ANVIL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN E. ANDREws, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at lVormleysburg, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anvils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in anvils and more particularly to anvils having a removable face plate and horn.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device of this character employing a novel manner and method of securing the face plate and horn to the body of the anvil.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character which will possess advantages in points of simplicity, efficieney and durability, proving at the same time comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of Construction and in the arrangement and oombination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of an anvil embodying my invention, showing the face plate thereof detached; Fig. 2, is an enlarged side view of a portion of the anvil partly in elevation and partly in section showing the parts assembled; and Fig. 3, is a side view of the horn.
In the drawings 1, denotes the body of the anvil which may be of the usual or any well known construction and is provided with a removable horn 2, said horn having a reduced screw-threaded portion 3, forming with the horn proper, a shoulder 4. The screw-threaded portion 3, is adapted to engage screw threads on the inner surface of the corresponding bore 5, in the body of the anvil for causing the horn to fit tightly against said body.

The groove in the body is preferably made slightly narrower than the tongue on the face plate, preferably about 1/32 of an inch narrower, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. In securing the face plate to the body, the said body is first heated to a dark cherry red, which 'will cause the same to eXpand. The tongue of the face is then forced into the groove 8, after which the anvil is immersed in water or other cooling agent. In cooling, the body of the anvil contracts and the groove being slightly smaller than the tongue, the face adheres closely to the body making it practically one solid piece. In order to remove the face for repairing or renewing the same, the anvil is again heated to a cherry red, and the body of the anvil will eXpand more and the face can then be removed by sliding the same out of the groove. In connection with the foregoing, it is proper to state that the face plate and horn may be made of fine grade steel and the body ol' some cast material of much cheaper quality. It will thus be seen that when the face or horn of the anvil becomes damaged by wear instead of going to the eX- pense of getting a whole new anvil or having the same repaired with great difficulty, the face or horn can be removed and dressed or replaced at a very nominal cost.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to coninc myself to the eXactness of the disclosure but may make suitable alterations and changes therein as fall within the scope of my invention, as set forth in the appended claim.
I claim- An anvil comprising a body having a groove in its top eXtending the entire length thereof, a face plate provided with a tongue extending the entire length of its under surface received within said groove, and a horn Secured to said body, part of said horn projecting thereabove to form a shoulder against which said plate abuts.
