Letras Paten: N 92,211, zaad July 6,1869. f
mPROl-EMENT IN BOILER-FLUE BRUSHES. 'l
The Schedule xefexllal to in these Letters Patent-I and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern Be it known that I, If. H. RYAN, of; Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fluo-Brushes, of which the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being 'had to' the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
The nature'of niy invention consists in clamping together the brush-sweep," consisting of straw, wire, slivers of hickory, or othersuitable material, by means of two clamping-plates, between 'which the brush' sweep is secured, by means of bolts; also to the man- -ner of attaching the clamping-plates to the jointed tubular handle by lock-nuts.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of` my improved flue-brush, the section being taken in the plane of 1-2. 1 'l Figure 2 is a transverse sectional elevation 4of the joining-nut and brush.
Figure 3 is au elevation of the exterior face of the line-brush. 'l'
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section ofthe brush', where-` in the bolts fm' Securing together thh'lllmPing'Plate. are dispensedwith.- y f A A are sections of gas-pipe or other suit'le tu-4 .tions in the plates 0 G, and spaces between the wire or other material ofthe brush, They'are located near the periphery ol' the clampingfplates, for thepurpose oi' securing properly the brushLsweep at a point as far as possible from the centre ofthe handle.
The inner and outer look-n nts, F and F', respectively, are screwed upon the threaded end of the tubular handle A, the lirst mentioned being in close contact with the outer face of the inner clalinping-plate G.
rIhe not F: is brought into close cptact with the outer-face of the exterior `clax1 1pingpl te"` C', which sei ,I i
tra] point of the brush. l A
In the modified fori'n of the foregoing-description of the lille-.h l'usb, .the plano-convex clamping-plates- O O, are used, and are caused to clamp between' them the brush-sweep D, by screwing up tightly the lockl nuts F F4 upon the handle A. l
Since it may be preferable tohave the straw 0r other material continuous through the centre of the brush, (not exhibited infig. l, and also in the Inod-- ilicd form in iig. 4, hut which may be thus described,) the clamping-plates are made concavo-convex, or box-shape, in order thatthe material may. have room tocross at. thecentre, fand when the lock-nuts are well screwed down upon the clamping-plates Gand G', the straw or other ymaterial between them is firmly'v npped at the. periphery of said plates (l C', and the i bolts E maybe dispensed with. It being desirable that great rigidity in the plates be attained, the use of' cast-iron is to' be preferred -to boiler-iron.
In the construction of thefiue-brush shown in figs.
1, 2, 3, the material employed in the brush-straw, slivers ot hickory, or other suitable material-is laid upon the clamping-plate C, which rests upon the lock-nut F, when the layers ofv bluish-material have beenlaid about the handle., in a radial direc-tion, the brush-ma terial being of 'such length that the brush may be round, square, or 'of other formadapting it for use ill l cleansing circular boiler-fines or chimneyflues. The clampix'ig-plate Ois located in place, as 'shown in iigy 1, the bol-ts E are tightened, and finally theflock-nut ,v F is screwed down to its seat, clampii'ig the brush-v -f material at the centre. t f,
' By means of the thimbles B, used in coupling together sections of the brush-handle, any desired lengthv may be given thereto. l
The tubular handle which I employ is much lighter, and also proportionally stronger than the rod now 'in f use. t
What I claim as new, anddesirc to secure by Letters Patent, 'is
The clamping-plates C O', and the bolts E, when j the same are constructed and arranged substantially in the manner herein'shown and specified. l" Y' Witnesses: ",v
