FOOT-REST FUR CHAIRS, SWING'S, 66e.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1909.
Application filed `November 25, 1908. Serial No. 464,4124C.
pBe it known that we, WILLIAM ZABEL and BRUNO ZABEL, residents of Edgewood Park, in the' county 4of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Foot-Rests for Chairs, Swings, &c. and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
y kOur invention relates to foot-rests for n chairs and has special reference to a detachkablefoot-rest for rocking chairs, swings, etc. f The obj ect of our invention is to provide a cheap, simple andy efficient foot-rest for a rocking chair which can be readily and conkveniently attached to and be detached from the chair, and one which can be adjusted to thehposition desired when connected to the chair.
, combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and pari' y ticularly pointed out in the claims.
- *To enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to construct and use our improved foot-rest for chairs, we describe l the same more fully, referring to the accom- `r`panying drawing, in whichrvFigure 1 is a perspective view of a rocking rchair rand our improved foot-rest applied Fig. 2 is anenlarged side elevation y kof the foot-rest detached from the chair.
i bar. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the con- Fig. 3 is an enlargedsectional view of a portion'ofthe same andshowing the foot-board connection. Fig. 4 is a like view of the con nection between the carriage and supporting nection between the supporting bar and chair hook. n f ,'Like symbols of reference herein Indicate f like parts in each of the gures of the drawf 1n I is suitably curved in an ogee shape, and has the vertical and downwardly extendin portion 7 at its outer endfor detachably fitting within a socket 8 in a vertical portion S ex tending up from the axle 9 of a carriage 10, said end 7 being held within said socket by the inner face of the curved portion 7 on the bar 6 connecting said end, engaging with the upper end of the vertical portion 3 on the axle 9. The carriage 10 has the Wheels 11 detachably connected by the cotter pins 11 'at each end of the axle 9 for engaging with the floor and are preferably provided with flexible rims 12 thereon, such as rubber.
Extending above and across the supporting bar 6 is the foot-board 13, which is preferably provided with a suitable cushion 14 on its upper face and is adapted to be set at an outward and upward incline from the chair 1 when in position for use on said bar. This foot-board 13 is detachably and adjustably connected to the supporting bar 6 by means of said bar passing through a U- shaped or clamp hanger 15 secured to the lower face of the said board and having holes 16 in the sides 17 of the same for the reception of said bar. The under face of the bar 6 is provided with a series of recesses or seats 13 therein and a pin 19 on one side of the bottom 20 of the hanger or clamp 15 is adapted to engage with one of said seats and be held therein by a bent leaf spring 21 which is connected at one end to the inner side of the foot-board. 13 and curved, so that its other end is turned under and toward said board for bearing against the upper face of the bar 6.
When our improved foot-rest for chairs is in use, a person seated in the chair 1 and with the feet upon the board 13 will be 'comfortable at all times and can have the feet placed at the position desired for resting through the adjusting of said board on the bar 6, and in the movement of the said chair by rocking the wheels 11 on the carriage 10 will travel backward and forward along the floor with.
said chair, as well as conforming to the height of the chair seat through the pivoting of said bar to the hooked member 3 on said chair.
When it is desired to adjust the foot-board 13 or remove the same from the bar 6, the outer side of said board can be raised to compress the spring 21 which will thereby tilt the side of the hanger or clamp 15 carrying the pin 19, and permit said pin to be released from its seat 18 to allow the board to be slid l along and removed Vfrom said bar7 or placed at another position thereon so that upon releasing the pressure upon the said spring the pin will again engage a seat and hold said board in place.
It Will thus be seen that when the device 3 is assembled it can be attached to the hook 4 on thechair 1 by slipping the bar 6 over the vend 4 and onto said hook through the hole 5 in the inner end of said bar, and such end will hold said bar in place on said hook and enable said bar to have a slight sliding movement along said hook to permit a side moveits seat 18 on said bar, so that the foot-board 13 can then be slid off said bar7 and thereby enable all these parts to be stored, or with the attaching member 3/ for the chair 1 they can be conveniently packed i'or shipment.
Various modiiications and changes in the design, and construction of the various parts of our improved foot-rest i'or chairs may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit f of the invention or sacrificing any oi' its advantages.
What We claim as our invention7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a chair, oll a supporting bar, a Wheeled carriage connected to y said bar, a foot-board, a bracket connected. to
said foot-board, and a spring engaging with the bar to hold the bracket in engagement With the bar.
2. The combination With a chair, of a supporting bar, a wheeled carriage connected to said bar, a foot-board, a bracket carried by the foot-board and engaging with one side of the bar, anda spring between the footboard and bar for engaging with the other side of said bar.
3. The combination with a chair7 of a supporting bar connected to said chair and having seats therein, a Wheeled carriage connected to said bar, a foot-board movable along said bar, and a pin on said board for engaging With said seats to adjustably secure said board to said bar by a spring engaging With said bar.
4. The combination With a chair, of a supporting bar connected to said chair and having seats therein, a Wheeled carriage connected to said bar, a foot-board movable along said bar, a hanger or clamp on said board and extending around said bar, and a pin on said hanger or clamp for engaging with said seats to adjustably secure said board to said bar by a spring engaging With said bar.
5. The combination with a chair7 of a supporting bar connected to said chair and having seats therein, a Wheeled carriage connected to said bar, a foot-board movable along said bar, a pin on said board for engaging with said seats to. adjustably connect said board to said bar, and a spring on said board and engaging With said bar to hold the board in position.
6. The combination with a chair, of a supporting bar connected to said chair and having seats therein, a Wheeled carriage connected to said bar, a foot-board movable along said bar, a hanger or clamp on said board and extending around said bar, a pin on said hanger or clamp for engaging with said seats to adjustably connect said board to said bar, and a spring on said board and engaging With said bar to hold the board in position.
In testimony Whereoi, We, the said TIL- LIAM ZABEL and BRUNO ZABEL, have hereunto set our hands.
