MATCH SAFE AND LIGHTER.
Application led January 2, 1909.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES G. PoR'r'rnUs and ANsoN LEROY PonTTnUs, citizens of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Safes and Lighters, of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a combined cigar clipper, match safe, and match lighter as hereinafter described in the specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of this invention is to provide a means for clipping the ends of cigars which means when being operated to clip the end of a cigar, also operates a mechanism for automatically selecting a match from the magazine in which the matches are situated and carrying said match upwardly, turning it to be in a vertical position to project out of the match safe and there be retained till removed by hand. We attain this object by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side view of the apparatus taken along the line 11 in Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the apparatus taken along the line 2 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is enlarged broken sectional view of the apparatus taken along the line 3 3 in Figs. 1 and 2 5 Fig. 4 is a detail broken-0E portion of the match safe showing the match lighting means; and, Fig. is a detail broken inverted view of the clipping lever and a portion of the match safe taken along the line 5-5 and showing the cigar clipping means.
The inclosing case 1 of the apparatus is provided with the top cover portion 2 and the base 3. One of the side portions of the casing 2 is provided with the hinge door 4 which is provided for the purpose of gaining access to the interior top portion of the casing 1 and the parts of the mechanism inclosed therein.
The top cover portion 2 is provided with the match exit opening 4L through which matches are removed one at a time. partition 5 extends from the under side of the cover portion 2, adjacent the match exit o ening 4a, to the inner bottom portion of Situated in front of the partition 5 is the hopper 6 upon which the Specification of Letters Patent.
Thel

matches to be used one at a time are placed, and the said hopper is hingedly connected to the interior surface of the front wall of the inclosing case 1 by the hinge 7 and supported at its opposite end by the stop 3.
The match deliverer 9 is provided with the slide-bars 10 which are adapted to fit and to slide longitudinally in the dove-tail formed grooves 11 for-med in the face of the partition 5; the match deliverer, therefore, is maintained in sliding contact with the surface of the partition 5 in its movement upwardly, clears the swinging end of the hopper 6, till the enlarged end portion 12 contacts 'I with the swinging end of said hopper 6 to agitate the matches resting thereon, so as to move them in position to contact or lie lengthwise up against the partition 5.
A notch 13 is formed in the top corner portion of the match deliverer 9, and the same is provided not only for the purpose of forming a clearance space to clear the match lighter holder 14 but also for the purpose of forming a gripping-j aw to grip the match between the side of the notch and the groove 14a formed in the surface of the match lighter holder 14. The match deliverer 9 is adapted to descend from the top position shown in Fig. 1 in dotted lines immediate the end of the match, shown projecting through the opening 3 of the top cover 2 of the case, when the match is removed. The match delivererI 9 is raised by the lever arm 1 5 which lever arm is pivoted on the in 16 carried on the fulcrum-bracket 17. The ever arm 18 is spoon formed at its free end and is provided with the counter-bores 19 in which the end of a cigar may be inserted to be clipped off. The shear knife 2O is pivoted at one end on the pin 21 secured in the fulcrum-bracket 17 and situated under the pin 1 6. The shear knife 2O is formed with a shear or beveled edge at its cutting end, as shown in Fig. 5, and the said cutting end portion of said knife is held in close contact with the i r bottom surface of the lever arm 19 by the re taining screw 22 'which screw extends through the longitudinally extending slot 2 3 (see Fig. 5), and is screwed into the lever arm 20.
The match lighter holder is composed of the block 14 which is adapted to iit in the slide-way 24 formed in the partition 5, and the said block 14 is slidably retained in said slideway 24 by the retaining washer 25 which is held securely against said block by the securing screws 26. One side of the projecting end of said block 14 is provided with a groove 27 CIW and the other with a tapered recess 28 as shown more particularly in Figs, 3 and l, in which latter recess is situated the match lighter 29 which latter is secured in position therein by the clamp 30 secured to said lighter block 14 by the screw 31. The top end portion of the lighter 29 is preferably made jagged, as shown in detail Fig. 4, so that the head of the match in passing over the jagged end ofthe said lighter will contact three points in succession and thereby he more readily ignited.
The lighter holder 1a is provided with the stem 32 which extends through the side wall of the case 1 and projects slightly beyond the outer surface thereof to contact with the spring 33. The retaining spring 33 is provided to yieldingly retain sa'id block 14 in position in its guide-way 24 to clamp the head end of the match between the groove 27 ol said block 14 and the vertical edge of the corner recess 13 formed in the match deliverer 9, to retain said match in a vertical position with its end projecting through the match exit opening 4a till such times as the match is removed; it will thus be seen that if the match that may remain retained in this position is not removed, the deliverer 9 will not descend to its lower position to receive a match till the delivered match is removed to release the deliverer 9 which on being thus released will descend to its lower position.
A retaining partition 34 situated within the inelosing casing 1 extends vertically downwardly in front of the partition 5 to almost touch the top surface of the hopper 6 and said retaining partition is provided for the purposer of retaining the greater number of the matches in the front portion oi' the case 1 and prevent them from crowding up against the deliverer 9.
The operation of this invention is as follows :-Suppose this device placed on a cigar counter or situated at a place convenient to a cigar counter. The person having a cigar and desiring to clip the end thereof applies the end of the cigar to the counter-bore 19 and presses the cigar downwardly to move the ever arm 18 downwardly to cause the cutting-edge of the knife 20 to clip oli" the end of the cigar projecting through the bore 19 beyond the under side of the lever 18. The downward movement of the end of the arm 18, of course, causes the upward movement ofthe end ofthe arm 15 which contacts with the lower end of the deliverer 9 to move it vertically upwardly to remove a match from the bunch contained in the case 1 and project the match partially through the delivery opening 4a to be taken hold of by the person wishing a light. Immediately the end of the rejecting match is taken hold of and drawn ongitudinally up from between the lighter holder groove 27 and the vertical edge ofthe notch 13. The action of drawing the match upwardly operates to gradually release the head of the match and in so doing permits the jagged points of the igniter to successively contact the head of the match to cause the latter to ignite. Immediately the match is released and removed the deliverer 9 descends into its lower position to receive a match on its delivering edge ready to deliver said match as before.
It will be noted that as long as a match is retained in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, that is projected vertically through the match exit opening, the match deliverer 9 is held in its higher position by the match which is pressed tightly against the vertical edge o1 the notch 13 by the match lighter holder 141, so that as longv as the match remains in this engaged position the match deliverer cannot descend to receive a match from the hopper 6 till the engaged match is removed.
Ve claim:
