POWDER-KEG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1909.
Application filed August 16, 1907. Serial No. 388,904.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL O. OLAUen- LIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Petersburg, in the county of Menard and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Powder Kegs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to powder kegs, the object being to provide a keg which is so constructed that the powder can be readily removed, so as to facilitate the filling of cartridges used for blasting.
Another object of my invention is to provide a keg with a dispensing opening in its side so that the last grains of powder can be removed therefrom with as much ease as when the case is full, thereby overcoming the difficulties now existing with kegs which are provided with only one filling opening.
Another object of my invention is to provide very novel means for closing the open ings in the keg so as to make it perfectly air-tight, thereby preventing moisture from reachlng the powder.
Another object of my invention is to provide very novel means for fastening the caps closing the openings.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification :Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved keg, showing my improved fastening members attached, and in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the keg and the fastening member on the side. .Fig. 3 is an en larged detail side view of my improved fastening member showing it attached to a portion of the keg. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the caps used for closing the openmg.
Referring to the drawings A indicates a keg, B the cap and C my improved fastening member. The keg is preferably formed of sheet metal substantially ovalshaped in cross-section, having a flanged filling opening formed in its top and a dispensing opening in the apex of its side adjacent the top. The fastening members C are exactly alike and the description of one is suflicient for both, and is formed of an oblong plate having an opening formed therein, through which the flange of the opening of the keg is adapted to extend and be secured by crimping the flange down on the plate forming an air-tight joint. The flanged cap B is then inserted in the openings so as to securely close the same. The ends of the plate form flaps one of which. is provided with a tongue C and the other with spaced slots C C adapted. to receive the tongue. The flap with the openings is then bent over the cap, the bend being at the place shown by dotted lines. The other flap is then bent over the place shown by dotted lines upon the end and the tongue C is forced through the slots which aline with each other when the plate is bent. The tongue is then bent back upon. itself which securely locks the cap in the opening.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have provided a very novel keg with a filling and a dispensing opening which are closed by very novel fastening m embers which can be readily opened and closed as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.. An opening and closing device for kegs comprising an apertured plate adapted to be secured over the opening of a keg, a cap for closing said opening and flaps carried by the plate adapted to be folded one upon the other over said cap and. secured together.
2. A powder keg having an opening in its side adjacent one end, a cap fitting in said opening, and a plate secured to said keg pro vided with flaps adapted to be bent one upon the other over said cap, one of said flaps being provided with a locking tongue.
3. A powder keg having a flanged opening in its side adjacent one end, an apertured plate fitting over the flange of the opening, and secured to the keg by crimping said flange, a cap fitting in said opening and flaps carried by said plates adapted to be folded one upon the other over said cap, one of said flaps being provided with a locking tongue adapted to be locked into slots formed in said plate.
