CABBAGE-CORE SHREDDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that l, HARRY D. Wrrsox, a citizen of the United States, residing at! ments in machines for shredding the cores of cabbages and the like, the object being the production of a machine which shall be simple in construction, comprised of few parts and light in weight which shall occupy a small area of floor space, have a safety guard for the knife and be provided with simple means for reversing the rotary movement of the knife; and which, finally, shall be constructed so that it can readily be detachably secured to a post or other support, thus allowing it to be transferred from one position to another adjacent the bins containing the cabbages to be out.
ith these main ends in view my invention consists in certain novelties of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The accompanying drawing illustrates an example of the physical embodiment of the invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principle.
Figure 1 is a face view in elevation show- 1 ing the entire machine. Fig. 2 is an edge view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view of shaft 11 and bevel wheel 16.
Referring to the figures, the numeral 1 designates the cast frame having arms 2, 2 provided with bearings 3, 3, for a spindle,
earings 4, 4, for a shaft, four slotted openings 5, 5, through the frame, and a perforated lug 6 upon one of the arms.
In the bearings 4, 4, is a rotary shaft 7 upon which at one end are the tight and loose pulleys 8 and 9 and at the other end a fixed beveled wheel 10 preferably composed of suitable fibrous material.
Journaled in the bearings 3, 3, is a vertical spindle 11 having atits lower end an enlarged portion within which is a socket 12, at the top end a set collar 13, and below the top bearing 3 a slot 14 to receive a key.
Upon the spindle is a cored sleeve 15 having a bevel wheel 16 at each end, each of which wheels is adapted to alternately and frictionally engage the main friction bevel wheel as the sleeve is shifted longitudinally path of the rotary knife.

' The numeral 18 designates a foot lever pivoted to a post 19 by a bolt 20 located near the lower end of the post 21, a lever pivoted by a bolt to the lug 6 on the lower arm of the casting; 22, the fork at the short end of the lever; 23, an annular groove at the lower end of the sleeve within which are loosely seated the lugs 24- at the ends of the fork of the lever; 25, a chain connecting the foot lever and lever 21, as shown, the chain being of proper length to allow the foot lever to be located near the floor or ground; 26,
the shank carrying the knife, which shank is detachably secured at its upper end in the socket 12 by a set screw 27, the slitting knife 28, a swinging arm pivoted to the post by a bolt'29 at the extreme end 80, a circular guard surrounding the knife when arm is in its lowest position 31, a guide for the arm, which guide is secured by screws to the post in such a position as will prevent side motion of the arm and likewise limit its vertical movements; 32, four bolts or screws threaded at their projecting ends to receive butterfly nuts 33, which when tightened rigidly hold the main casting to the post or other suitable support; and 3 1 is a cabbage motion to the tight pulley and friction wheels, the machine is used as follows: A cabbage is held by the hands in the position illustrated and then raised so as to lift the guide and bring the cabbage core into the ding is completed the foot lever is pressed down and the sleeve raised bringing the lower bevel wheel into frictional contact with the bevel wheel on the main shaft and at the same time throwing the top bevel 1 wheel out of gear. This action reverses the rotation of the knife whereupon the cabbage is lowered and the guard drops by gravity to its original position. The weight of the sleeve and bevel wheels brings the top bevel 11 wheel into gear again when the foot is removed from the lever.
When the shred- When it is desired to move the machine main shaft, and arms with bearings; a main to another location ad acent another cm the 1 foot lever and guard arm are detached, the nuts 33 turned so that the wings are in vertical positions, and the frame then lifted off the bolts, which latter with the nuts may be left in place for the reception of the frame when it is again to be used in the same location.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing it becomes obvious that I have produced a machine for the purpose specified which fulfils all the conditions set forth at the end of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. The combination in a shredding machine having a frame provided with perforated arms for receiving a spindle, bearings for a main shaft and means for detachably supporting the frame in a vertical plane; of a main shaft with a bevel wheel; a spindl journaled in the arms; a sleeve, carrying two bevel wheels, located upon the spindle and movable longitudinal thereof; and means for shifting the sleeve and bevel wheels on the spindle.
2. The combination in a shredding machine provided with a frame having bearings for a spindle, and bearings for a main shaft; of a main shaft carrying a bevel wheel; a spindle journaled in the hearings on the frame; a sleeve, carrying two bevel wheels, located upon the spindle and longitudinally movable only relative to the spindle; means for securing the frame to a post or other support and in a substantially vertical plane so that the weight of the sleeve and wheels will cause the top bevel wheel to frictionally engage the bevel wheel on the main shaft; and means for raising the sleeve so as to throw the top wheel out of gear and the lower wheel into gear.
3. A shredding machine comprising a frame having bearings for a main shaft, and arms with bearings for a spindle; a main shaft with a bevel wheel; a spindle; a longitudinally movable sleeve upon the spindle; bevel wheels at opposite ends of the sleeve; a shifting lever pivoted to the frame and engaging the sleeve; a foot lever; and means connecting the shifting lever and foot lever; the said frame being disposed in a vertical plane and detachably secured to a post or other support.
4. The combination with a post or support having projecting headed bolts or nuts, of a shredding machine frame provided with slotted openings therethrough, bearings for a shaft and bevel wheel a spindle; a longitudinally movable sleeve carrying bevel wheels located upon the spindle; means for shifting the sleeve; a shank and knife in connection with the spindle; and a vertically swinging arm having a guard which latter when the arm is in its lowered position surrounds the knife.
5. The combination with a shredding machine having suitable gearing and a rotary spindle carrying a knife, of a swinging arm supporting a guard which surrounds the knife.
6. The combination with a shredding machine having suitable gearing and a vertically disposed rotary spindle carrying a knife, of a pivoted swinging arm supporting a guard which when in its lowest position surrounds the knife.
7. The coniibination in a shredding machine having a frame provided with perforations in line for receiving a spindle, and a bearing for a main shaft located at right angles to the perforations for the spindle, of a main shaft with a bevel wheel; a spindle having at one end means for detachably holding the shank of a cutter, said spindle being journaled in the said perforations a sleeve, carrying two bevel wheels, located upon the spindle and movable longitudinally thereof; means for transmitting motion from the spindle to the sleeve; and mealhs for shifting the sleeve and bevel wheels on the spindle.
8. The combination in a shredding machine having a frame provided with openings therethrough for attaching the said frame b bolts to a fixed support, a bearing for a main shaft, and bearings at right angles to the bearing for the main shaft for the reception of a spindle, of a main shaft and bevel wheel; a spindle located at right angles to the main shaft; a sleeve, carrying two bevel wheels, mounted upon the spindle and mov able longitudinally thereof; means for imparting motion from the spindle to the sleeve; and means for shifting the sleeve whereby the bevel wheels in connection with the sleeve may alternately be brought in contact with the bevel wheel on the main shaft.
