To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS RAUHAUsER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting and Dredging Buckets, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in hoistingand dredging buckets, and it consists in the novel features and combinations of arts hereinafter described, and particular y pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a hoisting and dredging bucket of great durability and efiieienoy and one lacking in compleXity and undue weight of material.
The bucket of my invention comprises two side plates, a bail or frame connecting said plates, two ivoted oppositely disposed corresponding ucket sections and means for o ening said sections in a direction from and c osing them in a direction toward each other, said means for operating the bucket sections comprising an upper vertically movable cross-head, a lower vertically movable crosshead, links pivoted at their outer ends to the upper outer ends of the bucket sections and at their inner ends to said upper cross-head, links pivoted at their outer ends to the upper outer ends of the bucket sections and at their inner ends to said lower cross-head and sheaves and cables connected with said crossheads for actuating them and the links connected with them to operate the bucket sec tions The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section through a hoisting bucket embodying my invention, the section being on the dotted line 1--1 of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a corresponding view of the same showing the bucket-sections spread apart; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same on the dotted line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 10 designates the two side plates of the bucket structure, 1 1 an inverted U-shaped frame connecting the same, 12- the corres onding bucket sections pivoted, at 13, to sai side plates, 141 the upper vertically movable cross-head, 15 the lower vertically movable cross-head, 16 links pivoted to said upper cross-head and the u per outer ends of the bucket-sections, 17 lin is pivoted to said lower cross-head and to the upper outer ends of said bucket-sections, 18 three sheaves carried by the lower cross-head, 19 two sheaves carried by the upper cross-head, and 20 a cable which, as shown in Fig. 3, extends downwardly through the upper cross-head and around under the lower left hand sheave 1S, thence upwardly and over the upper letl' t hand sheave 19, thence dowmvardly under the middle sheave 18, thence upwardly over the upper right hand sheave 19, thence downwardly under the lower right hand sheave 18, thence upwardly to a pin 2.1. on the upper cross-hcad 141 to which the cable is firmly tied or otherwise fastened, and thence rip-- wardly to the cable operating means, not shown. One member, 22, of the cable is free to travel over the sheaves 01' both crosshoads and the other member, 23, 01' said cable is fastened to the upper cross-head, whereby what is in ell'cct a pair of triple pulley blocks is created. Both members 23 of the cable extend upwardly through a hole in the frame 11 and to means, not shown, for alternately pulling on the cablemember 23 for opening the bucket-sections and on the cable-memlmr for closing said sections. The cable operating means will, as usual, be employed i'or raising and lowering the bucket.
The bucket-sections 1.2 are exactly alike and each has sides and a douuiwardly curved bottom and is pivotally secured to the main side-plates 10 by short bolts 13 which pass through said plates and the sides of the bucket-section. The bucket-sections have a hinged movement on the bolts 13 and these bolts are at intermediate points between the upper outer and lower inner ends of the ln1c.kotsections. The brwket-sections are each equipped with an inner bottom plate 2 1, which may be removed and renewed from time to time as may be required and whose purpose is to avoid as far as possible wear of the material handled. on the main bottom of the bucket-sections. Fiach bucket-section at its lower edge is provided. with a durable bar 25 having a reasonably sharp outer edge and a reduced or shank inner portion which is inserted between the main bottom plate and inner bottom plate 24;. The bars 25 relieve the lower edges of the lnrcketsections from wear and also facilitate the movement of said edges through the material to be handled.
The vertical sides of the inverted U-shaped frame or bail 1 1 afford guides 26 for the upper cross-head 1 1 and also for the lower crosshead 15 when the latter is in its upper position, shown in Fig. 1, said lower cross-head when in its lower position passing below said. guides, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper cross head 14 is in the form of two parallel plates connected at their ends and at said ends engaging the guides 26 and having downwardly extending arms 27 to which the inner adjacent ends of the links 16 are pivotally secured by means of bolts 28. The sheaves 19 are between the plates of the cross-head 14.
The lower cross-head 15 corresponds in general construction with the upper crosshead 14 and at its ends is provided with the downwardly extending arms 29 to which the inner adjacent ends of the links 17 are pivotally secured by means of bolts 30. Since when the bucket-sections are opened the lower cross-head passes below the guides 26, the ends of said cross-head are provided with the upwardly extending guide rods 31 (Fig. 3) which pass upwardly between the sides of the upper cross-head and through holes in the top of the frame 11. The links 16, 17 are straight bars and at their outer ends are pivotally secured to the upper outer ends of the sides of the bucket-sections by means of bolts 32.
lYhen the bucket-sections 12 are in closed position the links 16, 17 at each side of the structure define a horizontal diamond-shaped outline, as shown in Fig. 1, and when the bucket-sections are in an open position said links at each side of the bucket define a ver tical diamond-shaped outline, as shown in. Fig. 2, due to the separation of the inner ends of the pairs of links in a vertical direction and the approach of the outer ends of said pairs of links in a horizontal direction.
