new and useful Improvements in Type Vriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for releasing platens from control by the linespace wheels of typewriting machines, and is in the nature of an improvement on the structure disclosed in U. S. Letters Patent No. 581,717, issued to G. V. Hall, May 4, 1897, in which the platen is releasable from the line-space wheel. Pressure against a sliding rod wedges the outer ends of a pair of toggle links against the line-space wheel An opposite movement of the rod releases .the clutch.
The principal object of this invention is to simplify and improve the devices with a view to rendering the construction compact and reliable, easily operated and inexpensiveto manufacture.
In place of a toggle, I employ'an axially slidable head having a series of clutching dogs pivoted thereto, to grip the inner periphery of the drum of the line-space wheel.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective rear view, showing the in vention applied to an Underwood machine. Fig. 2 is a rear sectional elevation, the platen being clutched to the line space wheel. Fig. 3' shows the platen released.

Types 1 strike a platen 2 fast on an axle 3 journaled in the ends 4 of a platen frame. A line-space wheel 5, having a drum 6, is loosely mounted on a barrel in the form of an annular flange 7 on a disk 8 fast to the axle, and is turned in the'usual manner. The wheel is held against lateral displacement by a guard 9. The usual detent 10 engages the wheel.
The platen is clutched to the line-space wheel by three equidistant radially-extending dogs 14: hinged at 15 to a head or carrier 17 within the barrel 7; said dogs (of which a greater or less number than three may be employed) projecting through slots Patented Feb. 27, 1912. v
16 in the barrel to bite the inner periphery of the drum 6 oft-he'line-space wheel. The
dogs'let .fit snugly between the walls of the slots 16, to prevent relative turning movement' between the line-space wheel and platen whenclutched together. They are pivoted in ears 18 projectlng from the head 17, connected to rotate with, the platen.
These dogs 14 operate soinewhat'like toggles, the length of each dog being slightly greater than the distance between the inner periphery of the drum 6 and the pivot 15. The drum preferably has an interior annular .groove 21, which maybe substantially V-shaped in cross-section, in which the ends of the dogs 14 are confined, said dogs biting upon the opposite side walls of said groove to afford a powerful grip. A finger-piece 19 is provided upon the outer end of a sliding hollow plunger or stem 20, the latter connected to the head 17. \Vhen said plunger is pressed to the leftat Fig.2, it forces the head 17 to slide in axial direction to rock the dogs and relieve the pressure vof their outer ends upon the drum 6 to enable the platen 2 to be freely turned.
The inner end of the hollow plunger or stem 20 which is supported on the axle 3, is cupped at 27 to slide over the hub 28 of the fixed disk 8. A returning spring 22 on the hub bears against the inner end of said plunger to return the head 17 to normal position,
' thereby causing the dogs 14 to bite the linespace wheel. The usual finger knob 23 to turn the platen 2 is fixed on a hub 24 which may encircle the plunger 20. Opposite setscrews 25, passing through radial slots 26 in the plunger 24, and engaging a groove or depression 25 in the axle, secure the knob 23 to the axle, and enable the knob to turn the axle and platen. Saidscrews 25 also operate to spline the plunger to the axle, and permit axial movement of the plunger to release the dogs.
By beveling the free ends of the dogs 14: (see Fig. 4) a comparatively slight pressure of the spring causes a strong bite. The strength of the bite isaugmented by the sloping or converging sides of the groove, between which the dogs operate like wedges, causing great pressureand friction; the tips of the dogs being rounded or out 01f so that they do not touch the'bottom of the groove.
Also a rigid clutch connection may be obtainedbetween the platen and line-space wheel by connecting the dogs with the bar rel 7 at points adjacent the bite of the dogs and wheel, as shown.
' Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line-space wheel and a platen,
said wheel having a V-shaped groove, of a slottedbarrel fast with the platen and on which the wheel is loosely mounted, and a clutch head within the barrel and having dogs projecting through slots in the barrel.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line-space wheel, and a platen and axle rotatable relatively thereto, of a slotted barrel fast on the axle, a line-space wheel having a drumloosely mounted on the barrel, an axially slidable head, clutch dogs pivoted on the head and extending through the slots int-he barrel, said drum having a groove, the walls ot which are. engaged by the dogs, and a finger piece controlling the 1 head.

9. In a typewrlting machine, the combina tion with a platen and-axle, a barrel fixed thereto, 1 and a line-spaced wheel loosely mounted on the barrel, of a clutch comprising an axially slidable head, dogs hinged tothe head to bite the line-spaced wheel, said dogs passing through axially-extending slots in the barrel ,to connect the clutch mechanism to the platen.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, a platen axle and a line space wheel, of areleasable means for connecting the line space wheel tothe platen a finger piece to operate said releasing means, said finger piece having a hollow stem whereby it is mounted on said axle, a finger knob through which said hollow stem extends, said hollow stem. provided with a longitudinal slot, and means passing through said slot to connect said finger knob to said axle.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, a platen axle and a line space wheel; of a releasable means for connecting the line space wheel to the platen, a finger piece to operate. said releasing means, said finger piece having a hollow stem whereby it is mounted on said axle, a finger knob through which said hollow stem extends, said stem having between its ends a cutaway portion, and connecting means between said axle and said finger knob at said cutaway portlon.
