Lette/rs Patent No. 92,060, dated .Tune 29, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOVEL-EANDLE TOPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.:-
Be it known that we, S. M. KNAPP and JOSEPH SWITTER, of Massillon, in the county of Stark, in the State of Ollio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shovel-Handle Tops; and we do hereby'v declare that the following is'ajfull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, of wh'ich'drawings- Figure 1 is a front elevation of our improved handle-top. Y
Figure 2 is a side view of same.
. Figure 3 is front view of handle-top, with cross-bar removed.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section of handle-top.
Figures 5 and 6 are views of tips of handle-top and end of cross-bar.
Our invention consists in certain improvements in metallic tops `for shovel-handles, said improvements consisting in casting lips or lianges on the inside ofthe arms of the handle-tops, which iit into notches cut in the ends of cross-bar of the handle, and serve to prevent said cross-bar from rotating, as well as to take the strain caused by pressing on the cross-bar in shovelling from the screws, by which said bar is lsecured. between the arms of the handle-top, whereby we render much smaller .screws on connections between the crossbar and the arms ofthe handle-top available, and avoid the danger of splitting the cross-bar by a downward pressure onl the same, or the turning ot' vthe cross-bar in the handle-top while shovelling, thus materially increasing 'the ediciency and durability of the device, and lessening its cost and weight.
'lo enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe more fully its construction.
The handle-top is composed of the socket A, in which is secured the handle H, by means of screws or rivet G, and t-he arms B B, which terminate in the rounded tips n vin figs. 2 and 4.
The lips D D are arranged on thearms B-B, as shown, and the cross-bar G has the notches v7a k cut in .its end, in which the lips D D fit, the cross-bar G being secured between .the tips E E by screws F F, as shown The cross-bar structed, with respect to the tips E E and lips D D, as to leave a smooth surface on all parts of' the topas pfnlly shown, so that the top' is as easy-and pleasant for working as the ordinary wooden handle-tops, and is far less liable to split, as well as being more cheaply constructed. Y
.lhe whole top, consisting of socket A and arms B B, with rounded tips E and inner lips D, is cast in a single piece of common cast or malleable irn, in a manner readily seen.
y It is evident that no rotation of the cross-bar O can take'place in using this top, and that a light cross-bar will be amply strong to resist the downward pressure onit, as it is supported on the lips D, and hence it is not liable to split at the screws F F, as is the case where no lips are used.
Having thus fully ,described our invention,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,`is
The improved shoyel-handle top hereinV described,
v composed of the socket A, arms B E, B E, provided with lips D D, cross-bar C, with end-notches k k, and retaining-screws F F, or their equivalents, the several parts'being constructed, combined, and arranged, substantially as and i'or the purpose herein specilied.
As evidence that we claim the foregoingfwe have hereuntoset our hands, in presence of two witnesses, this 26th day of March, 1869.
Si M. KNAPP. JOSEPH SWITTER.
Witnesses T. H. SnAMAN, Isaac H. BROWN.
