To all whom it "may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST B. SELLEW, of Pawtucket, county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llletal-VVorking Machines; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact V character that the speed of the feeding movements of the turret-slide should vary with variations in the speed of the spindle it is not desirable that the speed of the return movements of the turret-slide should be so varied or changed, but on the contrary it is important that thespeed of such return movements should remain uniform and constant.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide means independent of the work-spindle for operating the turret in its return movements, whereby the s eed of such return movements shall be who ly independent of and unaffected by any change in the speed of the spindle, and may thus remain uniform and constant.
As it is desirable that the feed movements of the turret-slide should vary with variations in the speed of the workspindle, a fur, ther object of the invention is to provide means whereby the feed movements of the turret-slide shall be effected in connection with the rotation of the work-spindle, and whereby changes in the speed of the spindle will be accompanied by corresponding changes in the feed of the turret-slide, while at the same time the return movements of the turret-slide shall be eifected independent of the spindle and shall be unaffected by any changes in the speed thereof.
To these ends the invention consists primarily in the combination, with the work-- spindle and the turret-slide, of asingle driving member, preferably of a constant speed, a connection from said driving member to Specification of Letters Patent.

So far as the features of invention above referred to are concerned, it is immaterial whether the feeding movements of the turret-slide are derived from and through the Work-spindle as heretofore, or in some other manner, it being important only that the return movements of the turret-slide shall be derived from the driving member independent of the spindle. It is preferred, however, instead of deriving the feeding movements of the turret-slide from and through the spindle, to derive such feeding movements of the turret-slide from a branch connection leading from the connection between the driving member and the workspindle, as thereby, in addition to means for simultaneously changing the speed of the spindle and the feeding movements of the turret-slide, further means may, if desired, be provided for changing the speed of the spindle or stopping the same, without correspondingly changing the feeding movements of or stopping the feed of the turretslide.
A further feature of invention therefore consists in the combination, with the workspindle and the turret-slide, of a single driving member, preferably of a constant speed, a connection from said driving member to said work spindle, and abranch connection therefrom to said turret-slide for imparting feeding movements thereto.
The invention further consists in the combination, with the work-spindle and turretslide, of a single driving member, preferably of a constant speed, a connection from said driving member to said workspindle, a branch connection therefrom leading to said turret-slide, and speed changing means lo.- cated in advance of said branch connection,

Whi e it desirable inmachines of this character; a ,whenever the speed of the spindle is chan edfi the speed of the feeding movements of, the" turret-slide should be correspondingly-changed, it is also desirable that provision should be made for changing the speed of' the feeding movements of the turret-slide for the operation of different tools without changing the speed of the spindle.
A further feature of invention therefore consists in the combination, with the work-' spindle and the turret-slide, of a single driv ing member for both said work-spindle and turret-slide, and means for changing the speed of the feeding movements of said turret-slide independent of said spindle.
The invention further consists in certain constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a turret-lathe embodying' the main features of invention, and Fig.
'2 is a corresponding sectional elevation of a modified construction which embodies both the main feature and also the several additional features.
Referring to the construction shown in Fig. 1, 1 re resents a suitable frame in which the severa parts are mounted. The workspindle 2 is mounted in bearings 3 and rovided with the usual chuck 4. SGCUI'QL to the work-spindle are two gears 5 and 6 of different diameters. The shaft 7 mounted in bearings 8 is the primary drive shaft of the machine, being provided with a driving pulley 9 at its outer end. Loosely mounted on said shaft 7 are two gears 10 and 11 of different diameters and which mesh respectively with the gears 5 and 6 on the workspindle. Each of said gears 10 and 11 is turret-slide 20. For impartin provided with aclutch-face, and splined to the shaft 7 between said gears is a double acting sliding clutch-member 12 adapted to engage the clutch.faces on said gears and connect one or the other of said gears to the shaft 7..
When the clutch-member 12 is in engagement with the clutch-face of the gear 10 the work-spindle will be rotated by the ears 10 and 5 at one speed, and when sai clutch member is in en agement with the clutch of the gear 11, sai spindle will be rotated by the gears 11 and 6 at a different s eed.
Mounted in bearings 13 is as aft 14 for operating the cam-drum which serves to advance and retract the turret-slide. This cam-drum shaft 14 is adapted to be connected by means of the clutch 15 either with the ear-11 or with the primary drive-shaft 7. aid shaft 14 is provided with a pinion 16 which meshes with a gear 17 connected to the cam-drum 18. The cam-drum is provided with cams 19 as usual for'advancing and retracting the turret-slide 20 carrying the tool-turret 21.
