ENDGATE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. l/VRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to end-gates for Wagons and similar vehicles, and hasparticularly to do with end gates of the same general type as that shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 651,620, dated June 12, 1900, and No. 660,479, dated October 23, 1900, both issued to me.
The invention has for its object to provide new and im roved means for securing the end gate in p ace in such manner as to permit it to be let down and extend outward from the wagon-body or to be moved outward at its lower ortion while being pivotally retained at 1ts upper portion whereby a clear space between the rear end of the floor of the Wagon-body and the end gate is provided adapted to permit the discharge of material from the wagon.
I accomplish the object stated by the means shown in the drawings and hereinafter particularly described.
That which I believe to be new will be pointed out in the claims.
,In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear end of a wagon-box with my improved end-gate ap plied thereto, said gate being in lowered position. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the gate swinging outward from the bottom. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail, being a perspective view of the hinge for the end gate. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lever employed to lock the slotted leaf of the hinge to the floor of the wagonbox. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the rear end of a Wagon-box and illustrating a modification wherein an upper supplemental gate is employed in connection with the main end gate, said main end gate being shown swung outward from the bottom. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the rear end of a wagon-box provided with a main end gate as in Fig. 4 but with such end gate in lowered position, and the up or supplemental end gate that is adapter to be used. in connection therewith, as in Fig. 4, removed. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section through the wagon-box and the main end gate, such main end gate being in Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the several figures of the drawings, in which corresponding reference characters are used to indicate like parts 10-10 indicate the side boards and 11 the floor or bottom of the wagon-box.
12 indicates a cross timber arranged under the floor or bottom 11 near the rear end thereof.
13 indicates the end gate, which extends across the rear end of the wagon-box fitting between the ends of the said side-boards 10. This end gate is secured to the wagon-box by hinges, each of which is composed of three principal parts or leaves indicated by 14, 15 and 16, as best shown in Fig. 8. The leaf 14 is of considerable length and rests u on the floor or bottom 11 of the wagon OX, to which it is adapted to be adjustably secured. As shown, this leaf is provided with a longi tudinally-extending slot 17 through which and through a hole in the floor or bottom 11 passes a bolt 18 to the screw-threaded end of which that projects through the said floor or bottom is screwed a retaining device, which, in the form of construction shown, is in the form of a short lover or handle 19. The leaf or member 16 of the hinge is to be screwed upon the outer face of the end gate 13, as clearly shown in the drawings. This leaf or member 16 has at its lower end an inturned lip 20 that fits under the edge of the end gate, the edge being notched at thatplace to re ceive this lip 20, said notch being also of a depth to receive the leaf or member 15 when the end gate is in closed position. By notching the edge of the door in this manner to receive these parts 15 and 20, the gate will fit snugly against the floor or bottom 11.
The pin 21 that unites the members 15 and 16 is made fast so that those parts cannot be disconnected, but the pin 22 that unites the parts 14 and 15 is made fast only to the part 14, so that when the end gate is freed from the locking bars hereinafter mentioned the user can, by a sidewise movement of the end gate, readily disconnect the leaves 15 of the respective hinges from the pivot pins 22 so as to remove the end gate entirely when desired.

are adapted to hook over a rod 24 extending across the wagon box near the upper edge for the purpose of acting as a pivot and retaining the upper end of the end gate 13 when the lower end is moved outward as shown in said Fig. 2. In the construction shown, this rod 24 is secured in side boards 25 that form upward extensions of the sides 10 and are held in lace by ordinary stakes 26 inserted in socxets 27 on the outside of the sides 10. Owing to the construction of the peculiar hinge employed, it will be seen that when the end gate 13 is turned up toward closing position the leaf 15 will be turned over onto the leaf 14. I do not provide these hooks 23 and the rod 24 for the purpose of securing the end gate in closed position, as such securing is ac complished by the locking bars, such as shown and described in my said Letters Patent No. 660,479, but these hooks and this cross bar are provided for the purpose of furnishing a pivotal support to the end gate when it is desired to push out the end gate, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby an opening is left through which corn, grain, fine coal, or other small stuff can readily escape, and thus avoiding the necessity of lowering the end gate, as shown in Fig. 1, and shoveling the material to be discharged over such end gate. In order to move the end gate into the position shown in Fig. 2, it is only necessary to turn the lever 19 of each hinge so as to loosen the bolt 18 and raise the locking bar 28, whereupon the end gate can be swung out to the limit of the slot 17, it being suspended in this operation from the hooks 23 that engage the cross bar 24.
