COMBINATION FURNITURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1909.
Application filed July 28, 1908. Serial No. 444,914.
T o all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that l, NAPOLEON JOSEPH COTE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Furniture; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in furniture, and more particularly folding furniture, such as folding beds and the like.
It is especially designed as an improvement on my United States Patent No. 891,040.
Broadly speaking, it comprises a casing adapted to receive a pivotally mounted bed frame, supporting legs pivotally mounted on the casing, supporting arms pivoted to the casing, connections between the arms and legs, and means for locking the legs in operative position.
In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings, like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary section through the lower part of the bed casing, showing a side elevation ofthe invention in inoperative position; Fig. 2 is a similar view, with the invention in operative position; Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2 5 Fig. 4 is a front view of Fig. 1 Fig. 5 is a front view of Fig. 2; and, Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a folding bed in lowered position, showing the application of the invention.
The invention as a whole comprises a suitn able casing 1, adapted to completely and snugly receive a combination piece comprising a bed 2 and a wardrobe 3, which in the preferred form are securely fastened together to form substantially one piece, Vthe Wardrobe being accessible and adapted for use when the piece as a whole is raised and fitted within the casing, and the bed being accessible and ready for use when the piece is in its lowered position, all as will readily appear from Figs. l, 2 and 6 respectively. This combination piece is pivotally mounted at 4 on arms 5, the op osite ends of which are pivotally connecte to the inner faces of the casing 1 as at 7.
In order to prevent the combination piece falling with the full force of its weight, a retarding device is used, the operation and construction of which will be later disclosed. This retarding device comprises a rod 8 carried by brackets 9, or the like, which are suitably secured to the inside of the casing 1. ln the preferred form, this retarder is mounted in brackets on the bottom of the casing, though of course it may be mounted on the side or in other positions, provided it is so positioned that its function will be the saine. On the rod 8 is loosely mounted a spring 10 adapted to be compressed between yokes 11, mounted to travel freely on said rod. These yokes are pivoted to the arms 5 at points diametrically opposed, as shown in Fig. 3. As will be clear from Fig. 3, as the combination piece is lowered to the position of Fig. 2, the yokcs 11 will approach one another and the spring 10 will be compressed. Of course, the reaction of the spring as it is gradually compressed, will increase, and its resulting retardation of the arms 5 and the combination piece mounted thereon, will likewise gradually increase. the spring will be brought to bear at the lowest position of the arm 5, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the minimum efliciency when the arm 5 is in its highest position, as indicated in said Fig. 2 in full lines.
In order to allow free turning of the combination piece as a whole about the pivot point 7 preliminary to lowering the same, it is essential that a space be provided between the back of the casing 1 and the bed 2 at the moment it is desired to lower the piece. It is also essential to make the casing 1 as small as possible, and in order to accomplish both results, the pivotal connection 4 between the upper end of the arm 5 and the combination piece has been provided. Due to this construction, the device may first be pulled outward a sufiicient distance to permit it to be swung about the pivot 7 without binding against the back of the casing 1. The distance of this outward movement is limited by the post 12 with which the lower end of the bed contacts, and thus on continued movement of the same, the combined bed and wardrobe is tilted into a horizontal position. This post 12 forms a support for one end of Thus the maximum effect of l lli) the piece, while the opposite 'end is supported on the ornamental molding blocks 13 secured to the upper front edge ot' the wardrobe. The space which is necessarilT left between the lower end of the wardrobe and the bottom of the easing in order topermit lree movement of' the arms 5 and the turning ol the piece as a whole, may be Filled when the piece has been moved to upright position b v a drawer adapted to slide on guides l5. These guides 15, it will be noticed, also forni additional supports lor the posts 12, thus securing the posts more rigidlyT in position.
In order to reduce the 'friction between the top of the supporting posts 12 and the lower surface of the bed traine, slotted links le have been provided. These links are pivot* ed at one end to the posts 12, and are provided, in their upper ends, with slots adapted to loosely receive sliding pivot pins 16 se cured to the sides of the bed 'traine at points adj aeent its rear edge. The slots in the links are of just sufficient length to allow the rearward movement olfthe bed into the back of the easing after it has been raised, while the distances between the bottoms of the slots and the pivotal` connections of the links le with the posts 12, are ust sudisient to insure tree swing of the bed traine over the tops oi the posts l2 without a rubbing eontaet.
ln order to give additional support to the bed, when in. loweree 1aosition, legs 17 are provided. These legs are pivotcd to the inside of the easing 1, and are connected by links 18 to the arnis A elongated slots in their upper ends adapted to looselj-,fY receive slidingI pivot pins 19 on tin;
arms lhe upper ends of the legs 17 are provided with notehes 2Q, adapterhwhen the legs are in operative position, to receive locking studs 21, fixed to the arms 5. Consequently, when the bed Jtrame is lowered, the links 1S will act to push the legs 17 to operative position, and the studs 21, as the bed drops, will fit into the notches 2O and securely lock the legs against further move- The linlrs 18 have ment. W hen the bed frame is raised, the studs will first be withdrawn from their notches, andthe legs will then be gnaduallfyr raised and withdrawn into the easing.V
It is clear that el'ianges maj,r be made in the construction, arrangementv and disposition ot the several parts, and that substitutionsY vLetters Patent, is :M
1. `Con'ibination furniture et the eliaracter -de-Seribed, comprising a easing, arms inevalilj; iounted thereon and adapted to support a bed, supporting le-gs mounted in said easing, and slidi conL ections between said legs and said arnis. Y
2. Combination furniture ot the charaeter described, comprising a easing, arnisinovably mounted thereon and adapted to sup port a bed, supporting'legs mounted'in said easing, and connections between said legs and said arins, said connes-tions comprising a slotted linl pivotallv eonneeted to said leg and a pin secured. to said arm and playing in the slot let said linlr.
3.
