Be it known that I, J osnrn H. Scnwnicn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Manifolding Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my new manifolding device, showing the entry, transferring, and record sheets in operative position; Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on the line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 33, Fig. 1 Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail sectional view on the line 4-4, Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail plan view, showing the transferring and record sheet-holding members in raised position; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail sectional view on the line 66, Fig. 5, showing the transferring-sheet holding members in open position; and Fig. 7 is a side elevational view, partly in section, showin the shit table entrysheet carrier, the shiftable indicator, and the interlocking means therebetween.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in manifolding devices, and particularly in manifolding devices adapted to be used in making copies of merchandise bills, etc.

While my device may be used in making copies of any papers when written by hand, it is especially adapted for use in, and its operation is herein shown and described in connection with, making copies of merchandise bills when written by hand, such bills being transferred by means of carbon or other transferring paper on to what I call a record sheet, which, when completely filled, is adapted to be removed from the apparatus and preserved, preferably in a loose-leaf holder or the like, so that a compact and easily accessible record of all such bills or other papers may be kept, an object of my invention being to fully utilize the record sheet, a bill or bills being transferred thereonto until the same is completely filled, and thus not only is the entire surface of each record sheet adapted to be utilized, but also the number of record sheets is economized; and as the figures entered in the dollars and cents columns of the several original bills will be transferred on to said record sheet or sheets in like columns, the complete addition l on said record sheet or sheets of the figures l l I l l l l Specification of Letters Patent.

I have found that in using the inanifolding device shown in my application for patent, filed May 11, 1908, Serial No. 432,268, it has frequently occurred that the operator would remove from the device the entry-sheet or bill on which the original entries had been entered without shifting the indicator to indicate the line of last entry thereon and the line of first entry on the record-sheet for the next succeeding hill, the result being that the next or succeedingbill would be placed in the device over the record sheet at a place already filled with the entries from said first bill, the entries from said second bill being thus mixed or intermingled on said record sheet with the entries from said first bill thereon, to the consequent loss or injury of the record sheet.

Another object, and perhaps the main obj ect, of my invention is, therefore to provide means whereby the entry-sheet or bill is firmly and tightly gripped in its carrier and cannot be released or removed from the device until after the operator has first shifted the indicator to a new position.

Another object of my invention is to provide a simple and easily operated device of the kind described and to improve generally upon devices of the kind stated.

With these objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction of the several parts of my device, and in the novel arrangemcnt and combination of the same, all as will hereinafter be described and afterwards pointed out in the claims.

Hinged to the ase-plate 1 by hinges 7 and fitting in said groove 2 is an elongated plate or strip 8 extending substantially the length of said baseplate 1. Preferably hinged to said plate 8 by hinges 9 is a similar elongated plate or strip 10 fitting over, and having substantially the same dimensions as, strip 8, plate 10 being adapted to cooperate with plate 8 to hold the carbon or other transferring-sheet B therebetween and in operative position on said base-plate with respect to said recordsheet A. On the under side or face of plate 8 and preferably at the lower end thereof is secured a spring-catch 11, which is adapted to engage the upper strip or plate 10 to nor mally hold said stri s 8 and 10 together.

On the upper sid fe or face of plate 10 and preferably at the lower end thereof is a spring-pressed reciprocatory latch-member .12, which is adapted to cooperate with and engage a keeper 13 mounted on said baseplate 1. This latch-member 12 has a slotand-pin connection 14 with plate 10 and is normally held in engagement with said keeper 13 by a spring 15, this latch or looking-device being adapted to lock the lates 8 and 10 in lowered position, in which owered position said plates depress said clips 3 and 4 into their recesses 6 to firmly secure said sheet A in proper position on said base-plate. Rotatably mounted on a stud 16 on plate 10 is a knurled knob or manipulating-handle 17, the under side of this knob adjacent the latch-member 12 being under-cut and provided with a depending pin or stud 18 which works in a lateral slot 19 in the adjacent edge of said latch-member 12. Thus, by turning knob 17 whenever it is desired to raise said strips 8 and 10 to remove a record-sheet A and insert a new record-sheet, the latchmember 12 will be disengaged from the keeper 13 and said plates or strips may then be brought to raised position, as shown in Fig. 5, the peculiar shape of the said undercut portion of the knob 17 limiting its rotation by contacting with the edge of said latch-member 1 2.

