This also is the arrangement of the depart ment of the machine shown in the Hopkins Patent Number 1,039,130 and a siniilar'arrangement is employed in the Dalton7 adding machine as it is `how onv the market and known coi'nmercially. The series of pins l6 are thus brought into operative position with respect to the hammers 8, each step oit the carriagetransporting another row or series of'pins over said hammers. An escapcment bar 10 extends across the key levers Q and controls the operation of the shaft 7 and the other? parts connected there-y mechanism 17 effectively to cause said mechanism to add the numbers recorded. Record of the various items is made by use of type 18- on the type carriers 15 driven by ham-l mers 19. The mechanism thus described is the same as that described in the aforesaid British patent, and in the Patent Number 1,039,130, and contained in the Dalton adding machine. lt will be noted that the mechanism so far described does not include any device whereby the operator will be informed as to the value of any number represented in the carriage, or whether any number at all is represented therein..

Key mechanism, commonly known as error key mechanism,7 or correction key mechanism. by which the pin carriage may be returned to idle'position without opera.-
tion of the adding or recording mechanisms, is also contained in these machines. Said mechanismcomprises a stem and key pivoted to one arm of a bell-crank lever 33 supported at 34, and a link 35 connecting the other arm of the lever with an arm attached to the rock shaft 24 (see Fig. 12). From the foregoing it is obvious that depression of thekey 52 will operate Vthe link effectively to restore 'the pin carriage to its initial or starting position and clear i or dissipate any number' set up in said carriage. A spring-actuated latch 3T is held out of engagement with the key when. the shaft A is idle, by a link leading to ay cam on said shaft. )Vixen the shaft is rocked the latch engages with the key ,39. and
prevents operation of said key while said p shaft, and the adding and recording mechanism, or either of them, are operating.
The above described error key or correo` tion key mechanism is substantially the same as that contained in the said British patent, said application Serial Number 140,300, and the said Dalton 7 machine. y1`his meehanism, it will be noted', is operable to move `the carriage to idle position, at a single operation, from whatever position said carriage may occupy. Frequentlyvit is desirable to move. the carriage only one ,ormore steps toward idlel position, todissipate or eliminate a like number of digits from the number set up or represented in the carriage. For this purpose I have equipped the machine with a back space key mechanism to move the carriage step by step toward idlel position to remove or l'eliminate one or more igures from the number in said `carriage, as desired. Said mechanism comprises a key, 39 pivoted to a bell-crank lever 40, from which a link 41 leads to a lever 42 near the rear of the machine (Figs. 1Q, 13 and 14). The lever 42 lhas pin-and-slot pivot connection with an arm 43 attached to a vertical rock shaft 44 on the upper end of which is an arm 45 carrying a pawl or dog 46 adapted to engage with the escapement segment 1l when the key 39 is depressed and move the escapement and thereby the pin carriage one step toward idle position. An abutment 47 prevents turning of the pawl or dog, and a. spring 4S holds said .pawl or dog in proper adjustment.. The latch 37 is also operative to engage with projections 49 on the key 39 and lock said key against operation when the adding and recording mechanism are in operation.
The present invention, comprising a visible item register, is embodied in and combined with the mechanism above described.
In the key-board plate above the series of keys an elongated opening 50 is formed. rIwo rails are supported below the keyboard plate and the item register or indicator carriage on said rails.` Said carriage comprises a plate 52 and two end pieces 523, and rollers 54 supporting the carriage on the rails. ik shaft 55 is supported yby the end plates 53, and the register or'indieator devices are mounted on said shaft. Said register or indicator devices are arranged in pairs, each device being substantially in the form of, thersegment of a disk, having on its peripheral edge ar flange 50. ln each pair of segments the flange of one segment operates within the flange of the other, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. One of said flanges in each pair of registering segments has engraved thereon the figures or digits from l to 5, inclusive, and the other tlange of each pair has engraved thereon the remaining figures er dig' 0 to 9, inclusive, and 0,7 so that. the ten figures are represented in each pair of registerinlT devices. in registering the digits 1 i Q 3 4 .arrying `such figures or digits will be actushaft 5S, is connected to'said link, so that when said rock shaft is operated, the item register' carriage will be correspondingly moved. This difference in, the motion imparted to the shaft by operation et the digits keys is maintained by all of the digits-keys .vhich atleet 4said shaft so that the 5 l key will rock sa/id shaft only a very slight distance, much than does the l key, for instance. rlhe levers for the (3 l, T d, and keysy are similarly arranged with respect to the rodl G7, and rock the shaft G3 dilierent distances conitorming to the value or the keys depressed. The shafts G2 and (323 transmit this mffion to the rt 4 tering segments in the item register carriage, and since no motion is' required to register the i O-27 in sight through the, open space 5G, the O key causes no motion ot the item .register device except lateral movement to the item register carriage which is transmitted thereto from the lateral n'iovement of the pin carriage 1l.

