Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26,1908.
Application filed March 3, 1908. Serial'No. 419,023
Tocll whom it may concern.
Be it known that .I, JOSEPH W; CO-LLINS, a"-
ci-tizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuya'hoga and tion ''bridge; and the objects of my im rovement.
State of Ohio, hav.e invented a new and useful Safety Device for Street-Cars at Drawbridges, of which the following is a specifi ca tion.
My invention relates to improvement in safetydevice for street cars approaching turning or swing-bridges in which a combination of guards and levers operatein' contjuncfwith the opening and closing *0 the are, first, to provide safety guar s in direct path of street cars near the draw when draw 1s open and,',second,'to protect cars not un der control when approaching the and avoid the dan er tov the use-o switch. I attain tfi anism illustrated in the accompanying draw: ing, in which the figure isv a view 1n perspective of the guards, levers, and hen ers, and sections of the track on and near t e drawbridge. I l
The railsA A show the approach and B B ,adjoining end of draw. C, D, and E, "constitute the su orts or hangers and hold the guards and l an open ofpen draw ese objects by'the mech ever in p "movable position. In the hanger D rests lever F-to-one endof. which is attached a wheel and weight to.overbalance its connections.- A-t endof draw is fastened a circular track I, so constructed that its ends will stri'ke'or pass from underneath the leverwheel, raising or lowering the lever and guards when the drawbridge 'is turned to open oriclo'serthe lever F being connected with thecross-plate made fast to guards G G. Iclaim; I,
In a device of the character described, guards, the ends of which conform to the surface of the-rails, and. adapted to project u ward into the path of the car, said guar s having a weighted lever, and wheel attached, which wheel and end of lever are also adapted to be moved upwards or downwards, in combination with a drawbridge having a circular track made fast to the end of the drawbridge to move said lever upwards or down- -wards, and to operate the guards incidentally when the drav bridge is opened or closed, substantially as herein described.
