EGBERT H. GOLD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1909.
Application filed February 2, 1909. Serial No. 475,610.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ecnnnr H. GOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chica Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a' valve, and more particularly to a valve for controlling simultaneously the supply and return conduit of a fluid 'circulatory system, whereby the fluid may be either sent through a long circuit or short circuited, as may be desired.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, economical and durable valve of this character. p
' One of the principal objects of the invention, to be more particular, is to provide the valve casing of a device of this sort with an additional port, other than the long circuiting and short circuiting ports, and to construct the valve piece so that it closes this port when in its long circuiting position, and when in its short circuiting position opens and puts this port into communication with the part of the circulatory system out out.
The invention has for other objects, such new and improved constructions in valves, and particularly in short circuiting valves as will be described in the following specification and articularly set forth in the claims append dd thereto.
The valve of my invention may be used in a'heating system to control the flow of. heating medium, or in other connections.
. The invention, in a typical embodiment, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a sectional plan of the valve device taken on line l1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of the valve piece, and Fig. 4 a sectional plan on line 44 of Fig. 2.
= 15 connects with Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 10 represents the valve casing, provided with the pair of short circuitin ports 11 and 12 in one side and the pair oi long circuiting ports .13 and These ports are preferably. A supply screw-threade pipe the casing at port 11, an a return pipe 16 leads from port 12.
, in the county of Cook and State of 17 and.l8 respectively, represent the sup ly and return pipes of the part of the circu lar tony system, designed to be out outwhen occasion shall demand. For convenience, the casing is provided with two openings, corresponding, to ports 11 and12, through the side of the casing; adjacent the side having the ports 11 and 12 such openings being closed. by plugs 19 and 20 when ports 11 and. 12-. are used. The interior of the casing is constructed with the'webs 24, 25, 26 and 27,. which constitute seats for the. rotary valve piece. Through the bottomof the casing-on. the long circuiting side, that is, the side nearest ports 13 and 14, is an additional port 21-, whichwhen the valve is used with a steam heating system, serves as a drip port to drain the radiating pipes when they'are cut off from the supply and return pi as. The lower side of the casing is, prefera 1y, constructed with the integral boss 22 which surrounds port 21 and into which may be fitted. the drip pipe 23.
The valve piece, shown in detail in Fig. 3, consists of the lower disk 28,, the u per disk 29,. and the connecting web 30. isk 29 has the perforation 31 which registers with perforation,2l when the web 30 stands across the space between webs 25 and 27. The upper disk has one or more perforations 32. On the upper disk is the squared projection 33, and also the lug 34 which extends out a trifle beyond the edge of the disk. The valve piece sets into the space between WQbS' 24, 25, 26 and 27, resting on the bottom of the casing. On the upper side ofv the casing is, preferably, the integral boss 35, the interior of which is recessed for a part of its circumference as shown at 36 into which recess extends the lug34, the shoulders 37 an 38 made by this recess forming stops to limi the rotation of the valve piece to a quarter turn. Into the boss 35 is threaded a cap piece 39, the boss 35 and the cap piece constitutin a pressure chamber. 40, above the upper isk of the valve piece, which is in communication with the interior of the easing'through ports 32- Preferably, a spring- 41 is placed between the cap piece 39 and the upper disk of the valve piece. The valve piece is manipulated, by handle 42 attached 45, so that the valve piece and its stem are kept in engagement. Packing 47 for the stem 43 may be provided in a stuffing box formed by the cap nut'4.-8 which screws on to boss 44:.
I do not limit myself to the exact constructions shown and described'as modifications might be devised which would come within my invention as defined by the claims.
The operation of the valve thus constructed is as follows: Supposing for purposes of illustration that it is to be used in a heating system for the purpose of short circuiting the heating medium and cutting out a portion of the circulatory system: With the valve piece turned so that the web 30 comes into the dotted line position, (Fig. 1), the steam will enter the casing through pipe '15 and will pass out to the radiating pipes, for example, through pipe 17. The discharge of steam or water of condensation will be through pipes 18 and 16, which with this position of the valve piece are in communication with each other. The drip port 21 will be closed by -the disk 28 when the valve piece is in this position. When it is desired to short circuit the part of the system represented by pipes 17 and 18, handle 42 will be given a quarter turn, bringing the web 30 into the position shown in the full lines (Figs. 1 and 2), ports 11 and 12 will now he in communication with each other so that the heating fluid entering by pipe 15 will leave the casing through pipe 16. Ports 13 and 14 are cut off from ports 11 and 12, but are in communication with each other and are in communication with drip port 21 with which opening 31 in the lower disk 28 will register when the valve piece is in this, its short circuiting position. Therefore, the part of the circulatory system which has been cut out is free to drain out through drip pipe 23.
In order to keep the valve piece down tight against the bottom of the casing and so prevent the escape of steam through the drip port, the valve is so constructed as to introduce pressure above the upper disk of the valve piece. The s ring 41 may also be employed with this en in view or as it is of an auxiliary character, it may be omitted.
