CURTAIN-FIXTURE Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE J. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crockett, in the county of Houston, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Curtain-Fixtures; and I do ereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to a curtain fixture and more articularly to the class of cable tighteners for drawing taut or making loose cords or chains adapted to be actuated for raising and lowering a curtain shade.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a curtain fixture for use in the manipulation of curtain shade rollers and comprises a cord or chain tightencr carrying a pulley over which is trained a chain or cord also trained over a pulley fixed to the curtain shade roller, the said tightener comprising an adjustable member whereby the cord or chain can be drawn taut or made slack to permit the ready and easy manipulation of the curtain shade roller to raise or lower a curtain mounted thereon.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a curtain fixture comprising a cord or chain tightener for use with curtain shade rollers, the construction of which tightener is simple, it being capable of ready and quick attachment to a window frame, efficient in operation and inexpensive in the manufacture.

\Vith these and other objects in view the invention for example consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention, while the novelty of the invention will be included in the claims succeeding the description. However, it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be made such as come properly within the scope of the claims hereunto appended without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front clevation of a window frame, a curtain-shade roller mounted thereon and the invention applied to the window frame. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base plate of the curtain fixture with its other adjunct parts removed therefrom. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a shell or casing partly in section and adapted to be mounted on the base plate. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the removable end piece of the shell or casing. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the curtain fixture. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the adjustable or shift able member carrying the pulley. Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view of the curtain fixture through the adjustable or shii'table member.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.

In the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a window frame which may be of any well known construction and it being in this instance of the usual form, and mounted upon the same at opposite upper corners thereof are shade brackets or hangers 11 in which is journaled a rotatable curtain shade roller 12 having fixed at one end thereof a grooved pulley 13 the groove of which is slightly roughened to prevent the slipping of the cable or cord 14 trained there-over.

Near the lower end of one longitudinal side of the window frame 10 is mounted a cord or chain tightcner comprising a base plate 15 the latter having at opposite ends recesses 16 and it is also formed on its upper face with a series of rack teeth 17 the same extending throughout the longitudinal extent of the plate. Removably fitted upon the base plate 15 is a shell or casing 18 having spaced parallel side walls 19 formed with inwardly directed right angularly disposed guide flanges 20, the same forming thcrebetwcen a guide oiening or slot 21 and united to the side wal s 19 at one extremity of the casing is an end wall 22 the latter having a right angularly disposed securing car 23 the same having its base portion 2 rllsct and a portion thereof being corrcspondingly shaped to the recess 16 which latter accommodates a portion of the said securing car to permit the proper mounting of the casing 18 upon the base plate 1 5. 'lhe opposite end of the casing or shell 18 is litted with a removable end wall 25 the latter having a right augularly disposed securing car 26 the base 24 of which is offset corresponding to the securing car 23 and is adapted to fit in the recess 16 in the base plate 15, and which ears respectively are secured to the window frame 10 in any suitable manner.

\Vithin the casing 18 is adj ustably mounted a slide member 27 the latter having projecting from its lower face a plurality of spaced transversely disposed projections forming teeth 28 to engage the rack teeth on the base plate 15 and which slide member is formed on its upper face with a longitudinal rib 29 which projects through the slot 21, the said rib forming at opposite sides thereof channels 30 frictionally engaging the guide flanges 20 of the shell or casing. Mounted upon the rib 29 is a U-shape bracket 31 having journaled therein a grooved pulley 32 over which is trained the chain or cord 14 and which pulley is actuated by a thumb piece 33 formed on its journal whereby through the medium of the chain or cord '14 the curtain roller 12 can be rotated for raising and lowering the curtain shad-e 34 mounted thereon. Projecting from the base plate 15 are lugs .35 the latter arranged adjacent opposite sides of the rack teeth 17 so as to accommodate therebetween the side walls 19 of the shell or casing 18 so as to prevent any lateral displacement of the said side walls of the shell or casing when the latter is mounted upon the base plate.

When it is desired to move the slide member 27 to make taut or slacken the .cord .or chain 14 it is only necessary to pull outwardly upon the slide member 27 so as to disengage its teeth 28 from engagement with the rack teeth 17 011 the base plate 15 and in this manner the said slide member can be shifted longitudinally in the shell or casing 18 and upon the release of said slide member the same will lock against movement :by the engagement of its teeth with the rack teeth 17 on the base plate and thereby maintain the chain or cord in a taut or slacked conditlon.

Threaded in the brackets 11 are thumb screw members 36 which latter serve to adjust the journals of the roller 12 so that in i event the said roller rotates too freely, the thumb screw members 36 will tighten the said journals of the roller 12 with the brackets, to regulate its rotation.

What is claimed is 1. A curtain fixture of the class described comprising a base plate containing recesses in its opposite ends, a toothed rack formed on the upper face of said base plate, a removable casing having .a guide slot longituclinally therein and adapted to be mounted upon the base plate, a securing ear formed on one end of said casing and ada )ted to fit in one of the recesses in the base p ate, a removable end wall for said casing and having a securing ear adapted to fit into the other recess in the base plate, a slidable toothed member fitted within said casing and guided by the longitudinal slot therein and adapted to engage the toothed rack, a bracket carried by the said member, and a grooved pulley journaled in said bracket and over which latter is adapted to be trained a curtain shade cord.

2. The combination with a curtain shade roller, a pulley fixed thereto, and a cord trained over the latter, of a base plate having a toothed rack formed thereon, a removable shell fitted upon said lease plate and having a guide slot, a securing ear carried at one end. of said shell and adapted to inter-fit said base plate, a slidable block having teeth to engage the toothed rack of the base plate and shiftable in the shell, a pulley carried by said slidable block and. adapted to actuate said cord, and a thumb member for actuating the last mentioned pulley.