20 indicates studs preferably at the top and bottom ends of said plate 10, in which is mounted a preferably squared-bar 21, this bar being provided with a series of ratchet-teeth 22 on its outer face.

Shiftably mounted on bar 21 is a block 23, which has secured thereon a carrier plate 24 provided with a rib 25 lengthwise thereof and with a lateral flange 26 at its inner end, and on which plate the entry-sheet O is adapted to rest, said rib and flange being adapted to properly position the same thereon. On said plate 24 are lugs or ears 27, in which is pivotally mounted a rod or bar 28, and on rod or bar 28 is fastened a clamping-member or clip 29 adapted to cooperate with the plate 24 to hold the entry sheet C firmly in fixed operative position over said transferring-sheet B and recordsheet A, a suitable spring 30 being provided to resiliently and normally hold said clip 29 in clamping position.

The end 31 of bar 28 is preferably squared and is bent at right angles and extends for some distance over and parallel with bar 21, see particularly Figs. 1 and 7. On this end or extension 31 of bar 28 is slidably and adj ustably mounted a sleeve or tube 32 having on its inner end a member 32 having an opening therethrough corresponding with the cross-section of extension 31, this sleeve or tube 32 being adapted to be held in different adjusted positions along the length of said extension 31 bya set-screw 33 adapted to engage depressions or perforations 34 in said extension 31, for purposes hereinafter appearmg.

Pivotally mounted in a lug 35 on block 23 are oppositely-disposed pawls 36 and 37 which are normally held in engagement with the teeth 22 on bar 21 by a spring 33 interposed between the thumb-pieces 39 on said pawls 36 and 37, said pawls 36 and 37 forming substantially, with said ratchet-tooth, 9

a double-acting lock and being adapted to firmly and securely hold said block 23 in its different positions along the length of said bar 21. Also shiftably and adjustably mounted on bar 21 is a block or member 40, which carries an inwardly-projecting pointer or indicator 41, see particularly Fig. 1. This block 40 has also a pair of spring-pressed pawls 42-43 similar to said pawls 36 and 37 hereinbelore described and adapted to engage said ratchet-teeth 22, whereby said block 40 and the said indicator 41 carried thereby may be firmly and securely held in different or adjusted. positions along said bar 2 1.

On the upper end of block 40 is an up standing lug or projection 44, which has secured thereon a preferably pointed or rounded pin 45 adapted to cooperate with, and fit in the lower end of, said sleeve or tube 32 on the end of said extension 31, whereby I provide what 1 term a locking device between the original entry-sheet holder and the indicator to prevent the said original entry-sheet being withdrawn or released from its carrier until the indicator has'been moved or shifted to a new position on bar 21 and out of engagement with said. sleeve 32, for when said projection 45 is inserted in the end of said sleeve 32, the extension or end 31 of bar 28 cannot be tilted upwardlyhence the bar 28, on which said clampingmember or clip 29 is fastened, cannot be rocked, and the entry-sheet O cannot be released and withdrawn or removed from its carrier, but is firmly and securely held thereon.

Obviously a similar clip or clips might be provided at other places along the edge o't' said baseplate for the same purpose, if desired; or a similar clip might be there provided, it desired, to merely hold the free edge of the record-sheet A against the base-plate.

Suitable rests 47 having cushions or bull'- ers 48 thereon are preferably mounted on said base-plate 1 near the top and. bottom thereof and adjacent the hinged plates 8 and 10, against which the ends 01' said studs 20 may contact when the said plates 8 and 10 are raised.

To limit the extreme upper position 01' the entry-sheet carrier-block 23, [or purposes hereinafter stated, I preferably provide the bar 21 with a series of perforations 19 in its upper end, with which is adapted to cooperate a stop or screw 50, and against which screw 50 the upper end of block 23 is adapted to contact.

