Be it knownthat I, HENRY HALLEOK BUR- TON, a citizenof the United States, and a resident of Los- Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Adding Attachment for Type-Writers, 0t which the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptiony This invention relates to certain improve merits i-n-adding attachmentsfor typewriters, and'more particularly to thattype of attachment disc osed in 883,081, grantedMarchM', 1908. The obiject of my invention is to improve referred to, whilenraintaining substantially the same general arrangement of parts and .method of operation.

The typewriter which I have illustrated as being provided with my improved adding attachment, is'substantially the same as that shown in my prior patent above referred to.
This typewriter includes a main frame 1, a
roller 2, a carriage 3, a plurality-of key-bars 4, and keys 5. Within the frame of the typewriter, there is mounted the mainframe 6 of my improved device, and movable within said main frame 6, is a casing 7 carrying the numeral wheels and the operating mechanism therefoiz' The frame 6- constitutes a guide and support for the casing 7, and
mechanism is provided whereby the casing moves longitudinally of the frame simultane: ously with the movement of the carriage.
' Within the frame of the typewriter and beneath the casing of the adding device, (see Figs. 1 and 2) there is mounted a rock shaft 8, substantially thesame as that disclosed in my previous patent. Extending outwardly from this rock shaft, there are rovided a plurality of arins 9, each of which is connected at its front end to one of the key-bars.

J For preventing the rotation -of the wheels 23 in the reverse direction during the raising of the arms corresponding thereto,-I provide a plurality of dogs 39, pivoted to a transverse rod 40 mounted in the casing'7. This rod preferably also serves to support one end of each of the springs 28, which hold the rods 28 in one of their limiting positions In connection with the mechanism above described, I employ zero-setting mechanism substantially thesameas that illustrated in my previous patent, save that the shaft 45 in'stead of being mounted above the wheels 1 30 shaft are mounted the pinions46, which upon the longitudinal movement of the shaft, may

In an addmg machine, a shaft, a wheel mounted thereon, an arm pivoted to the wheel ad acent the shaft and having a pawl for engagement with said wheel to rotate .cluding a plurality of the latter when said arm is moved in one di rection, a second shaft adjacent the periphcry of said wheel and having a collar there-on, an arm carried, by said collar and adapted to engage with said wheel to lock the latter against rotation, and a second arm carried by said shaft andadapted to engage with said first mentioned pivoted arm, whereby the latter when in one position, holds said locking arm in operative position.
11. An adding machine, comprising a plurahty of wheels, each having a row of later- 4 ally-extending teeth, means for rotating each of said wheels a definite distance upon the movement of an adjacent wheel through a distance ten times as great, said means inpivoted rods having engagementwith said lateralIy-eXtending teeth, means for normally locking said wheels against rotation, and means including an arm extending into the path of said laterally-extending teeth for intermittently unlockin each of said Wheels to permit its rotation y said pivoted rod.
12. An adding machine, including a plurality of wheels, a lever arm adjacent each of said wheels and adapted to'rot-ate the same, a shaft adjacent said plurality of collars thereon, a locking arm carried by-each of said collars for engagement with the corresponding wheel to hold the latter against rotation, an arm carried by each of said collars for engagement with the corresponding lever arm to unlock the wheel upon the movement of said lever arm, and a second lever arm carried by'each of saidoollars and adapted to engage with an adjacent wheel to nnlock -its corresponding wheel intermittently during the rotation of said adjacent Wheel.
13. In an adding machine, a plurality of wheels and having a' j rality of wheels, a lever wheels, each having a row of laterally-extending teeth and a row of radially-extending teeth, means adapted to beintermittently operated by 7 teeth for rotating the next adjacent wheel, and a plurality of oscillatory collars adja cent said wheels and each having an arm for engagement with the radially-extending teeth of its corresponding wheel, to lock said wheel, and having an arm extending into engagement with the laterally-extending teeth of an adjacent wheel to be operated by the latter for intermittently unlocking its corresponding wheel.

An adding machine, comprising a pluarm adjacent each wheel and adapted to engage with its corresponding wheel for rotating the latter, all of said wheels together with their corresponding arms being movable axially of the wheels, each of said leverarms terminating in a roller, and a lever mounted on a stationary pivot and terminatingin a yoke adapted to engage with said r0 lers in succession when said wheels are moved axially.
