Description

UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIon WILLIAM MARTIN SIMMONS, OF HINTON, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO FRANK R. PUCKETT AND ONE-THIRD T0 WILLIAM H. GARNETT, OF HINTON, ,WEST
VIRGINIA.
COMPOSITION OF MATTER TO BE USED IN PACKING JOURNALS OF RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 11, 1907.
Patented June 1, 1909.
Serial No. 383,316.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MARTIN SII MoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hinton, in the county of Summers and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful composition of matter. to be used in packing journals of railway-cars, engines, and other journals where high speed 1s requlslte and for thoroughly oillng and lubricatin the same, of which the following Isa speci cation.
Graphitenfl; 50 pounds. White lead ground in oil 50 Clean grease 37 Lye (any standard brand) 9 These ingredients should be thoroughly mingled 1n the following manner; Take the required amount of grease or fat, place it in a kettle and heat by a slow fire until it becomes of an oily consistency and then add the lye slowly, stirring all the time, gradually add the graphite and white lead in equal proportions until the entire'composltion is complete, stirring the mixture constantly for twenty minutes or half an hour. In using the above named composition the journals or other parts of machinery on which the same is to be used should be thoroughly cleansed, when the composition can be applied as a paste, but for use in keeping the journals of railway cars and engines cool cotton Waste should be dipped into the composition and the journals packed in the usual manner.
By the use of the abovenamed composition all the parts of the machinery necessary to be lubricated are kept thoroughly saturated with oil and the parts are maintained at a low degree of temperature, and the composition gives additional life to the machinery and materially lessens the expense and cost of keeping the same lubricated, and in suitable condition for service. Packing with the above composition is only required,