From the above description, the operation and use 01 my device is clear. The record-sheet A is first placed in position on the base-plate 1, one edge thereof being inserted under the hooked portions 5 of clips 3 and 1. The carbon or other transl'erring sheet B is placed between plates or strips 8 and 10 and the same locked together by the catch 11; the said strips or plates 8 and 10 are then lowered and locked in closed position by the latch-member 12 engaging with its keeper 13, and in such lowered, locked position, not only do said strips or plates hold said transferring-sheet B in operative position relative to said record-sheet A, but also depress said clips 3 and 4 and firmly hold said record-sheet A in position on said base-plate, the free edges 01' said sheets A and B being held down. against the baseplate 1 by means of the said clip 46.

Usually merchandise bills, such as the sheet C, have a space at the top thereof in which is printed the name of the dealer, his address, and other descriptive items, such space being shown at c on said sheet C. Depending upon the width of said space 0, the sleeve 32 is adjusted on the extension 31, so that, on the indicator-block 1-0 abutting or contacting thereagainst, the space between the pointer 41 and the rib 25 of plate 24: is just equal to said space 0, the pointer 11 being adapted to indicate the line of first entry for the entries to be placed on said bill C, so that the same will be transferred on to an unused portion of the record-sheet A therebeneath. The bill C is shown herein in a position where the items or entries placed thereon will be transl'erred on to the upper, unused portion of said record-slmet A, the pointer 11 indicating the top ol said unused portion and the line of first entry l'or the items to be placed on said bill C, said pointer ll being properly spaced from the plate 241 to accommodate the space 0, and in which position the said pin 415 is in engagement with sleeve and said bar 28 and clamping-clip 21) cannot be rocked. When said bill C has been used to the required number ol' entries or items, as the sheet (3, as bel'ore described, cannot now be withdrawn or removed from its said holder, the pawls 42- 43 on the block 40 carrying the pointer 41 are released from ongagement with said ratchet-teeth 22, and the indicator 41 moved along said bar 21 to a position indicating the line of last entry on said bill and also indicating the line 01 lirst entry on said record sheet [or the next suc ceeding bill, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the pin 45 being drawn out ol engagement with said sleeve 32, whereupon said bar 28 may be rocked and said sheet C withdrawn or removed from the device. A second bill C may now be placed in said entry-sheet holder, and the operator releases pawls 36 and 37 on carrier-block 23 and shifts said block with its entry -sheet holder along said bar 21 into engagcment with said pin 15, and so on, the same series ol' operations being gone through with until the entire surl'acc of sheet A is utilized. .Vhcn one sideol' a sheet Ais lilled,the plates 8 and. 10 may be readily jointly unlocked from the base-plate 1 by rotating said knob 17, and. said sheet A reversed, in order that both sides thereol' may be used, it desired, and the plates 8 and 10 again locked in closed position with respect to said baseplate. When sheet A is completely filled, it may be quickly removed from the device and a new sheet placed in proper position, the sheets A when lilled and removed l'rom the device being adapted to be bound in a looseleal' holder, whereby a compact and easilyaccessible record or day-book is formed. vvhenever it is desired to insert a new carbon or other transl'erring-shcct B, the plates 5 and 10 may be easily un'l'astened and a new sheet B readily inserted and locked in place. I have shown herein a sheet D between the strips 8 and 10 and over said carbon sheet B. This sheet D is preferably a sheet ol,' heavy tissue paper and is adapted to be used merely as a render-0mg or protective sheet for said carbon-sheet B; and it will be readily understood that this sheet D may be dispensed with, if desired. It is obvious that the said sleeve 32 may be adjusted along said extension 31 to keep said indicator 411 any predetermined distance from the original entrysheet holder, so that bills with varying widths 01' space 0 may be taken care of 011 my device; and it will also be obvious that the sore 51) may be adjusted in any ol' said perforations 49', depending upon the size of the record-sheet, to prevent the carrier-block 23 and indicator 41 being shifted upwardly along said bar 21 to a point Where the items entered on a bill C would not be transferred onto the record-sheet. It is thus seen that in using my device the transferring of the items or entries of two bills C on to the same space of a record-sheet A Will not readily occur, and that I provide a simple, easily-oper ated device which fully accomplishes the objects before stated.

