application and April 28,1908. serial no. name.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL E. GoNoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self- Igniting Folded Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to improvements in match boxes, and has for its object to generally improve, simplify, and increase the utility of devices of this natureI I Further and other objects will appear in thecourse' of the following specification.
- In the drawings: Figure 1. is a plan view of a blank from which a match box is constructed, Fig. 2, is a front elevation of the completed match box showing the cover flap in raised position, Fig. 3, is a similar-view showing the cover flap in closed position, Fig. 4, is a side elevation of one of the clam s employed to form the sides of the mate receiving pocket, Fig. '5, is a side elevation of Fi 3, Fig. 6, 1s a modification showing a di erent form. of a pocket for the matches, and Fig. 7, is a front elevation of the pocket of Fig. 6.
In constructing a match box in accordance with this invention, a sheet of card board or other suitable material 1, is employed which is-bent along the line 2, to form the cover flap 4, and which is further bent along the line 3, to form the front of the match receptacle, the rear of the match receptacle being formed by the lower portion of part 5 of the blank 1. As illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and 5' of the drawings I employ a clamp 7, which may be formed of sheet metal or other suitable material, this clamp being U-shape in or rs section, and receives the side edges of the parts 5 and 6, the clamps being secured firmly to said parts and forming the sides of the match pocket or receptacle. As
depicted in the drawings I provide on the inner edges of the front flap 6 a layer of abrasive material 9, which bein located at a point adjacent the top end 0% the match pocket or receptacle wil ignite the matches prior to the removal of the latter from the receptacle or pocket. It will be observed that the front flap at its inner end pro'ects slightly beyond tnv inner terminals 0 the clamvs 7 which thereby pro ides a retainin a for the cover flap 4, when the latter is m c osed position as depicted in Fig. 5.
It willfurther be-seen that in cases where sheet metal is used as the material for clamg 7, the freeedges of the latter may be pinche so as to frictionally grip the parts 5 and 6 and thereby provide an inexpensive and yet efficient mode of connectin such parts.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have ustrated a slight modification wherein a sheet of corrugated card board 10 is employed, the corrugatiofis' or t e 11 of which form individual pockets matches. In this instance it is possible to glue the sides of the corrugated card board 10 to the front flap sive material 9, is located at the outer end of the corrugated card board in order that when the matchesare removed they will be ignited as in the preferred form of the invention.
By locating the clamp 7 at a point below the upper or inner edge of the front fla 6, the latter has a certain amount of freedom as regards its outward movement to provide for the easy insertion and removal of 'the 6. The strip of abra lower or inner end of the cover flap 4i.
Further by locating the lower or outer ends of the clamp 7 at a point above the lower or outer end of the ocket or receptacle, no hindrance is he to the easy removal and insertion of the match heads, which occupy the space at the bottom of the receptacle or pocket.
What I claim is:
A match b'ox composed of a body having a cover flap and a front flap, clam s engaging along the side edges 0 said ront flap and said body, ,the inner end of the front flap extendingbeyond the inner ends of said clamps to provide a retaining flap for the cover flap, the outer end of the front flap and the outer end of said bodyextending beyond the outer ends of the clamps-so as to provide space for the match heads, said front flap at its inner end and on its inner face havin a layer of abrasive material thereon, said abrasive material being applied to said inner face of the front flap PHILIP SANDS, LEWIS 0. Known.
