BARREL-TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent. A Application filed July 14, 1908. Serial No. 443,500.
`V.Patented May 4, '1.909.
. This invention relates todevices for transporting barrels, kegs, boxes, and similar articles from place to place, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the eiiiciency and utility oi' devices of this character. l
With these and other objects in view the vinvention consists in a truck structure comprrising an axle and alaterally extending ame, a pair of grip elements swinging upon the truck structure and adapted to engage the lower end of the barrel or other article to f be transported, and the frame scarrying a rest to support the upper end of the barrel or other article, andwith meansfor locking 'the grip elements in position upon the truck rame.
The invention further consists incertain novel features of construction as vhereafter shown and zdescribed and pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative ofthe preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the im roved device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofp the improved device. plan view. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the improved device with the bearing wheels ,l removed.
Iiosed in position to receive The improved'device comprises an axle 10 having ground wheels 11`12 mounted for rotation upon the ends and'fwith a bolster 4member 13 swinging upon the axle by a pin 14, the bolster also having a flange 15 bearin from the axle at the front and rear.
4xtending upwardly from the axle 10 is a framey comprising a central member' 16 and branching members 17-18, the outer end of the member 16 being provided with a notched segment-19.
Projectin from the member 16 is a rest 20 adaptedtoear against the upper portion of a barrel indicatedat 21 when the truck is disthe barrel as ereafter explained.
Pivoted at 22-23 to the bolster'lS are two ower ends.
then specifically Fig. 3 is a lever members 24e-25 extended at their upper ends into handles 26-27 and with gripping 'aws 28-29 extending laterally from their i ltwill thus be obvious that by distending the yhandle ends 26,*27 of the levers the gripping members 28--29 will be compressed against the barrel or other article around which they are dis o'sed, so that if the truck structure be move into position with the grip members 28`29 inclas ing the bar-l rel 21 from opposite sides an the handle members 26-27 be distended the barrel will be firmly gripped and when the leve'i"mem-` bers 24-25 are moved into a substantiall horizontal osition the barrel will be lifted from theA oor with its upper end bearing against the rest 20, the barrel then bein in the position to be transported any required distance.
The lever members 24-25 are provided with pawl devices 30-31 engaging the notches of the segment 19 and thus holdin the lever members 24-25 in their adjuste position and retaining the grip upon the arrel or other article, thus the same action which distende the levers by manipulating.
the handles 26-27 likewise causes t awls 30-31 to lock the levers in position an thus retain the grip upon the barrel.
` When the barrel is to be released, the truck structure is tilted into a vertical position which likewise disposes the barrel in a vertical position and t en by releasing the pawls 30-31 the barrel is released and the truck removed.
The device issim lein construction, can be manufactured ofp any required material and of any required size to adapt it to barrels of different sizes, kegs, half-barrels, boxes,
.and the like.
While the drawings show the preferred embodiment of the invention, it' will be understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto as 'changes may be made in the construction within the scope of the a pended claims without departing from t e principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Whatis claimed, is
1. In a device of the class described, a truck frame supportedA u on ground wheels, lever members swinging irom said frame and with grip elements extending laterally from one end, a rest extending from saidv truck frame intermediate its ends and adapted to bear against the article held between said ever arms relative to said frame.
2. In a device of the class described, a truck frame comprising an axle, ground wheels carried by said axle, a supporting frame extending from said axle, a rest extending from said sup orting frame, a bolster' swinging upon said ax e, lever arms swinging upon said bolster,- grip elements extending laterally from said levers, and means for locking said lever arms relative to said frame.
3. In a' device of the class described, a truck frame comprising an axle, ground wheels carried by said axle,. a supporting frame extending from said axle, a 'nhs-t exrip elements, and means for locking said tending from said supporting frame, a bolster Swinging upon said axle, lever arms swinging upon said bolster, grip elements extending laterally from said levers, a notched segment carried by said frame, and spring actuated pawls carried by said levers and engaging the notches of said segments, whereby the levers are locked in position. v
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