It will further be understood that minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described Without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination With a base, of means movably mounted on said base and adapted to removably hold an entry-sheet thereon, and means also movably mounted on said base and adapted to engage with said holding-means to prevent the removal of said entry-sheet; substantially as described.

2. In a device of the kind described, the combination With a base, of means adapted to releasably hold a transferring and a record sheet in operative relation thereon, means movably mounted on said base and adapted to removably hold an entry-sheet in operative relation to said transferring and record sheets, and means also movably mounted on said base and adapted to engage said entrysheet holding means to prevent the removal of said entry sheet; substantially as described.

3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a base, of means adapted to releasably hold a transferring. and a record sheet in operative relation thereon, means movably mounted on said base and adapted to removably hold an entry-sheet in operative relation to said transferring and record sheets, means also movably mounted on said base and adapted to indicate the line of first entry on said entry-sheet, and means adapted to engage said entry-sheet holdingmeans ,When said indicating-means is indicating the line of first entry on said entrysheet to prevent the removal of said entry? sheet; substantially as described.

5. In a device of the kind described, the combination With a base adapted to sup ort a record-sheet, of means adapted to rel zasably hold a transferring-sheet on said base in operative relation to said record-sheet, means movably mounted on said base and adapted to removably hold an entry-sheet in operative relation to said transferring and record sheets, means also movably mounted on said base and adapted to indicate the line of first entry on said entry-sheet, and means adapted to engage said entry-sheet holding means When said indicating-means is indi eating the line of first entry on said entrysheet to prevent the removal of said entry sheet; substantially as described.

6. In a device of the kind described, the combination With a base adapted to support a record-sheet, of means adapted to releasably hold a transferring-sheet on said base in operative relation to said recordsheet, means adapted to removably hold an entry-sheet in operative relation to said transferring and record sheets and adapted to be moved over said base, an indicator adapted to indicate the line of first entry on said entry-sheet and arranged to be moved to indicate the line of last entry thereon, and means on said indicator adapted to engage said entry-sheet holding-means When said indicator is indicating the line of first entry on said entry-sheet to prevent the removal of said entry-sheet; substantially as described.

7. In a device of the kind described, the combination With a base adapted to support a record-sheet, of means adapted to releasably hold a transferring-sheet on said base in operative relation to said recordsheet, a guide-rod mounted on said base and extending lengthwise thereof, means movably mounted on said rod and adapted to removably hold an entry-sheet in operative relation to said transferring and record sheets, an indicator also movably mounted on said rod and adapted to indicate the line of first-entry on said entry-sheet, and means on said indicator adapted to engage said e-ntry-shee't-holding means When said indicator is indicating the line of first entry on said entry-sheet to prevent the removal of said entry-sheet substantially as described.

8. In a device of the kind described, the combination With a base adapted to sup ort a record-sheet, of means adapted to re eas ably hold a transferring-sheet on said base operative relation to said record-sheet, means movably mounted on said base and adapted to removably hold an entry-sheet in operative relation to said transferring and record sheets, and an indicator also movably mounted on said base and adapted to indicate the line of first-entry on said entrysheet, said indicator, when in said position, being adapted to engage with said entrysheet holding-means to prevent the removal of said entry-sheet; substantially as described.

9. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a base adapted to support a record-sheet,. of means adapted to releasably hold a transferring-sheet on said base in operative relation to said record-sheet, a guide-rod mounted on said base and extending lengthwise thereof, means shiftably mounted on said rod and adapted to removably hold an entry-sheet in operative relation to said translerring and record sheets, an indicator also shiftably mounted on said rod and adapted to indicate the line of first entry on said entrysheet, said indicator, when in such position, engaging with said entry-sheet holding-means to prevent the removal of said entry-sheet, and means adapted to hold said entry-sheet holdingmeans and said indicator in their shifted positions on said rod; substantially as described.

10. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a base adapted to support a record-sheet, of means adapted to releasably hold a transierringsheet on said base in operative relation to said record-sheet, a guide-rod mounted on said base and extending lengthwise thereof, an entry-sheet carrier shiftably mounted on said rod, a bar having a bent extension rockably mounted on said carrier, a clamping-member fixedly mounted on said bar and coi'iperating with said carrier to removably hold an entrysheet thereon, a sleeve mounted on the end of said bent extension, an indicator also shiftably mounted on said guide-rod and adapted to indicate the line of first entry on said entry-sheet, a projection on said indicator ada ted to engage with said sleeve when said in icator is indicating the line of first entry on said entry-sheet to prevent the rocking of said bar and the removal of said entry-sheet, and means adapted to hold said carrier and indicator in their several positions on said rod; substantially as described.

11. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a base adapted to support a record-sheet, of means adapted to releasably hold a transferring-sheet on said base in operative relation to said record-sheet, a guide-rod mounted on said base and extending lengthwise thereof, an entry-sheet carrier movably mounted on said rod and adapted to removably hold an entry-sheet in operative relation to said transferring and record sheets, an indicator also movably mounted on said rod and adapted to indicate the line of first entry on said entry-sheet and adapted to be moved to indicate the line of last entry thereon, and a sleeve adjustably mounted on said carrier and against which said indicator is adapted to abut when indicating the line of first entry on said entrysheet, said sleeve being adapted to limit the space between said carrier and said indicator when indicating the line of first entry on said entry-sheet; substantially as described.

12. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a base adapted to support a record-sheet, of means adapted to releasably hold a translerring-sheet on said base in operative relation to said record-sheet, a guide-rod mounted on said base and extending lengthwise thereof, an entry-sheet carrier movably mounted on said rod and adapted to removably hold an entrysheet in operative relation to said transferring and record sheets, an indicator also movably mounted on said rod and adapted to indicate the line of first entry on said entry-sheet and arranged to be moved to indicate the line of last entry thereon, releasable means adapted to releasably hold said carrier and said indicator in their several positions along said rod, and a sleeve adjustably mounted on said carrier and against which said indicator is adapted to abut when indicating the line ol first entry on said entry-sheet, said sleeve being ada )ted to be adjusted on said carrier to limit the space between said carrier and said indicator when indicating the line of first entry on said entry-sheet substantially as described.

13. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a base adapted to support a record-sheet, of elongated strips hingedly mounted on said base and adapted to releasably secure therebetween one edge of a transferrin sheet, whereby said t ransferringsheet is heId on said base in operative relation to said record-sheet, a guide-rod on said stri )8, means movably mounted on said rod and adapted to removably hold an entrysheet in operative relation to said tra1islerring and record sheets, and an indicator also movably mounted on said rod and adapted to be moved thereon to indicate the line of first entry and the line of last entry on said entry sheet; substantially as described.

14. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a base adapted to support a record-sheet, ol cooperating elongated strips hingedly mounted on said base and adapted to releasably secure therebetween one edge of a transferring-sheet, whereby said transferring-sheet is held on said base in operative relation to said record-sheet, a guide-rod mounted upon the upper of said strips, means movably mounted on said rod and adapted to removably hold an entry-- sheet in operative relation to the transferring and record sheets, an indicator also movably mounted on said rod and arranged to be moved to indicate the line of first entry and the line of last entry on said record sheet, means adapted to releasably secure said entry-sheet holding-means and said indicator in their several positions along said rod, and means adapted to releasably lock the free edges of said strips to said base-plate; substantially as described.

15. In a device of the kind described, the combination With a base adaptedto support a record-sheet, of a pair of 006 erating elongated strips hingedly mounte on said base and adapted to secure therebetween one edge of a transferring-sheet, Whereby'said transferring-sheet is held on said base in operative relation to said record-sheet, a guiderod mounted on said strips, means movably mounted on said rod and adapted to removably hold an entry-sheet in operative relation to said transferring and record sheets, said entry-sheet-holding means being adapted to be moved over said transferring and record sheets, means adapted to releasably hold s aid entry-sheet holding means in its different positions along said rod, and means adapted to releasably lock the free edges of said strips to said base-plate; substantially as described.
