To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN S. MINION, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kennels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of thisspecifioation.

This invention relates to a kennel, coop, and similar structures, and is designed to rovide a housing for animals, fowl, and the ike, which housing has a top portion in hinged relation to the lower portion of the structure, the hinging elements being also detachable.

A further object of the invention is to provide a structure of this kind that allows the hinged portion to be tilted, and having means for automatically supporting the hinged portion in its tilted position. This construction provides a means for airing the structure, exposing the interior to sunlight, and making a sanitary housing for animals and the like, the structure being particularly adapted for a kennel for dogs. v

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which F gure 1 1s a perspective of the device with the top portion tilted back to allow the bottom portion to be cleaned and aired. Fig. 2 is a back view of'the structure, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section through Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view of a hinge.

The structure consists of a lower portion 10 having substantially perpendicular sides and having an opening as 11 in the case of a kennel, and being preferably provided with the strips 12 shown in Fig. 2, whereby the bottom of the lower ortion 10 is slightly raised from the ground tion of air beneath the same. The upper portion 13 registers with the lower portion 10, the sides of the upper portion resting on the sides of the lower portion, the upper portion being preferably provided with the overlapping strips 14 on the outside of the kennel, although these may be secured on the inside, these stri s providing a means for shedding water an also making a tight joint so as'toinsure the warmth of the structure in cold weather. ing 11 in the bottom portion and thus forms an entrance to the structure. The upper portion is provided with the usual top or roof 16. The hinge is shown in Fig. 4 and is shown in place in Fig. 2. I prefer to place, on the back end of each side of the lower portion 10, a plate 32 having a portion projecting from the rear of each side, the projecting portions being provided with slots or grooves 33. On the under side of the strip of the top portion 13 I securea plate 34 which is provided with a stud 35, these plates being arranged so as to bring the studs in register with the slots 33 when the upper portion 13 is set down in the lower portion 10. 32 and 34 are preferably attached by means of screws passing through perforations in the plates.

When the parts are assembled as sh own in Fig. 2, the upper portion 13 is in hinged relation to the lower portion 10, and the upper portion can be tilted back as shown in Fig. 1 so as to permit the cleaning of the lower portion 10, and also allow sunlight to )enetrate therein over its Whole surface, whic makes a sanitary structure due to this easy cleaning. On the back of the upper portion 13 is a hinge 23 from which is pivotally suspended, by being attached thereto on one end, an arm 24 which is adapted to have its other free end engage the ground when the up er portion is tilted, the arm 2 1 falling natura 1y into place when the tilting occurs, and acting to support the top portion in its tilted position.

The link 25 has slots 29 to permit the link to be in stalled quickly and conveniently, the slots being preferably faced outward so as to prevent the accidental withdrawal of the link without slightly tilting the top. portion, When the to portion is slightly tilted, as shown in dottec outline in Fig. 3, the weight of the link 25 is against the back of the slots, and the link is not apt to be disengaged unless by design. The upper edge 30 of the arm 24 is preferably cut at an angle so as to fully receive the back of the upper portion 18, when this upper portion is tilted back to its farthest point, so that the supporting of the top portion is taken from the hinge 2-3, and the back rests directly on the surface 30.

In the case of a dog kennel, I place a band arm 24, when the to portion 13 is tilted and of metal, referably iron, as at 31 in Fig. 3, whereby t e wear of the chain, by which the dog is attached to the house, which wear comes on the edges of the entrance as the animal passes in and out, is taken up.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A kennel comprising a bottom portion having vertical sides, a top portion with vertical sides resting on the sides of the bottom portion, hinges connecting the sides of the ottom and top portions on one end, an arm swinging from its top end on the hinged end of the top portion, and a link pivoted to the bottom portion and to the arm near its i hinged end, the link having slots near its ends for its pivotal installation.

2. A kennel comprising a lower portion having a bottom and vertical sides, an upper portion with sides resting on the sides of the lower portion and having a top thereon, plates projecting from one end of parallel sides of the lower portion, the plates having slots on their top edges, and plates secured to the upper portion and having studs thereon adapted to lie in the slots of the first 1nentioned plates and support the upper portion when it is tilted, and permitting the verti -ul separation of the portions, either when upright or tilted.
