METAL-woamne MAcHmEfif,
T all whom'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST B. SELLEW, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence an State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MetallVorking Machines; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
One feature of the present invention consists in providing means whereby in a machine, in which the feeding movements of the turret-slide are derived from operating mechanism, two different speeds may be given to the spindle'in one direction and the spindle be rotated in the reverse rection, the change of speed of the spindle and the reversal of the spindle being automatically effected and the spindle being at all times operated, and consequently feeding movements of the turret-slide derived, from a single constant speed driving member.
A further feature of invention consists in providing means whereby, when the direction of the spindle is reversed, the direction of rotation of the cam'-drum which actuates the, turret-slide, although driven from the spindle, will instead be always in the same direction.
A further feature of invention consists in providing means whereby and the cross-slide may be simultaneously adjusted, and so that the proper relation be-" tween these parts in any adjusted position will always be maintained.
A further feature of invention consists in providing means whereby the adjustment of the turret-slide, the adjustment of the crossslide and the adjustment of the cross-slide mechanism, which latteradjustment is incidental to the adjustment of the cross-slide, may all be simultaneously effected by a single operation.
A further featureof invention consists in whereby when the turretproviding means slide is adjusted the devices for indexing the turret will be correspondingly and simultaneouslyadjusted, and so that said indexing devices will be in the proper position'to index the turret at the end of the retracting movement of the turret, whatever the adj'ustment of the turret-slide may be.
Afurther feature of invention consists in providing means whereby the cross-slide Specification of Letters Patent. I
'vanced and retracted the spindle scale of the spindle end the not be reversed, but will the turret-slide Patented Oct. 19,1920.

may be operated from the cam-drum by devices reciprocating. 1n a direction lengthwise of the machine.
A further feature of invention consists in providing means whereby a facing tool arranged axially of the spindle will be adunder the control of the advancing and retracting movements of the turret-slide.
The invention further consists in combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. I

The pinion 18 meshes with a gear 19, the elongated hub 20 of which is suitably mounted in the frame.
Mounted in suitable bearings in the frame and. in the hub 20 respectively is a short shaft 21. The shaft 21 -is adapted to be connected with the gear 19 by means of the double sliding clutch 22.-to be hereafter referred to, and is so connected when the spindle islo be rotated in the forward direction. Secured to the outer end of the shaft 21 are two change gears 23 and .24 of different diameters.

The construction of this reversible roller ratchet connection which, in connection with the reversal of the spindle, constitutes a feature of the present invention, will be more fully described in connection with the description of the mecha nism for reversing the spindle. the rotation of the spindle at two different speeds in the forward direction is concerned, the operation of the mechanism above'described is as follows;
lVhenthe clutch 30 the gear 29 with the shaft 26 motion will be nnpartedto the spindle 14 from the pulley 16 through gears 18, 19, shaft 21, gears 23, 25, shaft 26,gears 29, 31, shaft 32, and gears 33, 34. With the arrangement. of gears shown this train of 'gearingwill serve the high speed by said gear 31 the speed of the shaft will be such that, although the gear 36 is at the same time being rotated, said gear 36 will, by reason of its slower speed and by reason of the roller ratchet connection above referred to, have no effect upon the shaft 32 which will be at this time rotated at a higher speed than said gear 36.-

Referring now to the mechanism for imparting feeding and return movements to the turret-slide, and first to the mechanism for imparting feeding movements thereto at different speeds, the rear end of the shaft 32 is provid d .with apinion 46 which mesheswith a gear 47 secured to or formed integral with a sleeve 48 loosely mounted on the shaft 28. Secured to or formed integral with said sleeve is another gear 49 which meshes with a gear 50 loosely mounted on the shaft 41 hereinbefore referred to, said gear 50 being adapted to be connected to and disconnected from said shaft 41 by the double clutch member 51mounted on said shaft.
Secured to the outer end of the shaft 41 are two change gears 52 and 53. The gear 52 meshes with a gear 54 secured to a shaft 55, while the gear 53 meshes with a gear 56 secured to a shaft 57. Mounted on the inner end of the shaft 55 is a differential speed reducing gear box, designated as awhole at 58, of a well-known construction and which need not be described indetail. Loosely mounted on the to said gear box and'operated therefrom is a gear 59. Mounted on the shaft 57 is a corbox 60 and a gear 61 operso that thereby the shaft 55 adjacent each of the gear boxes 58 provided for by reason for employing these and 60, andthe two gear boxes 57 is to increase the number of speeds, four different speeds being provided for by the employment of the two gear boxes.
Means are provided which will be herein after described for automatically effecting the desired changes in the two reducing speed gear boxes referred to.
Inasmuch as by the shifting of the clutch with the two shafts'55 and 22 the direction of rotation of the shaft 32.
may be reversed for the purpose of reversing the spindle, it follows that, if the train of mechanism above described leading from the spindle operating train to impart feeding movements to the turret-slide were the only train provided for that purpose, the direction ofrotation of the cam-drum shaft 63 would be reversed whenever the direction of rotation of the shaft 32 was reversed. It is not desired, however, that thedirection of the cam-drum shaft and the cam-drum operated thereby; shall be thus reversed, but instead it is desired that the cam-drum shall always rotate in the same direction. Consequently an additional train of mechanism with a shifting clutch is provided leading 7 from the-shaft 32 to thecam-drum shaft 63, whereby bythe shifting of said clutch, when the direction of rotation of the shaft 32 is reversed, the shaft 63 will be. operated by this second train of mechanism in the same direction as before. Loosely mounted on the shaft 41 is a gear 64 which also meshes with the pinion 46 on the shaft '32. This gear 64 is adapted to be connected withand disconnected from the shaft 41 by the double clutch member 51 before referred to. As will be seen, the gear 64 which. as above stated, meshes directly with the pinion 46, will thus berotated in an opposite direction from the gear 50, which is rotated through the intermediate gears 47 and 49.
Means are provided for simultaneously shifting the two clutch members 22- and 51,, Y
such means comprising a lever 65 secured to a rock-shaft 66. It is preferred to make this lever 65 in the form of a double lever, as shown in Fig. 4, and so that each of the clutches will be thereby engaged on opposite sides. Means are provided for auto matically rocking the shaft 66 and thus automatically shifting the clutches 22 and 51, which means will be hereafter described. It may, however, be here noted that with the construction above described, whenever the clutch 22 is shifted to reverse the .spindle, thereby reversing the shaft 32. the
clutch 51 will be simultaneously shifted, and

any corresponding reversal of the cam-drum shaft 63, ut instead said cam-drum shaft will continue to be rotated in the same direction as before,
Referring now to the mechanism for imparting return movements to the turretslide, it is'to be understood that the return movements of said slide are to be at a constant speed andat a much greater speed than the feeding movements thereof, and the mechanism to be described serves to impart return movements to the slide at such constant and higher speed.
As shown in Fig. 5, the hub 20 of the gear 19 is provided at itsforward end with a gear or pinion 67 which meshes with a gear 68 loosely mounted on the shaft 32.
shaft 32 adjacent to the gear clutch member 68 is a companion clutch member 69 which is likewise provided with gear teeth which mesh with the gear 62 secured to the camdrum shaft 63. uring the feeding movement ofthe turret-slide the clutch members 68 and 69 are out of engagement with each other and each of said clutch members simply rotates loosely on the shaft 32. V hen, however, the return movement-is to be imparted to the turret-slide, the clutch member 69 is automatically forced into engagement with the clutch member 68, and when this is done the gear 62, and consequently the cam-drum shaft 68, is rotated directly from the gear 67 through the friction clutch It will be understood that as the speed of rotation thereby imparted to the cam-drum shaft 63 is much greater than the speed of either of the shafts or 57, the pawls in the reducing gear-box referred to will ride over the teeth of the gears in said box and so that the return movement may be imparted to the turret-slide through the friction clutch members 68, 69, without in any way interfering with the train of mechanism for imparting feeding movements to said slide. e means for automatically controlling the engagement and disengagement of the clutch members 68 and 69 will be hereafter described.
