WILLIAM FOX, OF PECK, MICHIGAN.
GOVERNOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1909.
Application filed November 20, 1908. Serial No. 463,577.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, iVrLLIAM Fox, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Peck, in the county of Sanilac and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to governors for steam engines and more especially to an arrangement thereof peculiarly adapted for traction engines whereby the limit of speed of the engine may be varied at the will of the operator without shutting down the engine itself and ire-adjusting the governor in the ordinary way.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The drawing is a view in vertical section of a governor embodying one form of the invention mounted on the cylinder of a traction engine or the like.
As shown in the figure a valve casing 1 of any conventional standard type is secured on the inlet of a steam cylinder 2 with the usual steam fittings 3 running to the throttle valve and other controlling means. A standard 4 of any preferred suitable design is secured on the casing and a vertical, longitudinally reciprocable spindle 6 is journaled in the upper portion thereof in axial alinement with an apertured valve seat 7 in the casing 1. The vertical position of this spindle is controlled by the usual centrifugal means as for example, weights or balls 8 connected by bell cranks 9 to the upper end of the spindle, a spring 10 limiting the outward movement of the balls when they are rotated by a bevel gear yoke 11 meshed to a driving gear 12 driven through the usual belt and pulley connections 13 from some rotating member of the engine proper, all these parts being of conventional standard type.
A valve closure 14 for the seat '7 is carried by a vertically reoiprocable member 15 passing through a packing box 16 in the bonnet of the casing 1 in axial alinement with the stem 6. The latter and the member 15 are made to move in unison by a suitable connec tion movable transversely to the stem and member and provided with guides whereby movement of the connection transversely to the stem se arates the stem and member or else draws t em together.
As a preferred form of construction, a pair of divergent rods 17 suitably secured as by a cap 18 at one end and a cross-bar 19 at their divergent ends, have sliding engagement with guide blocks 20 secured on the proximate ends of the stem and member. A link 21 connected to the cross-rod 19, a lever 22 articulated thereto and pivoted in a suitable bracket 23, and a bar 24 extending to the engineer's station on the engine form one means of shifting the connection in or out. Any convenient method of doing this may of course be used, its arrangement depending largely on the type of engine to which the governor is attached.
The divergent guides or rods 17, are disposed at such an angle to each other that the weight of the member 15 will not cause them to shift of themselves in the guide blocks 20 when in operation.
In operation, the engine governor is adjusted 1n the usual way to run at a normal mean speed. When on the road, if it is desired that the engine revolve at a higher than the mean speed, the engineer shifts the connection between the stem and valve member so that the valve closure is raised to a greater extent from its seat. Consequently, when the latter is open to the full extent, the governor allows the engine to run at a higher than mean speed. In other words, the engineer can vary the speed at which the governor controls the engine at will without leaving his station or stopping the engine.
The chief feature is the extreme simplicity of the connecting parts which may be made very light and rigid and therefore do not increase the load or weight of the working parts of the governor. Furthermore, the connection may be applied to any type of governor by sim ly cutting out a section of the valve stem thereof and substituting therefor the connection with the slide blocks.
it is obvious, as before noted, that a plate with divergent guide grooves or tracks, may be substituted for the divergent rods, al though the lightness and cheapness of the construction of the latter make them more desirable.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim as my invention is:-
1. A variable speed governor, comprising k 4.... WW
the combination with a steam valve casing, a closure therein, and a member for 0 erating the closure longitudinally reciprocab e in the casing, of a standard on the casing, a stem in substantially aXial alinementwith the closures member longitudinally reciprocable in the standard, a revoluble, centrifugally operated member reciprocating the stem, a connecting member having sliding connection With the stem and closure member adapted when moved transversely thereto to move the stem and closure member to or from each other, and link and lever connections for shifting the members.
2. A variable speed governor, comprising the combination with a steam valve casing, a closure therein, and a member for operating the closure longitudinally reciprocable in the casing, of a standard 011 the casing, a stem in substantially axial alinement with the closure member longitudinal y reciprocable in the standard, a revoluble, centrifugally operated member reciprocating the stem, a connection movable transversely to the stem and closure member consisting of divergent guides engaged respectively by the stem and closure member, and means for shifting the connection.
3. A variable speed governor, comprising the combination with a steam valve casing, a closure therein, and a member for operating the closure longitudinally reciprocable in the casing, of a standard on the casing, a stem in substantially axial alinement with the closure member longitudinally reci rocable in the standard, a revoluble, centritugally operated member reciprocating the stem, a connecting member movable transversely to the stem and closure member and having diverging guides, slide blocks on the stem and the closure member engaging said guides, and means for shifting the connecting member.
4. A variable speed governor, comprising the combination with a steam valve casing, a closure therein, and a member for o erating the closure longitudinally reciprocab e in the casing, of a standard on the casing, a stem in substantially axial alinement with the closure member longitudinally reciprocable in the.
standard, a revoluble, centrifugally operated member reciprocating the stem, a connection movable transversely to the stem and closure member, consisting of a pair of divergent rods secured together in spaced relation at their ends, slide blocks on the stem and closure member, each longitudinally movable on one of said. rods, and means for shifting the connection.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