The clutch 15 is a differential clutch embodying two ears 22 and 23 each adapted to be operated y the gear. 11, but at different spee s, Splined to the shaft 14 is a slidin clutch-member 24. When said sliding clutcl member 24 is in engagement with the gear 22, 4

The shaft 14 is operated from the gear 11, either through the gear 22 or through the gear 23, only for operating the cam-drum 18 to impart the feeding movements to the the return movements to said turret-slide t e cam-drum shaft 14 is connected by means of the sliding clutch-member 24 directly with the rimary drive-shaft 7. For this purpose said is provided with a clutch member 25 adapted to be engaged by the sliding clutch member 24.
As will be seen, when the clutch member 12 is in engagement with the gear 10, the workspindle will be rotated by the gears 10 and 5,
and the gear 11 will be driven by the gear 6.
With the clutch member 24 in engagement either with the gear 22 or the gear 23, the cam-drum shaft 14 will then be operated by said gear 11, said shaft being thus operated for the feeding movements of the turretslide. If now the clutch member 12 be shifted into engagement with the gear 11, the work-spindle will be operated by the gears 11 and 6, thereby changing the speed of said spindle, while at the same time the speed of the gear 11 itself will likewise be changed and so as to correspondingly change the s eed of the cam-drum shaft 14 and the spee of the feeding movements of the turret-slide.
For the return movements of the turretslide the clutch member 24 is to be shifted into engagement with the clutch member 25 secured to the shaft 7, and so that the camdrum shaft 14 will then be driven directly by said shaft 7. As will be understood, the clutch member 24 is to be shifted for each feeding and return movement of the turretslide. It is preferred to so construct or arrange the cams 19 on the cam-drum 18 that the turret-slide will not only be returned or retracted, but will also be advanced to bring the tools up to the work,while the cam-drum shaft 14 is driven directly by the shaft 7, and so that this part of the advancing movement of the turret-slide will be at the same fast speed as the return movement, leaving only t e feeding movement of the turret-slide during the actual operation of the tool to be effected through the gear 11.
Means are provided for automatically shifting the clutch members12 and 24. Engaging the clutch member 12 is a lever 26 pivoted at 27. Projecting from the lower end of the lever 26 is a in 28 which enters a slot 29 formed in a weig ted lever 30 pivoted at 31. Connected to the lower end of the lever 30 is a sliding rod 32, the upturned end of which is adapted to be engaged by cams 33 on the cam-drum 18. This construction constitutes a simple and efficient mechanism for quickly shifting the clutch-member 12. By the action of one of the cams 33 the weighted lever 30 is moved from the position shown in the drawing so as to carry the weighted end of said lever past the vertical, when the sudden falling of said weighted end will serve to impart a correspondingly rapid movement to the clutch member 12. The mechanism for automatically shifting the clutch member 24 is of the same construction. Engaging said clutch member is a lever 34 pivoted at 35 and carrying at its lower end a projecting pin 36, which enters a slot 37 formed in the 'weighted lever 38 pivoted at 39. Connected to the lower end of the lever 34 is a sliding rod 40, the upturned end of which is adapted to be engaged by cams 41 on the cam-drum 18. The operation of this mechanism in shifting the clutchmember 24 is the same as already described in connection with the mechanism for shifting the clutch member 12, except that as the clutch member 24 may be required to occupy any one of three different positions, additional means are provided for holding said clutch in its intermediate position, that is, in engagement with the gear 22. Said means consists of a weighted lever 42 pivoted to the frame at 43, said lever being provided with a beveled face projection 44 adapted to engage a corresponding projection 45 on the sliding rod 40. As will be understood, when the clutch-member 24 is to be moved into engagement with the gear 22, the cams 41 are so shaped and arranged that the movement of the weighted lever 38 will be arrested by one of said cams in proper position for the clutchmember 24 to engage said gear 22, and when this cam, by the revolution of the cam-drum, has moved out of the path of the upturned end of the sliding-rod 40, the clutch member 24 will be held in such position by the weighted lever 42 through the engagement of the projection 44 with the projection 45.
Referring now to the construction shown in Fig. 2, the primary drive-shaft 7 is in the form of a sleeve surrounding the work-spindle 2, to which sleeve the driving pulley 9 is secured. The work-spindle 2 is mounted in8o bearings 3 and is provided with the usual chuck 4. The cam-drum 18 for advancing and retracting the turret-slide 20 carrying the tool-turret 21, together with the shaft 14, the differential speed clutch 15, the pinion 16, and the gear 17, are the same as in the construction shown in Fig. 1. So also the mechanism for automatically shifting the clutch members 12 and 24 is likewise the same as shown in Figc1,the' parts being similarly numbered and the description of the same need not therefore be repeated.-
The important difference between the construction shown in Fig. 2 and the construction shown in Fig. 1 relates to the means for imparting the feeding movements to the turret-slide.