The turret end of the machine with the mechanism foractuating the turret-slide and the mechanism for actuating the cross slide will next be described. The outer end provided with of the cam-drum shaft 63 is a pinion 7O engaging an internal gear 71 The turretslide and return be adjusted longitudinally thereon is the base 79 rovided with suitable ways for the cross-slide 80. In the present machine the cross-slide is operated from the-.same camdrum 72 which means of a connecting 'device to which movements lengthwise of the machine are imparted by said cam-drum. Mounted to slide in suitable ways formed on the frame of the machine is a sliding bar 81 located beneath the turret-slide. this sliding 82 adapted to be engaged by cams 83 on the cam-drum 72, by means of which cams reciprocating movements are imparted to said sliding bar.
The cross-slide 80 is provided on its underside with two angular slots 84, 85, extending transversely of the slide, which slots as shown in Fig. 22 come together at a common meeting point. The angular slots 84, 85, are adapted to be traversed, either the one or the other, by a roll 86, the movement of said roll in the slot 84 serving a central position, and the movement of said At its outer end bar 81 is provided with a roll operates the turret-slide by to move the cross-slide in one direction from roll in the slot 85 serving to move the crossslide in the opposite direction from such central position. So far as the main feature of the invention with respect to means for actuating the cross-slide is .concerned, the roll 86 might be mounted directly on and carried by the sliding bar 81. For the purpose of adjustment, however, as will be hereinafter more fullyexplained, said roll 86, instead of being mounted directly on the sliding bar 81, is mounted on a separate supplemental bar 87 which is adjustably connected to the bar 81. As shown in Fig. 12, the bar 81 is provided with an internal screw-thread forming an elongated semicircular nut. Rotatably connected with the supplemental bar 87 is a screw 88 arranged to engage the semi-circular nut formed on the interior of the bar 81.
It will be understood that the cross-slide is adapted and intended to be provided with a tool at each end thereof, one of said tools, as for instance a tool for taking a roughing out, being located on one side of the work held in the chuck, and the other tool, as for instance a tool for taking a finishing out, being located on the-other side of the work, and the two angular slots 84, 85, are provided to actuate the cross-slide to bring first one and then the other of these tools into operative engagement with the work. I f the cross-slide were provided with only one tool located on one side of the work, only one angular slot would be required, andin such case the cross-slide would be moved first in shown in the drawings,
one direction and then in the other to advance and retract this tool by the travel of the roll 86 in such angular slot, first in one direction and then in the other.
When the cross-slide is provided with two tools and two angular slots are provided for advancing and retracting first one tool and then the other it is necessary to provide some means for directing the roll 86 firstinto one of the two slots and then into the other. As a pivoted switch 89 is employed for this purpose, and means are provided for automatically operating this switch to direct the roll 86 first into the slot 84 and then into the slot 85. The switch 89 is pivoted at 90 and when said switch occupies the position shown in Fig. 22 the roll 86 will be directed into the slot 84, and when said switch is moved to its oppositeposition said roll will be directed into the slot 85.
The switch 89 is provided with a springwire 91 which lies in a plane above the switch 89, one end of which wire is held in a slot formed in the hub 90 of the switch.
The other endof said wire projects beyond the end of the switch and extends into a slot 92 formed in the cross-slide base 79, as shown in Figs. 22 and 24. The ends of this slot are beveled and on the cross-slide there is a plate 93 which at certain times will be caused to overlie the .end of the spring-i wire 91.
