JOHN W. MORAN, OF ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOOR-STOP.
Application filed November 30, 1908.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1909.
Serial No. 465,388.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN YV. MORAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Stops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in what may be termed door stops.
It has for its object to provide for preventing the forcible engagement of a door with the wall of a house and thus preventing marring or injuring of the wall, and also for 5 lessening noise and avoiding concussion, which would otherwise result from the casual or undue opening of the door.
The invention also has for its object to provide for arresting or limiting the move-- ment of the door, as when opened, either at a point distant from the wall or at a point with relation to the floor.
A further object is to carry out the aforesaid purposes in a simple, effective and inexpensive manner and whereby the angle of abutment between the door and stop may conform to the opening angle of the door.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figures 1 and 2 are side and rear elevations of the invention. Fig. 3 is a modification of the invention also in side elevation.
In carrying out my invention, I employ, preferably, a helical spring or resilient member 5 of any suitable number of coils and preferably tapered in longitudinal outline, as seen in Fig. 1.
The normal forward end of the spring or member 5 is adapted to receive thereinto a plug 6 preferably of some pliable material, as leather, rubber or wood, the same being formed preferably with an enlargement or head and adapted for abutment against and forming a butler for contact with the door when the latter is opened, as will be readily appreciated.
It will be observed that by reason of the contracted or tapered outline of said end of the spring or member 1, it will clamp the able fastenings for that purpose.
plug 6 in forcible engagement therewith for the effective retention of said plug in place, said plug being of such diameter or cross section as to contribute to that end;
The spring or member 5 has its inner or rear end formed with a right angled extension or arm itself terminating in a right angled portion 8, with connecting portion betweenthe members of said arms bent back transversely upon said members and forming lateral eyes 9, as more clearly (llSClOSG-(l in Fig. 2 and whereby the device is adapted for attachment to the floor, said. eyes receiving suit- It will also be noted that by reason of the pliable or yieldable character of the spring member 5, it may be deflected at such an angle as to conform to the opening angle the door and thus receive the pressure or force of the door squarely upon the plug or buffer member thereof thus lessening liability of the casual injuring or disarr nging of the device, in wnich event it would be desirable to replace or renew the same, required in the use of devices of this kind previously ennployed, but which is overcome by the use of my in ention.
in the modification as suggested in Fig. 3, substantially a simil construction is disclosed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the terminal of the right-angled portion of the same, however, being formed into single eye or loop 10, thereby only a single fastening is required for securing the device in position.
It will be noted from the foregoing, that a very simple, inexpensive and effective door step is ro -vi: ll, which is also curable and not lialile to casual disarrsngement by the action of the door thereon, aside from the advantages incident thereto, as above stated.
I claim:
A device of the character described, comprising a spring member and a plug applied to said sprin member, said spring member having a right-angled or lateral extension, said extension itself having a right-angled portion provided with. fastening receiving means.
In testimony whereof have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN W. MORAN.
Witnesses:
WM. S. SWAN,J1., FRANK HANLoN.
