Be it known that l, Darin lslxoonn lint.- LETT, a citizen ol' the United at Bowling Green, in the county ol Warren and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and uset'ul .lmproveimxnts in Derailing-Switches; and l do hereby deelarc the following to be a l'ull, clear, and exact description oi' the invention, such as will en'- able others yskilled in the art to which it api pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in derailing switches, and has l'or its object to provide a construction for the purpose men'- tioned, which shall possess, at once, safety, and simplicity ot' operation.
One 0l' the objects ot my improvement is to so construct the device that the elements of the weather, snow, ine, etc., will have no damaging effect upon the parts.
Another object ol' this improvement is tht` provision oll a device ol' the character described, which presents no opening in the rail, or loose rail, sueh as characterizes the By this means', absolute safety is insured t'or a passing train, at all times.
Still another object, is to so Construct the parts that the derailing member is rendered Capablev ol' quick and easy movement.
Still a further object is the provision ot' a derailing member, in combination with a signal stand, l'or indicating the position ot the switch lor danger or safety.
Vith these several objects and advantages in View, my invention, in its prel'erred embodiment, includes the torni ol' construction hereinafter described in detail, and pointed out in the appended claims,

'l'he derailing member is designated as B?, and consists of a comparatively heavy, solid metallic body having the eonlignration otl hall ot' a pear, when divided by a rentral longitudinal cut. ,lt is provided with a llange B3, adapted to overlh` the rail B, and with lugs lr arranged to assume a position in contact with and adjacent the side of the rail B when in derailing position. The derailing member ii* connerted to the cross-bar C, and adapted to move therewith, having a sliding movement upon thel plate B5. Connected to the derailing member B2 is a rod B which is arranged to operate a signal B7 in the signal stand B, so as to indicate the position olI the switch, tor danger or safety.
.in the operation, in the position ot' the parts as shown in Fig. I, the switch is open to permit a train to pass on the siding, and the derailing member is removed from the rail so as to permit free movement of the train. Upon closing the switch, the cross bar C is operated through the angle levers .ft

Thus. ill a train already on the siding, by accident, becomes displaced and starts toward the 'main track, it will immediately be thrown t'rom the siding by means of the member B". Simultaneously with the movement olA the parts just described, the signal B7 is operated to indicate the respective position ot' the derailing member.
What l desire to secure by lietters-Patent and rlaim is:
t. ln a dorailing switch, the combination with a stationary rail, of a derailing member comprising asemi-pear-shaped metallic body, a llange thereon arranged to overlie the rail, lugs ada )ted to contact with the side of the rail, and means for moving the derailing member toward and away from said rail.