The operation of the mechanism for automatically operating the switch 89 is as follows: Assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Figs. 22 and 2 k, as the roll 86 travels along the slot.84: the crossslide will be moved to the right. In being thus moved to the right the plate 93 and the free end of the spring-wire 91 will be moved with the cross-slide until: said wire is brought into contact with'the beveled end 94 of the slot92, when said wire will be moved downward to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 24:. At this time the movement of the cross-slide has not been en'- tirely completed, but instead ing substantially to the width of the plate 98, and so as to move said plate into the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 24:, thereby carrying said plate from one side of the wire to the other.- As soon as the plate in moving farther to the right has passed by the wire, the wire which has been putunder spring tension by its downward movement will springv up to the upper part of the slot and then on the return movement of the cross-slide the plate and wire will move together. shifting of the wire 91 from one side'ofthe plate 93 to the other will eifect a corresponding movement of the switch 89'by reason of the connection of the spring wire therewith,
and will thus move said switch to a position roll passing beneath the wire 91.
a further movement is imparted thereto correspond As will be understood, the
to close the slot 84 and open the slot 85. As
this movement of the switch takes place while the roll 86 is'still in the slot 84, it is necessary that the roll shall be permitted to pass out of said slot. This is accomplished by locating the wire above the: switch 89 and thus above the top of the roll 86, and so that the roll may move the switch so as to enable it to pass out of the slot 84:, said As soon, however, as the roll has passed out of said slot the switch willimmediately, by the action of the spring wire, be thrown back to a position where it closes saidslot 84: and opens the slot 85, and so that when the sliding bar 87 is next advanced the roll 86 will enter the slot 85 and thus move the crossslide to the left or in a direction to advance the other tool thereon into operative engagement-v with the work.
As will be seen, the movement of the crossslide, whether it be provided with only one tool and one angular slot for actuating said slide or whether provided with two tools and two angular slots, will be actuated by a part or device which reciprocates lengthwise of the machine under the direct action of the cam-drum. It will also be seen that with the construction shown in which the roll 86 is caused at each reciprocation to traverse the entire width of the cross-slide a comparaseveral lengths of the stroke being automatically effected by the proper cams onthe cam-drum. In suchcases, however, the
end of the retracting stroke or beginning of. the forward stroke of the turret is always at from the spindlethe same point for each reciprocation of the turret-slide.
In addition to this automatic variation of the length of stroke of the turret-slide it is desirable to provide means for adjusting said turret-slide with relation to its operating cams, or in other words, to adjust or change the point at whichthe forward stroke commences and consequently the points at which the several forward strokes terminate, such adjustment being to accommodate pieces of work which project at varying distances from the spindle-chuck.
WVhere means are thus provided for adjusting the turret-slide with relation to its operating cams, it is also desirable to adjust the position of the cross-slide, and so that the proper relation between the cross-slide and the turret-slide may be maintained and to bring the cross-slide to a position where it will movement of the turret-slide adjusted position. sometimes is desirable to adjust the position of the cross-slide by reason of the diameter in its newly cross-slide will ordinarily, when the work is of sufficiently small diameter, occupfi a position beneath theproje'cting work. ut when the work is of that the cross-slidecannot occupy this position, it becomes necessary to adjust the cross-slide so that it will be at a point beyond the end of the projecting work. When the cross-slide is so adjusted it is desirable that the turretslide; shall also be correspondingly adjusted in order to make certain that the cross-slide will not interfere with the advancing movement of the turret on its longest stroke.
In the present machine means are provided whereby the turret-slide and the crossslide may both be simultaneously adjusted and by one operation, and this means will next be described.
Referring to Fig. 12, the block 76 which carries the roll 77 is adjustably secured to the turret-slide. The turret-slide is provided with an elongated slot 95. through which extends a stud 96 projecting from said block 76. The upper end of the stud 96 is screw-threaded to receive a clamp nut 97 by means of which the block 76 is clamped to the turret-slide in any of its dif-v ferent adjusted positions.
The block 76 is provided with a screwthreaded aperture extending therethrough,
--said block thus constituting a nut to cooperate with a hollow screw 98 which extends therethrough. The outer end of this hollow screw 98 is journaled in a lug 99 depending from the turret-slide. The hollow screw 98 is provided at its outer end with a squared hole 100 adapted to receive a socket-wrench for turning said screw by hand when desired. As willbe seen, by loosening the clamp nut 97 and turning the hollow screw 98 the turret-slide will be ad justed lengthwise with relation to the block 76, or said block will be adjusted with relation to the turr'et-slide.
the position shown in the drawing the end of the screw 98 abuts against a part which at the time constitutes an abutment therefor,
and with the parts in such position when the screw 98 is turned the turret-slide will be moved with relation to the block and the position of the turret-slide be thereby tadusted with relation to its operating cam.
Extending within the hollow screw 98 and splined thereto, and so as to be turned therewith, is a screw-rod 101. This rod 101 not interfere with the advancing On the other hand it- 1 With the parts in is jou rnaled in a cross-bar 102 on the frame.
A connecting bar 103 is secured at its inner 101, being keyed to said hollow screw, will be turned therewith, and the turning of said such a large diameter screw 101 will, through its engagement with the projection 104C, cause a movement to be imparted to the cross-slide base lengthwise of the'frame corresponding to the movement imparted tothe turretslide. Thus with this construction by turning the hollow screw 98 both the turret-slide and the crossslide will be simultaneously adjusted by a single operation and will always. maintain the same relation to each other in any adjusted position.
By reason of the fact that the cross-slide is operated by the'longitu'dinally sliding bar 81, it is desirable, in order to provide for the adjustment of the cross-slide above referred to, to provide means whereby a corresponding adjustment will be made in the connection between the sliding bar 81 and the cross-slide 80. His for this purpose that the supplemental bar'87 with the rotary screw 88 mounted therein is provided, said screw 88 engaging the half nut formed on the bar 81. For the purpose of turning said screw 88 the unthreaded end of the screw 101 is extended therethrough and splined thereto. Consequently when the hollow screw 98 is turned and the screw 101 is turned thereby, the hollow screw 88 will be turnedby said screw 101, which will effect the proper adjustment between the sliding bar 81 and the supplemental bar 87, and so that whenever the cross-slide is adjusted the cross-slide mechanism and the distancebetween the roll 82 and the roll 86 will be correspondingly. adjusted. As will be seen, this adjustment of the cross-slide mechanism will be effected simultaneously with the adjustment of the turret-slide and the cross-slide and by the same operation.
In the present machine the pawl 105, which engages the pins 106 on the turret 74 for indexing said turret, is mounted on the connecting bar 1031 and pivoted thereto at '107. As will be seen, therefore, whenever operation by the rack-bar speed.
Secured to or fected simultaneously with and by the same which the adjustment ofthe turret-slide, the cross-slide, and the crossslide mechanism is efiected.
As hereinbefore vided whereby the speed of the spindle and the reversal of the spindle will be automatically effected at the desired times, and also whereby the speed of the advance or feeding movements of theturret-slide or cross slide may be automatically varied, and also whereby the return movements of theturret at a constant speed may be automatically effected. The' means for thus automatically efiecting these several operations will next be described.