Each registering segment has anarcuate rack 81.011 its lower edge, said racks being in a plane just above the racks 77. The -arrangement is such that the racks 81 on these registering devices containing the digits l l to 5 inclusive are moved successively and. positioned immediately over that rack 77 which is onthe bar or link 7l which, as previously described, is actuated by the keys l to l inclusive. Similarly, the racks 8l on the registering devices containing the digits G to 9 inclusive (and the l O character) are moved and positioned successively over rack 77 which is carried by the bar or link which,.as previously described, is operated by the keys G. to 9 inclusive. When any digit key is depressed and its bar or link 71 or 75 is moved forwardly the pawl 78 by engagement witlrtlie si-ipporting rod Z3/raises the rack 77 until it .mesheswith-the rack 71 immediately thereover. An, abutment S2is on each link or bar 7l and 75 I(Figs. 5 and 10) and is brought against the rear end of the rack 77 by the Jforward movement of" the link or bar il and 75 when said links or bars are so operated. At the time of said engagement of the abutment 82 with the rack 77 the pawl 78 is above the supporting rod 73 so that the rack 77 now in mesh with its proper rack 8l will be moved forwardly a distance correspoiiding to the value of the key depressed and will transmit proper motion to the registering segment in the item register carriage. This motion is sutlicient to position the digit on the registering device so operated in view through the open space lhen the keys are released the shafts T2 and 73 are returned to idle position by their springs T8 which also return Athe links or bars 'Tl andT to the racks 77 carried thereby. lt will be observed that the racks T7 during their backward movement do not operate the registering devices, but are lowered by gravity to their idle positions disengaged from such registering devices.
The registering segments have arcuate slots S3 and the side plates 53 ofthe item said teeth to latch said segments in register' .mg posit-ion at the proper time.- rllhe first ope-ration of a key causes the pawl 85 at the lett to engage With and lock the proper registering segments, and releases the next one et the paivls 85 by moving it past an oblique shoulder S9 on the plate or bar` 86. A spring` 91 actuates the paivls S5 so as to engage them with the teeth of the registering segments when lsaid paWls are released' from the bar 8G by movement of the item register carriage, as above described. v It will be noted that the last or lett hand paivl S5 does not pass lunder the plate or bar S6, but remains in the position shown in Fig. 6, said paivl having been released from its registering seginent'by the movement ot the plate 92 caused by the previously returned paivl. u
A series of arms 9T are attached to the shafts G2 and G3 and extend alongside ot the levers 2. Abutinents 9S are on the levers 2 and receive the impact of the arms 97, and thereby prevent excess movement or rotation ot the said shafts 62 and 63 so as to assure correct operation ot -thze registering segments. n

YVhenever the pin carriage et is returned to its idle position Without. adding or recording any number tnat. may have been set up or represented therein by operation of the correction mechanism or the back space mechanism, it is plain that the item register carriage will also be moved toivai'd idle position to clear therefrom one or more of l the digits, ortho entire number, as desired, depending on whether the correction key or the back space key be operated. Thisitem register mechanism and the pin carriages in which the numbers are set up or represented preliminarily to adding or recording them, are connected sotliat their operation is uniform throughout. rEhe top plate 52 is preferably prorided with a series of openings or holes 9G through which the registering seg- -inents and the numeral or digits thereon ivill be visible as shown in Figs. 3 and 5.

In an adding machine, a carriage, escapement mechanism for moving said carriage, and keys operable to set up or vrepresent numbers in said carriage and to cause said escapement to operate, in combination With anitem registering carriage controlled by said escapement mechanism, and a registering device in said last-named carriage indicating the numbers as they are set up or represented in said first-named carriage substantially asV described.
3. In,an adding machine, a series of keys, a carriage, and registering devices in said carriage effecting a visual registration of the numbers represented by the keys operated, in combination with another carriage controlling said first-named carriage and a platen for holding paper to receive records of said numbers, substantially as specified.
4. In an adding machine, a series of numeral. keys, a carriage, a second carriage controlling said first-named carriage, mechanism for moving said carriages when said numeral keys are operated, mechanism in said first-named carriage indicating visually the numbers represented by the keys operated, mechanism i for recording said numbers after said lcarriages have been moved, and mechanism for restoring said carriage and the registering devices to idle position afteroperation, substantially as described.'

In an adding machine, a carriage, a second carriage controlling said first-named carriage, keys, registering devices in one of said carriages, and connections vvliereby said keys will operate said registering devices effectively to produce a visible registration of numbers represented by the keys operated, in combinationV with mechanism for recording said numbers respectively, after said numbers have been registered, substantially as specified.

In an adding machine, a carriage, a second carriage controlled by said irst" named carriage, keys, registering devices in said'second carriage, connections whereby said keys Will operate said registering devices effectively to produce a visible registration of the numbers represented by the keys operated, and mechanism controlled by said keys for moving said tivo carriages, in combination with mechanism for recording numbers registered in said carriage after said carriages have been moved, .substantially as specified.

In an adding machine, a carriage, a second carriage controlled by said firstnamed carriage, registering devices in said second carriage, numeral keys operable to set up numbers in saidifirst-named carriage, and devices under control of a plurality of said keys whereby one key may be caused to operate any desired number of said registering devices effectively to produce a visible registration ot the number represented by the keys operated, and means for restoring saidV registering devices to idle position, substantially as described.

In an adding machine, a carriage, a second carriage controlled by said firstnamed carriage, registering devices in said second carriage, keys, connections whereby said keys may be caused to operate said registering devices effectively, to produce visible registration of the numbers represented by the keys operated, and mechanism controlled by said keys for moving said carriages laterally and mechanism for adding said numbers after s aid carriages have been moved, substantially as described.

In an adding machine, a movable carriage, means for setting up numbers in said carriage, mechanism. for moving said carriage laterally, a second carriage movable in unison with said first-named carriage, registering devices in said second-named carriage, and devices for adjusting said registering devices efectively to indicate visually the numbers set up in'said first-named carriage, substantially as specified. l
