Be it known that l, GEORGE C. OARHART, vcitizen of the United States, and resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new' and useful 'Improvements in Typeri-itin@ Machines, of which the following` is a specification. i
My invention relates more particularly to platen release mechanisms, and is designed as an improvement on the construction .shown in the patentvof Alexander T. Brown No. 648,100, dated April 24th, 1900.
The main object of the invention is to simplify in construction and render more c 'lfective in operation this type lof platen releases.
To the above and other ends, my invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of devices hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims. i

In' the drawings, the platen is shownA as comprisingy ay hollow wooden core 1 and a sheath or outside coverin` of rubber 2, although said platen may lstructed. The resilient friction ring 9 is separated from the remainder of the )laten headby a 'kerf or slit 1G which exten sl almost entirely around the v'friction ring, leaving only a narrow neck or portion 17 to connect the latter with the body of the laten head. Thus the friction ring is fixedp to or united with the platen head and ratchet wheel. Opposite the connecting portion 17 the friction ring is split or cut away tovleave a' space 18 between its ends, so that the friction ring is substantially C-shaped.' v v v p The friction ring 9 of the platen head 6 enters the friction case 4 and the ratchet portion S of said platenv head abuts against the i' ace of the flange 5 of said friction case. .l portion 8a is off-set from the ratchet wheel or ring 8 and tits in the friction case near its mou th and between the ratchet ring 8 and the friction ring 9, from which latter the offset portion 8 is separated by the kerf 16 and with which it is connected by the portion 17.
The portion 8al of the ratchet ring fits Within the mouth of the friction case tightly enough to exclude dust, but the fit is such that the platen when released may turn readily on the platen head, the friction case 4 bearing on the off-set portion 8*.-

A release rod 33 is slidably mounted within the platen axle 19, entering a longitudinal perforation 34 formed in the latter at its right-hand portion. The right-hand end of the release rod terminates exteriorly of the platen wheel'23 and is provided with a iinger piece or abutment 35. The release rod 33 is provided near its left-hand end'with Va cross'pin 36 which extends diametrically of the lplaten axle 19ypassing through slots `37 inthe latter. The 'ends of the cross pin f. 36 are positioned to contact ywith the smaller or right-hand end of the cone 29.
The parts having been properly assembled, the bevel 28`at`the inner'or-left-hand end of the operating lever24 is engaged by the cone 29 and the" inner or longer arm of said lever will be forced outwardly or toward the surface of the platen by the pressure of the spring 32 acting through the cone 29.

Consequently, during the regular line spacing operation, the rotary movement of the plateny is limited to 4a distance corresponding to one or more teeth 11 of the ratchet wheel, The platen may be rotated regular line space distances, either-by usually employed line space mechanism or by turning either the lrnob 22 or the knob 23.
When it is desired to rotate the platen I variable distances, (by which is meant distances greater or less than the distances determined'by the spacing ofthe ratchet teeth 11) Ifor the purpose of writing upon blanks, printed forms,- ruled paper or the like, the linger button 35 is pressed inwardly or toward the left, giving a leftward longitudinal movement to the release rod 33 and causing the cross -pin 36 at the leftehand end of thel latter to slide the cone 29 leftiward along the -platen axle 19'against the pressure of the longen sides of the part 27 of the `lever 24.

a friction ring portion within said friction case. and a hub portion; a lever pivoted to said hub and operative on said friction ring; a. platen axle: a cone loosely mounted on said platen axle and operative on said lever; a collar fixed tov said platen axle; a. coiled spring' surrounding said platen axle between said collar and said cone, said spring operating normally to push, said cone outwardly, thereby actuatingl said lever to expand said friction ring againstisaid friction case and frictionally connecting said platen head with said platen; and a release rod slidably mounted 'within said platen axle and provided at its outer end with a finger button and at. its inner end with a pin operative on said cone. to force the latter inwardly, thereby freeing said lever and permitting said friction ring to spring away from the sides of said friction case to release said platen ihead from said platen.
