0 and fingers (Z, (Z and d and, if at this time, the thumb is forced upwardly and the finger (Z kept tightly over the passage 1, air is forced from the ball 1 with a pressure corresponding to the force of the thumb pressure and, when the ball 1 is so collapsed, if the finger cl is placed tightly over the passage 4 and the pressure of the thumb released, the ball resumes its normal shape and air is drawn into the same with the consequent suctional pressure at the end of the main passage 3; also, if the ball 1 be collapsed in the manner stated but the finger (Z is not against the passage 4-, the air is forced through the said passage and no pressure results in the passage 3 butthe suctional pressure therein occurs upon placing the finger d over the passage 4 and releasing the thumb pressure as previously stated.
The use of the form shown in Figs. 3 and 1- is substantially similar to that described except that the holder 2 is held in the palm of the hand of the operator and the fingers are in the positions shown, the'collapsing pressure in this case being by means of the fingers (Z (Z and (Z instead of by the thumb in the forms heretofore described.
It will be apparent that the ball 1 and holder 2 may be composed of any suitable material and of any desired conformation and various changes in and modifications of the forms shown and described may be made to accomplish the result desired without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A pneumatic controlling device, comprising in combination with a bulb, an inelastic shield partially surrounding said bulb, and conformed to the shape of the palm, finger grips formed on said shield, an air passage through said shield and communicating with said bulb, a secondary air passage communicating with said bulb and so located with reference to said grips as to cause it to fall beneath the natural pressure of a finger.
2. A pneumatic controlling device comprising in combination with a bulb, an inelastic shield interiorly conformed to said bulb and eXteriorly conformed to the palm of a hand, finger grips formed at proper points on said exterior, an air passage through said shield and communicating with said bulb, a secondary passage communicating with said bulb and so located with reference to said finger grips as to fall beneath the natural pressure of a finger.
3. A pneumatic controlling device, comprising in combination with a bulb, an inelastic shield partially surrounding said bulb, said shield being interiorly conformed to the shape of said bulb and exteriorly conformed to the shape of a hand, finger grips suitably located on said exterior, an air passage communicating with said bulb, the interior terminus of said passage forming a head which also secures said bulb, and a secondary passage communicating with said bulb, said passage being so located with reference to one of said finger grips as to fall beneath the natural pressure of a finger.
4;. A pneumatic controlling device, comprising in' combination with a bulb, an in elastic shield surrounding said bulb on those portions which receive the palm, said bulb being interiorly conformed to said palm, a main passage communicating With said bulb through said shield, a secondary passage also communicating with said bulb through said shield, and finger grips located on said shield, to cause one of the fingers of the hand to fall on said secondary passage to control at will the admission or expulsion of air through said main passageway.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing my invention 1 have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 14th day of February 1907.
