The Schedule refer-red in these Letters Patent and making part of the sauneA Be it-known that 1,2 THOMAS SHAW, ofthe city and county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have inlowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to. the letters of reference marked thereon.
My `invention'consists in the forcing of molten metals in a spray, of fountain-like character, upward,
inthe manner and forthe purpose as hereafter Adescribed.
The-object of the invention isto shot andoxidize metals, without the use of towersfor elevated positions.
In ordertonable others to use and practise my inventionI I will proceed to describe .its construction and mode of operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, the sketch represents a longitudinal vertical section, through. the centre of I appliance, `'adapted to creating said spray or fountain,
ot' which a is -a pillar supporting a curved tube or reservoir,'h,}'.of which dis the inlet and fthe outlet.
vc is a tube for conveyingsteam or other `gaseous fluids, and is secured to tube b by soldering with -block c, all furthe purpose as hereafter described.
The object of curved'tubeb is m guide the molten -metal (poured in at d) on a line immediately in front of a powerful blast of steam or air blowing upon it from pipe c, -the effect of which is to blow the molten land Oxidizirig Metals; and I do' hereby declare the folvmetal in a spray violently-from the mouth fatter which it is allowed to fall in water in the usual mannel'.
Both the inlet-mourir d andwoutlet-mouth f eau be vmore or less closed, or the mout-h f variously shaped, according to kindof metal operating on any kind of spray desired. The apparatus is put in operation; in this wise:
A current of air or 4steam is blown into `tube b" from pipe c, when molten metal is poured'intube b,
in front of said blast of steam or air, the f orce of which throws it violently ont of mouth of said tube b in a.
spray, which is 'allowed to'fall in water. The. metals willr he. variously oxidized, in proportion to distance thrown from mouth f.
It will be evident that *the mouth of tV beb can be v variously shaped and closed, and that sai tube orrescrvoir can be constructed of ,various materials, and
modified in shape without any material alteration in- I do not, therefore, wish to confine myself to exact shape of apparatus; but' Y lVhat I do claim, and desire to .secure by Letters Patent isk The blowing of molten metals iu a fountain into the air, whereby they are shotted, in the manner and for the purpose substantially asset forth.
' THOMASV SHAW. [L. 8.]