28 indicates vertically-movable locking bars, one of which is arranged at each side of the wagon-box. Each of said locking-bars is provided with an upper longitudinal slot 29 and a lower longitudinal slot 30 and with a handle 31, preferably between said slots, as shown. Each locking bar 28 is fitted against a metal plate 32 screwed or otherwise fastened to one of the side boards 10.
33 indicates a rod extending across the outer face of the end gate and suitably secured thereto, as by clips 34, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or in any other suitable manner. V This rod projects through the upper slots 29 in the locking bars 28 and heads on such rod hold the parts 33 and 28 in engagement. Each 01 said locking bars is secured to the side of the wagon by headed pins 35 projecting out from the plates 32 and passing through the slots 30. By this construction, which is the construction shown in my said Patent No. 660,479, the locking bars may be moved longitudinally, the slots 2930 permitting such movement.
36 indicates hooks on the locking bars 28, said hooks being adapted to engage fixed pins 37 projecting from the plates 32 near the upper ends of such plates. The lower ends of the bars enter slots or sockets 38 when the end gate is to be locked in closed position. The fitting ol' the lower ends of these bars in said slots or sockets and the engagement of the hooks 36 with the pins 37 effectually locks the end gate in place. Each locking bar is provided with an opening 39 from its slot 30 so as to enable the locking bars 28 to be removed from engagement entirely with the pins 35, thereby permitting the end gate to be removed entirely by separating the respective hinges in the manner hereinbei'ore stated.
In Figs. 4 to 7, inclusive, I have illustrated a construction wherein, instead of employing an end gate high enough to extend from the bottom or floor 11 to the upper edge of the supplemental side boards 25, I provide two end gates, the lower one of which 1 term the main end gate and which is of a height only to extend to the upper edge of the side boards 10, while above it I employ a supplemental end gate that fits between the supplemental side boards 25, being secured in place by the rod 24. The main end gate, in this modified construction, is, in all respects except size and with the exception that it is not provided with the hooks 23 on its inner face, the same as the end gate 13 already described, and it is indicated in these said Figs. 4 to 7, inclusive, by 13*. As all the remaining parts are the same as already described, they are indicated by the same reference characters.
In the "operation of the end gate construction shown in Figs. 4 to 7, the pivotal support for the main end gate, when it is desired to swing it out at its lower edge, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, is furnished by the cross rod 33, but in this construction such cross rod re-.
mains held locked to the wagon sides, whereas in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 it has to be disconnected from the wagon sides, as shown, in order that it may swing freely on the rod 24.
In addition to the secure locking means for the end gate set forth in my said former patents, I am enabled, by reason of the novel hinge construction shown and described, to move the lower portion of the end gate outward and hold it locked in any desired posi tion thereby leaving a sufii'cient space between the end gate and the wagon-body for the discharge of material from the wagon, and when the desired material has been so discharged from the wagon the end gate can be quickly swung back into position, and when in position there locked securely by tightening up the bolts 18 by means of their respective levers or handles 19.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a box and an end gate therefor, 01 means for pivotally connecting said end gate near its upper edge with said box, and a hinge connecting said end gate at its lower edge with the bottom of said box, said hinge comprising three leaves,viz. a longitudinally slotted leaf adapted to be adjustably secured to the bottom of the box, a leaf adapted to be attached to the end gate, and an intermediate leaf to which said other leaves are connected.
2. The combination with a box and an end gate therefor, of means for pivotally connecting said end gate near its upper edge with said box, and a hinge connecting said end ate at its lower edge with the bottom of said 0x, said hinge comprising a slotted leaf adapted to be adjustably secured to the bottom of the box, a leaf adapted to be attached to the face of the end gate and having a turned portion adapted to rest against the edge of the end gate, and an intermediate leaf connected to said slotted leaf and to the said turned portion of the other leaf.
3. The combination with a box and an end gate therefor, of a rod extending across said box near the end thereof, a hook on the inner face of the end gate adapted to detachably engage said rod, and a three-leaf hinge connectin said end gate with the bottom of said box, the leaf of the hinge that lies against said bottom being adjustably secured in p ace.
4. The combination with a box and an end-gate therefor, of means for pivotally connecting said end-gate near its upper edge with said box and a three-leaf hinge connecting said end-gate with the bottom of the box, the leaf of the hinge that lies against said bottom being adjustably secured in place, and the intermediate leaf of the hinge being slidingly detachable from one of the other leaves.
