Be it known that l, Romani* B. VAN D'rnn, a citizen of thc United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Feeding Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for feeding envelops and like articles one at a time from a pile contained in a holder; and an object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which will be simple in construction, comparatively cheap in manufacture and most efficient in operation.
In the drawings illustrating` the principle of my invention and the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, Figure l is a perspective view of the device; Ai1`ig. 2 is a central vertical section showing the position of the feeding mechanism just after an envelop has been fed; Fig. 3 is a section of the feeding mechanism on an enlarged scale and showing the feeding mechanism before it has been actuated to feed an envelop; Fig. 4 is a section on the line A-A of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a detail in section showing the feed-plate in plan.
The base o supports a shell or casing the upper part Z) of which constitutes a holder for' the pile of envelops o and the lower part d of which serves as a housing for the feed mechanism. The top of the holder b is closed by the cover e which is provided With a suitable bail f.
The bottoni of the holder b is closed by the partition-plate g which separates the holder from the chamber /z in which is mounted the driving mechanism. Upon the partition plate g is slidably mounted a feedplate z' which is provided with a series of transverse toothed or serrated feed-bars and the edges of which lie under the guidebars 1 (Figs. 4 and 5).
From thepartition-plate g project downwardly two hanger-bars m in which is mounted the rock-shaft n one end of which eX- tends outside of the casing or housing d and is there provided with a rocker-arm o. From the partition-plate g also depend twohangcrbars 7) in which is slidably supported a plunger-rod y to one end of which is fastened one cud of a coil-spring r the other end of which is fastened to the adjacent hanger-bar D (Figs. 2 and 3). The partition-plate g is formed with a central opening s through which projects the connectionplate t one end of which is fastened to the feed-plate 'z' at the bottom thereof and the other end of which is attached to the plunger-rod g. Upon the feed-shaft or rockershaft n is mounted immediately below the central opening s a feed-arm u the upper part of which is bifurcated. The feed-arm u straddles the plunger-rod g and its upper end lies in rear of the connection-plate t.
The' serrated feed-bars j have an upward and forward inclination from the feed-plate and upon their toothed edges lies the lowerniost envelop c of the pile. When the crankarm o is thrown to the position shown in Fig. l and by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the feed-arm u presses against the connectionplate t and forces the plunger-rod Q and feed-plate z' to the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby carrying the lowermost envelop outwardly through the slit o in the bottom of the wall of the holder b and stretching the coil-spring r. The latter restores the parts to their original or normal position, when the pressure on the crank-arm o is removed, leaving the fed envelop projectin through the slit o ready to be gripped an pulled out by hand.
I claim:
A mechanism of the character described, consisting of the combination of a casing; a partition-plate formed with` an aperture and mounted in said casinv; a feed-plate formed with a frictional sur ace and mounted slidably upon said partition-plate, said feed-plate being provided with a connection-plate which extends downwardly through said aperture; a sprin -controlled plunger-rod mounted free to side within said casing below said partition-plate and attached to said connection-plate; a rock-shaft rotatably mounted in said casing; and a rocker-win meuh-ted `011 said `ralnek-shaft :1I-1d my hahd Aan; Seid Anderson this Qrdkday of adapted to be pressed against said connec- April, 1908, in the presence of the two un- 'tion-plate by the turning 0f said" rock-Shaft, dersigned Witnesses.