In considering the operation of the bucket, it may be assumed that the latter is closed, as shown in Fig. 1. The bucket-sections 12 may be opened by pulling on the cable member 23, then lowered to the material to be handled and then closed to take up a load of said material by a pulling force exerted against the cable-member 22. The pull on the cable-member 23 while the cable-m ember 22 is released, is transmitted to the upper cross-head 14: and through said cross-head to the inner ends of the links 16, with the result that said cross-head and the inner ends of said links are elevated and the lower crosshead 15 and inner ends of the links 17 are lowered, whereby the outer ends of the pairs of links 16, 17 are caused to approach each other and in doing so pull inwardly against the upper outer ends of the bucket-sections to turn said sections on the bolts 13 and move the lower ends of said sections apart or to their open position. The bucket-sections will normally open until the bolts 28, 32, 13 and the lower edge of the bucket-section at each side of the vertical center of the bucket structure are in line, and this feature I deem of importance since then when the lower edges of the bucket-sections engage the material there is a line of resistance from the lower edge of each section up through the bolts 13, bolts 32, links 16 and bolts 28 against the cross-head 1 1 then against the top of the frame 11. In Fig. 2 the bucketsections are shown abnormally open so as to get them on the sheet.
hen it is desired to close the bucket-sections on the material to be elevated, the cable-member 23 is released and a pulling force exerted against the cable-member 22, with the result that the cross-heads 14, 15 are moved toward each other, pulling the inner ends of the pairs of links 16, 17 with them and forcing the outer ends of said pairs of links outwardly to turn the bucket-sections on the bolts 13 to their closed position shown in Fig. 1. During the closing of the bucket sections their lower edges travel on arcs of circles whose centers are the bolts 13 and hence they force their way downwardly into the material to be handled and take up a proper quantity thereof.
I prefer to construct the bucket-sections and main side-plates of sheet metal or rolled plate and will re-inforce the same at their edges in any appropriate manner.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A hoisting and dredging bucket comprising sides, means connecting said sides, corresponding bucket-sections pivotally secured below their upper ends to said sides, upper and lower cross-heads between said sides, guides for said cross-heads, upper links pivoted to said. upper cross-head and to the upper ends of the bucket-sections, lower links pivoted to the lower cross-head and to the upper ends of said bucket-sections, and means for causing said crossheads to separate and approach each other for actuating said links to open and close said bucket-sections, said links defining a horizontal diamond when the bucketsections are closed and a vertical diamond when said sections are open; substantially as set forth.
2.- A hoisting and dredging bucket comprising sides, means connecting said sides, corresponding bucket-sections pivotally secured below their upper ends to said sides, upper and lower cross-heads between said sides, guides for said cross-heads, upper links pivoted to said upper cross-head and to the upper ends of the bucket-sections, lower links pivoted to the lower cross-head and to the upper ends of said bucket-sections, and means for causing said cross-heads to separate and approach each other for actuating said links to open and close'said bucketsections, said links defining a horizontal diamond when the bucket sections are closed and a vertical diamond when said sections are open, the means for effecting the movement of said eross-heads con1p1'is ing a series of sheaves carried by said crossheads, a cable having a rigid connection with the upper cross-head for pulling the same upwardly to open the bucket-sections, and a cable fastened at one end to the upper cross-head and passing back and forth over the sheaves of both cross-heads and then upwardly forpulling on the lower cross-head to close the bucket sections; substantially as set forth.
3. A hoisting and dredging bucket comprising sides, means connecting said sides, corresponding bucket-sections pivotally secured below their upper ends to said sides, upper and lower cross-heads between said sides, guides for said cross-heads, upper links pivoted to said upper cross-head and to the upper ends of the bucketsections, lower links pivoted to the lower cross-head and to the upper ends of said bucket-sections, and means for causing said cross-heads to separate and approach each other for actuatingsaid links to open and close said bueketsections, said bucket-sections having inner protecting bottom plates (24) capable of renewal; substantially as set forth.
4. A hoisting and dredging bucket comprising sides, means connecting said sides, corresponding bucket-sections pivotally secured below their upper ends to said sides, upper and lower cross-heads between said sides, guides for said cross-heads, upper links pivoted to said upper crosshead and to the upper ends of the lmeket-sections, lower links pivoted to the lower cross-head and to the upper ends of said bucket-sections, and means for causing said cross-heads to separate and approach each other for actuating said links to 0 um and close said bucket-seetions, said bucket-sections having inner protecting bottom-plates (24) and edge bars (25) having outer beveled edges and secured at their shank portions between the inner and outer bottom plates of the bucket-sections; substantially as set forth.
