To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. Mns- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roseville, in the county of Placer and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt- Markers, of which the following is a specifi.- cation.

My invention relates to improvements in skirt markers, and the primary object thereof is to secure a quick, more accurate and convenient method for determining the length of ladies skirts, by marking the same adjacent the bottom.

Another object contemplated by the invention is the rovision of means for obtaining a rapid anc thorough adjustment of the parts, and more especia ly the crayon carrier and the rod upon which said device is mounted, thus obviating the manipulation of set screws and other equivalent adjustment securing means.

To the accomplishment of the recited object and others cordinate therewith, the preferred embodiment of the invention re.- sides in that construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and embraced within the scope of the appended claim.

Referring more particularly to the drawings for a detailed description of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a circular stool top constructed preferably of wood and having fastened thereto by means of the screws G a trio of arms 7 arranged at angles` of approximately 12() degrees. Depending from the junction of the arms 7 is a comparatively short shaft S and a rabbeted extension thereof' 9, which latter is designed to be .seated in a suitable bore 10 formed in the central part l 1 of the legs 12, provision being made for the vertical adjustment of the top 5 by the emloyment of a thumbscrew 13, as clearly exiiibited in Fig. 2 of the accompanying draw- It will be noted in this connection ings.

ln conjunction with the aforesaid device, and as necessary adjuncts thereto l utilize means for adjusting the marker in both vertical and horizontal planes. This result is attained by the use of a rod 15 terminally enlarged as at 16 and having an extremital collar 17 loosely mounted on the shaft 8 and disposed to permit a rotative movement of the rod 1 5 relative to said shaft. Disposed at right angles with respect to the rod 15 and extending vertically therefrom is a second rod 18 upon which is mounted the marking mechanism. This mechanism comprises in its construction and arrangement a head 19) equipped with a longitudinally extending passage 20 and hollowcd or eut out as at 2l to serve as a space for the lever 22 having a button 23 on its upper terminal and a block 211 with an outer serrated face 25 on its lower terminal, the said lever 22 being fulcrumed intermediate said terminals and obviousl)r at its lower proximal end by the pin 26. In order to give the desired tension to the lever 22 l'. scat a coil spring 2T beneath the upper terminal thereof and within the space 21. Arranged mediallwv of the head 19 and extending lateralljV therefrom is an arm 2S provided with spring clips 29 for holding the crayon 30. A similar locking mechanism is inclosed within the lower .head portion 31 of the vertically extending rod 1S.

In practical uso the rod 1S is adjusted along the rod 15 and then the head 19 carrying the crayon 30 is placed at the desired height, when the said rod 15 is free to rotate about the skirt as has been hcreinbefore set forth. By employing this novel form of frictional locking means very little time is required in obtaining tho necessarjY adjustment of the marker to the rod 1S. As will appear manifest it is simply necessarjY to depress the button 23 and release the block 24; from engagement with the bar 1S or 15, as the case may be, and move` the head longitudinally of the bar until the desired position is attained, when pressure on said button is released.

llt should be understood that in its broader aspect the invention eomprohends the employment not only of thc various means described, but of equivalent means for performing the recited functions. lfhilc the arrangement shown is thought, at the present time, to be preferable, it is desired to reserve the right to effect such modifications and variations thereof as may come fairly Within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

In a skirt marker, the combination ol a vertically adjustable stool, a horizontally disposed rod rotatably mounted on said stool, a vertically arranged crayon holder, a springpressed frictional locking means carried by said last mentioned rod, and similar means carrying said crayon holder, the said means respectively permitting` an adjustment of said vertically arranged rod with respect to said horizontally arranged rod, and said marker relative to the vertically disposed rod, each of said means comprising a head mounted for slidable movement on one of said rods, each head having a housing formed therein, each of said housings having an opening on opposite sides and at opposite ends thereo'l', a lever fulcrumed at its proximal end within said casing, means carried by one terminal of said lever and extending through one ol' said openings for frictionally engaging said rod, and a spring seated Within said housing and adapted to normally force the other terminal ol' said lever outwardly through the other opening.
