Description

@Edited tant;

IMPROVED ATMOSPHERIC TANmNG-APPARATUS.
The sehadulereferred, to in these Lettera Patent and making paxt of the name.
To all whom it ma/y concern Be it known-that I, JOHN E. KAUFFELT, of Shrewsbury, in the county of York, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Atmospheric Tanning-Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part oi' this specification, in which- Figure l is a transverse Vertical section, and
Figure 2 is a plan view.
This invention consists in applying atmospheric air to the processes of liming, hating, and tanning hides, for the purpose of producing a mechanical action upon the compound in lthe leaches and vats.
In the drawings- A is a leach, and
B a vat, of the kind ordinarily used in tanning-the leach heilig the place Where the" ground bark is miugled with water for the purpose of extracting its tan-v nin, and the vat being'the place to which the tannin water is removed from the leach and used for soakinghides.
It has long been well known that agitation and heating of the material in the vats and leeches, expedites the several operations, and various methods have been resorted to to compass these ends, all of them differing from. mine.
To carry out my process, I make use of a fan-blower, G, driven by any suitable power from which the air is forced into a `steam-tight case, D, within which is placed a coil of pipe, d, occupying nearly the whole length of the case. The exhaust steam of the engine used in the operation of the tannery, is discharged into the case D, and this heats the air from the blower as it traverses the pipes. The latterbcing arranged in a coil, present the greatest possible amount of heating-surface.
The case is furnished with cocks to regulate the escape of steam and to discharge the water of condensation.
The heated air issues from the oase D, through the pipe e, which is divided into two branches e e, one leading to the leach and the other to the vat, each brauch having a stop-cock, so as to shut oi the air or let it ou vat pleasure. 'The branchfpipes ee",.wbich.
enter the vats and leaches, should be madeof copper, so as to'lresist the action oftannic acid.
These pipes open into the bottoms of the vats and leach'es, and a net-work of boards may be placed with. good effect across the leaches, just above the mouths ofthe pipe, so as to distribute the air throughout the bark and water.
As but a very gentle degree of heat is needed for our purpose, in summer the natural temperature of the air is generally found sufficient, rendering it unnecessary to heat it. Therefore, when I do not de sire to warm the air from t-he blower, I pass it around the case D, instead oi' through it, by means of a pipe,
h, connected at its ends with the extremities of the,
pipe d, which extend beyond the ends of the case,and are furnished with stop-cocks,- situated between the ends of the pipe h and the case D, iu order to prevent the air from entering the latter.
Having thus described my invention-'- llVhat I claim as new, aud desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rlhe described combination and arrangement of an apparatus, G, for forcing atmospheric air; the coiled, convoluted or folded pipe d, the cylinder D, enclosing the pipe d, and connected with the exhaust-pipe of a Steam-boiler; the pipes e, e', e, and the vats and leaches A, B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
' 'lo the above specification of my ivention, I have signed my hand, this 18th day of May, 1869;
JOHN E. KAUFFEL'I.
