WILLIAM J. ARRINGTON, OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, GEORGIA.
Lette/rs Patient No. 92,143, datetlJuZy 6, 1869. i
IMPROVEMENT .IN PLoWs.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. ARRINGTON, of Jefferson county, Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specitication, in which- Figure l represents a sideA elevation thereof.
Figure 2, sweep-side guide, the same being a modification of landside.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
One of the improvements consists in making the landside or bar of the plow with a bevel or flange, and of such shape and dimensions as admits through it, of the application of any turning plowshare,:n1d especially when the universal plow-stock,below described, is used.
Viewed from its straight orlandside aspect, the landside presents the general appearance of a triangle, with its hypothennse or long edge next the ground, when in position for use, w'hichedgemay be either straighty in its entire length, asin case where the plow'- share is to be heavily pointed, :is represented in red line, tig. 1, or only so foi-,six or seven inches of its liindniost part, and then curved upward towardsthe share-edge, when the point of the .plow-share to be used is intended to be only of the thickness of its other parts.
This ground edge is, in all instances, slightly bevelled or expanded to the right or mould-board side, to give a greater guiding and more durable surface.
'lhe hindiuost edge inclines suddenly downward for a short distance, and then runs (making width of heelpart) nearly' parallel with ground line.
The anterior line or edge, where plowshare applies, is curved, 1ro above'downward, at any desired angle, and has, on its right or mould-board side, a semi-oval bevel or flange, A, which flange takes the same angle downward and to the right with the landside proper.
Viewed from its anterior aspect, this bevel o r flange commences at the highest or truncated top ofthe bar i or landside, isfrom four (4) to tive and a half` (5%)A inches iu length, two or two and a half inches in width, and comes nearly to a feather-edge on its right border. lt isslightly curved on its under or standard side, is perforated by one or more holes, h, from b'efore backward, through which pass the bolt or bolts b, lsecuring at once the plowshare, laudside, (by means of its tlauge,) and standard, trinly togeher.
Ihe landside is also peitbrated, near its upper part, by a counter-sunk hole, '15, through which passes' the bolt, at once bindingtogether the laudside, standard, and brace. I
The advantages claimed for this anged landside,
are
First, its cheapness.
Second, its adaptability to all turning mould-boards, to which it gives the desired turning-angle.
Third, its easyapplicatiou to a universal stock, and to which (when ythe landside is removed) any other than turning plowshares may be applied.
The plow-stock, to which this landsidc is adapted and peculiarly applicable, is composed of wooden beam, handles, and round, of ordinary structure, inthe main, a slotted and curved wrought-iron standard, S, and astraight iron rear-brace, O. l
The standard is made of proper-sized bar-iron, bent on itself, with a slot from its beam to share-end, and
grasps, by its upper end, the beam at nearly right angles; is perforated laterally by (3) three holes, the upper one securing, by bolt, the beam and standard together, the nextlower one securing the bolt that binds together the landside, standard, and brace.'
llhe lower one is used only when the sweep-side guide, tig. 2, D, (a modification of the series of land sides,) is applied, whilst the sweep, or similar plow, is being used.
lhe brace C is fastened, (being a straightbar,) at its lower end, in the slot of the standard S, by the Vsame bolt B that passes transversely through landside, standard, and brace, ranges upward and backward between the handles to a mortise in rear end of the beam, where it, the hai1dles, and beam, are held iii-n1- ly together by bolt t.. It is perforated, ljust after leaving the standard, by a hole, throughwhich passes a bolt, k, securing it and lower end ot' handles'together.
It will be seen, that a discovery has been made iu .this stock, by such combination and'method of' attachment of its parts, as to give greater strength and durability than heretofore known in any stock of same material, and that the brace in angle of direction and mode ot' attachment to both standard and beam, is
novel, Vand that the peculiar curvature of the standard is such as at once to make it universal and applicable to the ilanged landside.
Having thus fully described my invention, f 4
. constructed substantially as and for the purposes here;
inbetore described.
