Be it known that I, HANS ltins, e citizen of the Empire of Germany, residing at Munich, Germany, have invented certain new anduseful Im rovements in Furnaces for Gasilying Cos s, Roasting Orcs, und the- Like, ci which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to furnaces s ecially suitable for the manufacture of coal)gas of theI tfpe having horizontally or obliquely er rang retort chambers adopted to contain the material. to be treated.
The present furnace is distinguished from similar furnaces hitherto known by the Inode of su porting the bottom Walls of the retort cham ers and by the arrangement of the llues or conduits for the heating gases and. the combustion air.

As will be seen from the drawings, the retort chambers o which are arranged side by side (three are shown in the example illus-A trated) are separ ted 'from each other by the vertical lues or' enduits c and d, and from the lateritl wallsf and g of the furnace, by

Air enters the lower portion of' the regenerster q through the conduit p and after traveling in zie-zag fashion through thc hori zontal channels r it rises through the channel s into the channels k terminating above par titions n. During its passage through the regenerator, the nir is preheated by the com-- bustion gases which travel downward, that is, in s, direction opposite to that of thenir, in channels t surrounding the air channels r. These combustion gases then pass in contact with the Water trough w and lesve the regenerator at u. The combustion gases travel from the generator v through sn upright channel :c to the heating channels m arranged adjacent to the air channel k. The preheated air is adlnixed to these combustion gases directly above the upper edges of the partitions n, that is to say, in the lower portion of the channels c, d which is bounds by the project-m; surfaces z of the retort bottoms h.