Secured to or formed integral with the sleeve or primary drive shaft 7 is a pinion 46 which meshes with a gear 47 secured to a shaft 48 mounted in suitable bearings. On the outer end of the shaft 48 is a gear 49 which meshes with a gear 50 keyed to a sleeve 51 loosely mounted on a shaft 52. Loosely mounted on said shaft 52 is another gear 53 which meshes with the gear 47 on the shaft 48. The sleeve 51, which constitutes in effect a hub of the gear 50, and the gear 53 are each provided with a clutch-face, and splined on the shaft 52 between said clutchfaces is the sliding clutch member 12.
Keyed to the shaft 52 is a gear 54 which meshes with a gear 55 on a shaft 56 mounted in suitable bearings. Said shaft 56 is provided at its other end with a gear 57 which meshes with a peripheral gear 58 secured to or formed integral with the chuck 4. \Vith this construction, as will be seen, when the clutch member 12 is in engagement with the clutch-face of the sleeve 51, the chuck 4 and work-spindle 2 will be operatedfrom the primary drive-shaft 7 through the pinion 46, gears 47, 49 and 50, shaft 52, 54, 55, 57 and 58, the rotation of said chuck and spindle being at a speed determined by the proportions of the gears composing the operating train.
When now the clutch member 12 is shifted into enga enient with the clutch-face of the gear 53, t e chuck and spindle will be operated from the-primary drive-shaft 7 through the pinion 46, gears 47, 53, 54, 55, 57 and 58, the rotation of said chuck and spindle when so rotated being at a different speed by reason of the different proportions of the" 14 for operating the cam-drum to impart feeding movements to the turret-slide. As
will be seen, the. speed of the feedin movements of the turret will be changed w enever thespeed of said operating gear 54 is changed, and that consequently whenever a the c utch 12 is shifted to change the speed of the chuck and spindle, the speed of the feeding movements of the turret-slidewill be correspondingly changed.
As in the construction shown in Fig. 1 the s eed of the feeding movements of the turret slide may also be inde endently varied by theshifting of the clutc member 24 into engagement with either the gear 22 or the gear 23 of the differential speed-clutch 15. If desired, the ears 49 and 50 may be change gears, as s own in the drawings, and by changing such gears additional changes may be made in the speed of the chuck and spindle and of the feeding movements of the turiret-slide.
In the construction shown in Fig. 2 means are likewise provided for imparting the return movements to the turret-slide independent of the chuck and spindle. The
means for thus imparting the return movements to the turret-slide independent ofthe chuck and spindle are as f0 ows: Secured to the inner end of the shaft 48 is a gear 59 which meshes with a gear 60 formed on a sleeve 61 loosely mounted on the shaft 56. Secured to or formed with said sleeve 61 at its opposite end is a. gear 62 which meshes with anidle gear 63 mounted on the stud 64. Said gear 63 meshes with a gear 65 loosely mounted on the cam-drum shaft 14, said gear and its hub constituting one of theearings for said shaft. The gear 65 is (provided with a clutch-face 66, and the sli ing clutch member 24 is provided with a clutchface; 67. With this construction, as will be primary drive-sha t 7, through the pinion 46, v
65 gear 47, shaft 48, gears 59, 60, 62, 63, and 65.
As'will be seen, the'cam-drum shaft when so operated will be operated from the primar drive-shaft entirely independent of the 011110 and spindle, and it will be understood that said cam-drum shaft 14 is tobe so operated for imparting the return movements to the turret-slide at a fast but uniform speed. As in the case of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, this fast and. uniform speed derived d1- reotly from the primary drive-shaft and independent of the chuck and spindle may be employed not only to return or retract the turret-slide, but also to advance said slide to b'rin the tool up to the work, leavin onl the feeding movement of the tool to e e fected through the gear 54 and the differential speed-clutch 15.
It will be seen that the construction shown in Fig. 2 differs from the construction shown in Fig. 1 in the respect that the feeding movements of the turret-slide are not derived from or through the work-spindle, but that instead even such feeding movements of the turret-slide are independent of the s indle, in that they are derived from a branc connection leading from the connection between the primary drive-shaft and the spindle. It will be seen that wit both of thefconstructions shown and described the connection from the driving member .to the turretslide for imparting the return movements to said slide is independent of the connection from said driving member to the work-spindle, and so that said returnmovements will not be in any way affected by variations in the speed of the spindle, but will instead remain constant and uniform so long as the speed of the driving member remains constant. that while it is preferred to make use of a constant speed driving member, and so that the returnmovements of the turret-slide will be always at the same speed, the underlying feature of the invention is not limited to the employment of a driving member which has a constant s eed, such underlying feature consisting in aving the return movements of the turret-slide effected from the same driving member as the rotation of the work- 'spindle, but independent of said spindle, instead of through the same, as heretofore, and sothat variations which may be made in the In this connection it is to be noted speed of said spindle by the employment of speed changing means in the connection between the driving member and said spindle will not affect the return movements of the turret-slide.
It will be further seen that with both constructions the feeding movements of the turret-slide are in unison with or in harmony With the speed of the Work-spindle, and that the means for changing the speed of the spindle are so located and arranged that whenever the speed of the spindle is changed the feeding movements of the turret-slide will be correspondingly changed.
It Will be further seen that in the construction shown in Fig. 2 the feeding movements of the turret-slide are derived, not through the spindle, but by a branch connection as above described, and so that if desired provision might be made for changing the speed of the spindle or stopping the same Without changing the speed of the feeding movements or stopping the turret-slide.
It will be further seen that in both constructions means are provided whereby either the turret-slide or the Work-spindle may be stopped independent of the other or may both be stopped as desired. Thus by moving the clutch-member 24 into neutral position the operative connection to the camdrum will be broken and the turret-slide thereby stopped. So also by moving the clutch 12 into mid-position the operative connection to the Work-spindle will be broken and the spindle thereby stopped. As each of said clutches may be moved independent of the other or may be moved together, either the turret-slide or the Work-spindle may be stopped Without stopping the other, or both may be stopped together. It will be understood that by the proper arrangement of suitable cams on the cam-drum for operating the devices for shifting the clutches 12 and 24 respectively, said clutches may not only be automatically shifted to change the operative connections, but may also be automatically shifted to bring both of said clutches, or either of them, into neutral position.
It will be further seen that by the employment of the differential speed-clutch 15 in the connection for imparting the feeding movements to the turret-slide, and by roviding means for automatically shifting the clutchmembcr 24 into engagement with either the gear 22 or the gear 23, the speed of the feeding movements of the turret-slide may be automatically changed independent of-the spindle.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination, with the work spindie and the turret-slide, of a driving member, a connection from said driving member to both said Work-spindle and said turret-slide for imparting feeding movements to said turret-slide, and an independent connection from said driving member to said turretslide for imparting return movements thereto.
2. The combination, With the'Work-s indle and the turret-slide, of a driving mem er, a connection from said driving member to both said work-spindle and said turret-slide for imparting feeding movements to said turret-slide, speed-changing means in said connection for changing both the speed of said Work-spindle and the speed of the feeding movements of said turret-slide, and an independent connection from said driving member to said turret-slide for imparting return movements thereto.
3. The combination, with the Works indle and the turret-slide, of a driving member, a connection from said driving member to said work-spindle, a branch connection therefrom leading to said turret-slide, and speed changing means located in advance of said branch connection.
4. The combination, with the Work-spindle and the turret-slide, of a driving member, a connection from said driving member to said work-spindle, a branch connection therefrom to said turret-slide for imparting feeding movements thereto, and an independent connection from said driving member to said turret-slide for imparting return movements thereto.
5. The combination, with the work-spindle and the turret-slide, of a constant s eed driving member, a connection from said riving member to said Work-spindle, a branch connection therefrom to said turret-slide for imparting feeding movements thereto, speed changing means located in advance of said branch connection, and an independent connection from said driving member to said turret-slide for imparting return movements thereto at a constant speed.
6. The combination, with the Work-spindle and the turret-slide, of a driving member, a connection from said driving member to said Work-spindle and said turret-slide for imparting feeding movements thereto, means for changing both the speed of said spindle and the speed of the feeding movements of said slide, and meansfor changing the speed of the feeding movements of said slideindependent of said spindle.
7. The combination, with the work-s indle and the turret-slide, of a driving mem er, a cam-drum, a connection from said driving member to said Work-spindle and said camdrum for rotating said cam-drum to im art feeding movements to said turret-s ide, means for changing both the speed of said spindle and the feeding speed of said camdrum, and means for changing the feeding speed of said cam-drum independent of the speed of said s indle.

9. The combination, with the work-s indle and the turret-slide, of a driving mem er, a cam-drum, a connection from said driving member to said work-spindle and said cam- 10 drum for rotating said cam-drum to impart feeding movements to said turret-slide, and an independent connection from said driving member for rotating said cam-drum to impart return movements to said turret-slide.
10. The combination, with the work-spindie and the turret-slide, of a cam-drum for operating said turret-slide, means for operating said Work-s indle and said cam-drum in ERNEST B. SELLEW.