As hereinbefore explained, the change in the speed of the spindle from a fast speed to a slow speed or vice versa is effected by a shifting of the clutch 30. It remains, therefore, only to describe the mechanism for automatically shifting said clutch 30. Beferring to Figs. 3 and 6, the clutch 30 is engaged .by one end of a clutch-lever 108 pivoted to the frame at 109. The lower end of said clutch-shifting lever extends between two collars 110, 110, secured to a sliding rod 111. Said rod 111 is connected to a rock-- arm 112 secured to a hollow rock-shaft 113. formed integral with the rockshaft 113 is a segment-gear 114, the teeth of which engage th a sliding bar 115 (Fig. 19). from the outer pin 116 adapted to be engaged by a cam or dog A adjustably secured in a T-slot 117 on the periphery of the cam-drum 72. In Fig. 3 the clutch 30 is shown in engagement with the gear 29, at which time the spindle will be rotated at the fast speed. When 115 is actuated by the engagement of the pin 116 with the cam A, the rod 111 will be moved to throw the clutch 30 out of engagement with the gear 29 and the will then be rotated at the slow It will be understood that a .corresponding dog or cam (Fig. 27) is to be secured in reverse position in the T-slot 117 for the purpose of shifting the rack-bar 115 in the opposite direction, thereby throwing the clutch '30 back into engagement with the gear 29 to change the spindle back to Projecting the fast speed.
Referring next to the mechanism for automatically reversing the spindle, this is effected, as above stated, by shifting the clutch 22. The shifting of this clutch 22 is effected by an extended movement of the rod 111. Referring to Fig. 3, the clutch 22 is operated by the clutch-shifting lever 65 secured to and operated by the rock-shaft 66. Secured to said rock-shaft is a downwardly extending arm 118, the lower end of which arm extends between two collars 119, 119,
secured to said rod-111. As shown in Fig. 3,
stated, means are pro- I e teeth of a rack formed on end of the rack-bar 115 is afrom one position of the speed through the action of the pins a certain amount of vided to permit the clutch shifting lever108 to be moved to disengage the clutch 30 with movement to said arm 118 and thus without effecting any moveout imparting any ment'of the clutch 22. hen it is desired that the arm 118 shall be moved to shift the clutch 22, a greater extent of movement is to be imparted to cam A (Fig. 27) of the camdr um,
secured in'the T-slot 117 said cam A being provided-with a cam face of correspondingly greater length than the cam face of the dog A. When, therefore, the pin 116 on the rack-bar 115 is engaged by said dog A the rod 111 will be moved a sufficient distance to shift the clutch 22 and thereby reverse the spindle. It will be noted that by reason of the lost motion referred to, before the arm 118 is moved to shift said clutch 22, the clutch 30 will have been disengaged by the movement of its shifting lever 108.
As above explained, when the clutch 22 is shifted to reverse the spindle. the clutch 51 is simultaneously shifted to prevent the re versal of the cam-drum. It will be understood that at the time the clutches 22 and 51 are shifted the cam-drumis being operated by-the independent train of mechanism by which return movements are imparted to the turret-slide. if a dog or cam, such as A, be so located on the cam-drum as to cause the rod 111 to be moved while the cam-drum is being operated by the feeding train of mechanism that is being operated through the clutch 51, the result would be to stop the entire machine, because in such case both clutches 22' and 51 would be moved to mid-position, and as the rotation of the cam-drum will be thereby arrested there would be nothing to complete the shifting of said clutches.
Referring next to the means for automatically varying the speed of the cam-drum 72, and consequently the speed of the feeding movements of the turret slide, as hereinbefore stated four different speeds are provided for by the employment of the two differential speed reducing gear boxes 58 and 60. The operation of the cam-drum shaft 63 through one or the other of said gear boxes and the speedat which said shaft will be rotated is automatically controlled by the movements of a rod 120. It will be understood that this rod is caused to occupy four different longitudinal positions. one for each of the four different speeds for the feeding movements of the turret. It will be further understood that the shifting of the rod 120 to another effects a change the rod 111, and this is automatically effected by providing a dog or It will be further noted that 115 are spaced sufficiently the, arm 118 said lost motion being prowith their cooperating the different positions 121 and the pawls 122, Figs. 5 and 7, which coiperate with the internal gearing in the gear boxes 58 and 60, respectively. Three of the four different speeds referred to are provided for by the three different pins 121 pawls 122, while the fourth and slowest speed is provided for by a permanent connection in one of the gear boxes.
Referring now to the means for giving to the rod 120, said rod is provided at its outer end with rackteeth which engage a pinion 123 on a transverse shaft 124 mounted in suitable bearings. Said shaft 124 is provided at its other end with a pinion 125 which teeth on a sliding bar 126. The outer end of said rack-bar 126 is beveled on opposite sides and is adapted to be engaged by a dog or cam C secured in a cam-slot 127 in the cam-drum. Said rack-bar 126 is also provided at its outer end and on its upper surface with a series of stops or shoulders 128,
three in number. Pivoted to the frame, or to a cover which is bolted to the frame, is a swinging lever 129 which is adapted to engage one or the other of the shoulders 128 according to the position of the rack-bar 126. It will be understood that for the four speeds referred to there will be four dogs or cams C around the periphery of the camdrum, and that these several dogs, which are adjustable, will be adjusted to different positions so that the rack-bar 126, and consequently the rod 120, will be moved by said dogs in turn to four different positions. It will be further understood that as said rackbar 126 is moved to one position or the other the swinging lever 129 will engage one or the other of the shoulders 128, and thus hold said rack-bar in the position to which it has been moved by the dog which actuates the same.
For the purpose of tripping the lever or latch 129 when desired another series of cams B, secured in the T-slot 130 formed in the cam-drum, are provided. Each of these cams B is adi-ns'itable radially as well as peripherally. The-lever or latch 129 is secured to a rock-shaft 131 mounted in a bracket 132 secured to the frame. To the opposite end of said roclrshaft 131 is secured an arm or lever 133, the end of which lies in the path of the dogs or cams B. By adjusting the several dogs or cams B radially the rock-shaft 131, and consequently the lever 129, will be moved outward a greater or less distance, as desired, and so as to permit the movement of the rack-bar 126 a distance from one step 128 to another, or any-other desired distance within the range of movement of said rack-bar. As shown in Fig. 1 the spiral spring 134 surrounds the outer end of the rod 120, said spring abutting against a collar 135 secured to said rod and at the other end ment 136. 1 j
/ As shown in Fig. 11, it willbe seen that the r0d120 and the rack-bar 126 are arranged on opposite sides of the transverse shaft 124, and, so rod 120 and rack-bar 126 are in opposite directions, or in other words, when the rackbar 126 is moved to the left in Fig. 19, the rod 120 will be moved to theright in Fig. 1. As will be further seen, when said rod 120 ismoved to the right in Fig. 1 the spring 134 will be compressed, and so that, when the rack-bar 126 'is free to move, said spring will serve to move the rod 120 and rack-bar 126 in the opposite direction.
- As will be seen, by a proper arrangement and adjustment of thecams C and B on the cam-drum, the rod 120 will be automatically moved into any one of its four positions to give to the cam-drum a rotation at any one ofthe four different speeds for imparting feeding movements to the turretslide.
As hereinbefore stated, the return movements of the turret-slide are effected by a separate train of mechanism, and at a constant fast speed as compared with the feeding movements thereof. The operation of this separate return train of mechanism for imparting the return movements to the turret-slide is controlledby the clutch 68, 69, that is, when the return movement of the turret is to beefi'ected the clutch-member 69 is to be moved into engagement with the clutch member 68. This engagement of said clutch-members is likewise automatically effected by the movement of the rod 120. As shown in Fig. 5, the inner end of said rod 120 abuts against the lower end of a swinging lever 137 pivoted to the' frame at 138, which swinging lever, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, surrounds the shafts 32 and 63. The hub of the clutch member 69 is provided at its outer end with a thrust collar 139 against. which the swinging lever 137 bears, as shown in Fig. 5. With this construction, as will be seen, when the rod'120 is free to be thrown .to the left in Fig. 1 by the. spring 134, the movement of said rod under the action of said swinging lever 137 and thrust collar 1'39, serve to move the clutch member 69 into engagement with the clutch member 68, and thus start up the train of mechanism for imparting the fast return movements to the turret-slide. for the rod 120 to be thus free to be actuated by the spring 134, it is necessary that one of the dogs B shall operate to raise the latchlever 129 sufliciently high to disengage all of the stops 128 and thus completely release the rack-bar 126.
