To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that I, TWILLIAM F. BARN- HARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hog-Ringers, and has for its object to provide a simple and effective device of this descri tion by which a doublepointed ring may be fastened in the nose of the hog in such manner that any attempt on the part of the animal to root will cause the points of the ring to stick in the tender portion of the nose, thus preventing the animal from rooting and injuring the sod or crops.

Iith these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a ringing tool showing the hook in place between the jaws thereof just prior to insertingl the saine in the nose of the hog; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tool, showing one of the jaws partly in section. Fig. 3, illustrates the position the ring takes when inserted in the nose of the hog, and Fig. 4, an edge view ofthe ring. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the seats on the inner side of the apertures C.

In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A and B represent the jaws of the ringing tool, the former having therein a recess for receiving the hooked portion of the artially formed ring, while the jaw B has formed therethrough the holes O, perpendicular to the face of the jaw member one of which is shown in Fig. 2 for the passage of the points of the ring during its formation, and this aw also has a notch D for the reception of the two eyes a of the ring.

In producing the partially formed ring I take a single piece of wire and so bend it as to produce the two hooks l) having the two eyes a, and when it is intended to insert these hooks in the nose of the hog they are placed in the ringing tool as shown in Fi 1, and by a single movement the prongs or the hooks are forced through the gristle of the nose of the hog and a double ring is formed, the pro- Speccation of Letters Patent.

jecting points of which pass through the eyes a and into the holes C of the tool as shown in Fig. 2, thus securing the ring in place and placing the points which were previously sharpened in a position to stick into the hog should he attempt to root.

In order that the jaws of the ringing tool may be liinited in their movement as to make the exact ring desired I thread a set screw F through one of the handles of the tool in such manner that it will strike against the op osite handle thereof as will be readily un erstood.

One of the principal advantages of my imrovement is its exceeding simplicity and the fact that the double ring may be secured in the nose of the hog with one operation, and when so placed cannot be dislodged by accident.

I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is*- l. A hog ringer consisting of two interlocking jaws, pivotal connection between the jaws, ,one of said jaws provided with two longitudinal grooves, the opposing jaw member provided with circular recesses adapted to cooperate with the grooves in the first jaw member and bend a wire nose ring for hogs, said second j aw member provided with round apertures through the same from the bottom of the circular recesses and of reduced diameter from said recesses, said aaertures being perpendicular to the face of their jaw member, substantially as described.

2. A hog ringer consisting of two interlocking jaws, pivotal connection between the jaws one of said jaws provided with a plurality of longitudinal grooves, the opposing jaw member provided with circular recesses adapted to cooperate with the grooves in the first jaw member and bend a wire nose ring for hogs, said second jaw member provided with round apertures through the same from the bottom of the circular recesses and of reduced diameter from said recesses, said apertures being perpendicular to the face of their jaw member, substantially as described.
