` f Naoeaaaei;
* i APPARATUS FOR PRESSING oIGARs.
To ally whom it maylcvoncrem:
Beit Aknown that f we, KARL VVIMMER,
cigar-assertingmaster, residing at Seclienheim, near- Mannheim, Germany, KARL HARn'niechanician, residing at 3l Eichelsheimerstrasse, Mannheim; Germany, and ANTONfHERTEnmerchant, residing at 49 `Meerfeldstraisse, Mannheim, Germany, have kand sizein packets fof 1/20 thousand or f5() pieces may be readily, uniformly and throughly pressed from both sides as well as from above as required.`
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of `parts hereinafter. more fully described, illustrated, andclaimed.k f
` the front-elevation of an apparatus con-V structed in accordance with this invention;
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is Fig; yZ'isthe planxview of the saine from above; Fig. 3 is ythe plan view from below, `and Fig. 4 is a side-elevation.
The apparatus; consists of a wooden box with afrigid bottom a, ay yrigid back-wall b, rtwo movable side-walls c, and a movable cover, but withouta front wall. The cover consists of three separate wooden blocks d1, d2 andi?, and two pieces d4 and d5 of sheetmetal overlapping each other and fixed to the twofouter blocks d1 and d3; d6 is a bar ixed kiii the blockdland projecting through a bore of the block d2, and into a bore of the block da. l
61,' e2 are two @amp-irons, the vertical arms e1 of which areiixed to the side-walls c,
while their horizontal arms e? project into a groove al of the bottoni a and lie close to the n underface ofthe same. (At the end of the horizontal arm e? of each cramp-iron there is fixed a'screw-nutf, through which projects a rightand left-hand kthreaded screw-spindle g lying in the grooveal. rI`his screw-spindle is rotatably7 mounted in a bearing 7i xed to the bottom a and carries on its one end a hand-wheel f f l 7c are tworotatable and vertically movable holders for ther cover d, lmade of wire, the Straight shaft of which projects into a somewhat` larger bore Z ofthe side-wall c, while their annular headrests upon the block d1 or j Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 17, 1908. Serial No. 458,312.
Patented June 1, 1909.
d3 of the cover. In each bore Z there is located a helical spring m surrounding the shaft of the holder lt', the lower end of which rests upon a disk n carried by the holder Z5, while its upper end abuts on a plate o fixed Vto the upper edge of the side-wall c.
rIhe upperedge of the back-wall b is provided with a scale p for ineasuringthe movement of the side-walls c.
The cigars to be pressed being loosely inserted into the pressing-box, the cover d being put upon the cigars, and the holders 7c being turned over the blocks d1 and cl3, the screw-spindle g is turned by means of the hand-wheel t', whereby the nuts f, and with these the cramp-irons el, e2, and the sidewalls c are forced toward each-other to a certain extent indicated by the scale p, so that the cigars receive the required horizontal pressure from both sides. In order to give them also the required vertical pressure from above, the pressing-box with the cigars contained therein is then put into an ordinary hand-press, in which the cover d is pressed down on the cigars. In the horizontal pressing operation the blocks d1, d2 and d3 as well as the sheet-metal pieces d4 and Z5 of the cover are also forced toward each otherby the side-walls c and at the same time raised by the expanding cigars against the action of the elastic holders 7c,y but without allowing the cigars to slide over one another.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An apparatus for pressing cigars coinprising in combination, a box provided with a rigid bottom, a rigid back-wall, movable side-walls, and a movable cover of variable length, elastic holders for said cover, and means for forcing said side-walls toward each other.
L.. An apparatus for pressing cigars comprising in combination, a box provided with a rigid bottom, a rigid back-wall, movable side-walls, and a movable cover consisting of two or more separate blocks, two sheetmetal pieces overlapping each other and fixed to the outer blocks, and a bar fixed in one of said blocks and projecting into a bore of the others, elastic holders for said cover, and means for forcing said side-walls, said blocks and said sheet-metal pieces toward each other. f
3. An apparatus for pressing cigars comprising in combination, a box provided with ics a rigid bottom, a rigid back-wall, movable side-walls having bores, and a movable cover of variable length, holders for said cover made of wire, a vertical straight shaft for each holder, said shaft projecting into the bore of the respective side-wall, horizontal annular heads provided on the vertical sha'l'ts, said heads resting upon said cover, springs located in said bores, surrounding the shaft of said holders and pressing them downward, and means 'for forcing said side-walls toward each other.
4. An apparatus for pressing cigars comprising in combination, a box provided with a rigid bottom having a groove, a rigid backwall, movable side-walls, and a movable cover of variable length, elastic holders for said cover, cramp irons fixed to said sidewalls, projecting into the said groove and lying close to the bottom, screw-nuts ixed to said cramp-irons, and a rightand left-hand threaded screw-spindle mounted in a bearing ixed to said bottom, projecting through said screw-nuts and carrying a hand-wheel.
5. An apparatus for pressing cigars com- 25 prising in combination, a box provided with a rigid bottom, a rigid back-wall, movable side-Walls, and a movable cover consisting ol' two or more separate blocks having bores, two sheet-metal pieces overlapping each other and fixed to the outer blocks, and a bar iixed in one of said blocks and projecting into the bore of the others, elastic holders for said cover, cramp-irons, iixed to said side-walls, screw-nuts carried by said cramp-irons, and a rightand left-hand threaded screw-spindle mounted in a bearing ixed to said bottom and projecting through said screw-nuts.
In testimony whereoil we have hereunto signed our names to this specification in pres- 40 ence ol' two subscribing witnesses.
