I H. EIGHLEB COMBINED PENCIL SHARPENEB. AND CIGAR CUTTER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 10. 1908.

ATTORNEYS ENT OFFTQE.
HERMAN EIOHLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED PENCIL-SHARPENER AND CIGAR-CUTTER.
Application filed June 10,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN ErcHLEn, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Pencil-Sharpeners and Cigar-Cutters, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pencil sharpeners and cigar cutters, and the object thereof is to provide an improved combination device of this class which may be used for either purpose, whenever desired, and which may be conveniently carried in the pocket; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a back view of my improved pencil sharpener and cigar cutter, Fig. 2 a longitudinal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and indicating the method of using the device as a cigar cutter, Fig. 3 a front view of the device as shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 4 a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 3, Fig. 5 a perspective view showing the method of using the device shown in Figs. 1 to 4 as a pencil sharpener, Fig. 6 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing a modification, and;- Fig. 7 a transverse section on the line 77 of Fig. 6.
In the practice of my invention as shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, I provide a device of the class specified comprising a back plate a, and front plate I), said plates, in the construction shown in said figures, being oblong in form and curved longitudinally so that the device is segmental or semi-circular in cross section. The outer plate a is provided with inwardly curved side flanges 0, which are cut out centrally and longitudinally-to form shoulders a at a predetermined distance from the ends of said flanges, and the inner plate I) is provided with lugs or projections b movable between said shoulders and adapted to limit the longitudinal movement of the inner plate b in both directions,

in the operation of the device as hereinafter described. The outer plate a is provided at one end with a circular recess (1 having a cutting edge if, and the inner plate I) is provided centrally and longitudinally with an opening 6 one end of which, the end which is adjacent to and corresponds with the end of the plate a in which the recess a is formed, is circular in form as shown at b and provided with a cutting edge b At the opposite end of the opening b in the plate 5 is a projection 6 formed from a tongue out from the material of said plate at 19 said tongue being folded, in the form of construction shown, to form the U-shaped lug or projection I) by means of which the plate I) may be moved longitudinally of the plate a whenever desired.
Whenever it is desired to use this device as a cigar cutter, the plate 12 is moved into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the
late a, in this operation, being held in one liand and the plate I) being manipulated with the other hand, or with one of the fingers of the same hand by pressing in the proper direction on the lug or projection 1). 1n this operation the recess a in the plate a and the opening b in the plate 1) form, together, a clrcular aperture at c, and the tip of a cigar c is inserted into said aperture, after which the plate I) is moved backwardly into the position shown in Fig. 3, or into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, and this 0 eration cuts off the tip of the cigar as w11 be readily understood.
The cutting edge I) of the opening b in the plate 12 extends around the outer end of said opening, and the sides thereof as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and the aperture at 0 formed by the recess a in the plate a and the outer end portion of the opening b has a cutting edge entirely around it, and by reason of this construction the tip of the cigar is cut off entirely around the same as will be readily understood.
The method of using this device as a pen cil sharpener is clearly shown in Fig. 5, and in this operation the plate I) is projected far enough to expose all the main part of the opening b and a pencil d may be grasped in one hand and passed outwardly through the opening 6 and drawn back through the end portion thereof in such a manner that the cutting edge b will sharpen the pencil, it being understood that this operation is repeated and the pencil rotated until the Serial No. 437,633.
operation of sharpening the pencil is cometed.
The construction shown in Figs-6 and 7 is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 3, ex cept thatthe plates a and b are flat, or are not, curved in cross section, and in this form of construction the tongue from which the lug or projection b is formed is made shorter and formed into a transverse bead b and the operation of this form of construction will be the same as with that shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is
A combined pencil sharpener and cigar cutter comprising two plates slidably mounted one upon the other, one of said plates being provided in one end thereof with a semi-circular recess having a cutting edge, and the other plate being provided with an [plate forming an opening when the plate having the oblong opening formed therein is projected beyond the first named plate, and
said cutting edges being at the opposite ends of said opening, means for moving one of said plates longitudinally of the other, and
devices for limiting said movement and pre- I venting the separation of said plates.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 9th day of June 1908.