It will be seen that the position of the rod 120 which determines the speed of the against a I fixed abutthat the movements of said 1.;
spring will, through the cam-drum for the feeding movements of the turret-slide is regulated or controlled by two sets of cams on the cam-drum in connection with a spring for actuating said rod in one direction and alatch adapted to engage one or the other of a series of steps on the rackbar 126, which latch thereby serves to hold the rod 120 against the action of said spring in any one of" its adjusted positions corresponding to the steps on said rack-bar.
It will be further seen that the two sets of cams referred to are mounted in two separate slots on the cam-drum and thus may, if desired, be adjusted in close relation to each other or even directly in line with each other, as shown in Fig. 19.
There remains to be described the feature which consists in providing means whereby a facing tool arranged axially of the spindle may be advanced and retracted in unison with the advancing and retracting move-- ments of the turret-slide.
Referring to Fig.1, the facing tool 140 is carried by a shaft 141 which extends axially through the hollow spindle 14. Pivoted to a bracket 142 secured to the frame is a lever 143, one end of which lever is pivotally connected to the outer end of the shaft 141 and the other end of which lever is pivotally connected to an adjustable nut 144. Preferably each end of said lever is forked to engage the end of the shaft 141 and the nut 144, respectively, on opposite sides thereof. The nut. 144 engages a screwthreaded portion of a sliding rod 145 which is mounted to slide in a bearing 146 on the frame. Secured to the rod 145 is a collar 147, and arranged between this collar and the end of thebearing 146 is a spiral spring 148 surrounding the rod 145. Secured to said rod 145 on the opposite side of said bearing is another collar 149. Mounted on and secured to the top of the turret 74 is an arm or upward projection 150, and this arm or projection 150 is so mounted on the turret that in one of the indexed positions of the turret thetop of said arm will be in line with the sliding rod 145, but in the other indexed positions of the turret, will be out of line with said rod.-
The operation of this facing tool mechanism will be readily understood. As the turret-slide advances when the turret is in the indexed position, which brings the arm 150 in line with the sliding rod 145, said arm 150 will be caused to engage the end of the sliding rod 145, and then as the turret- I slide continues to advance, will operate to move said rod to the left in Fig. 1, which movement through the lever connection will serve to move the shaft 141 and the facing tool carried thereby to the right and thus into operative engagement with the work held in the chuck 15, the continued advance of the turret-slide servlng to give a corresponding feeding movement to the facing tool in its operation upon the work. By turning the rod 145 in the nut 144Vthe position of the forward end of said rod may be adjusted to cause the proper feeding movement to be given to the facing tool, according to the work to be done thereby. \Vhen the turretslide is retracted the spring 148, which has been compressed during the movement of the rod 145 referred to will operate to return said rod to 'its normal position.
As the work operated upon by the facing tool 140 is being rotated it is necessary that said facing tool and its shaft shall be held against rotation while in engagement with the work, and said facing tool and its shaft are so held against rotation by the lever 143 through which the advancing movement is imparted to said shaft.
It is desirable when the last tool has operated and the work has been completed that the machine shall be automatically stopped. This may be accomplished by so locating a dog A on the cam-drum that the clutches 22 and 51 will be actuated while the camdrum is being operated by the feeding train, which will result in said clutches being moved to mid-position, thereby stopping not only the movements of the turret-slide, but also the rotation of the spindle. Preferably the parts are arranged so that, after the last tool has operated, the turret-slide will be retracted, and the 'turret indexed, and so that a feeding movement of the turret-slide will then be commenced at a slow speed for the purpose of causing said clutches 22 and 51 to be thus moved to midposition. 4
