Description

@dotted @Statua tuent @Wire Letters Patent N 91,994, lated Junc29, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVERSIBLE PARASVOLS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
'To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, J AMES WILLIAMS, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New-York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Parasols and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in parasols, designed to provide an arrangement ofthe arms which support the cover, and the braces whereby the cover when extended will represent, in form, a fiat disk, with a conical central part, also a reversible arrangement'of the said cover, arms, and braces, whereby the conical part may be made to project' upward or downward from the flat part.
Figure l represents a sectional elevation of my improvedV parasol, in an extended position;
Figure 2 represents the same, when folded with the central part ofthe cover downward; and
Figure 3 represents the same, when folded with the central part of the top upward, as in the parasols of common construction.
Similar' letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
rlhe expanding and contracting-frame, for support-- ing the cover, is made oi' strong, straight arms, or stretchers Ajointed to a runner, B, and braces C, which are jointed to slotted lugsD, on thc arms, and to a sleeve, or runner, E, on the stock F, which sleeve I prefer to arrange above the runner B, and near the top of theistock, for the purpose of forming the central conical elevation G ofthe cover, which is so connected to the arms beyond the connection of the braces thereto, as to he maintained in a fiat position to the ends ofthe arms;
In this position the frame is opened or closed, bysliding the runner B, to which the arms are connected, and the same may be elected by sliding it either up or down. It' shoved up, the-frame and cover will assume the position represented in fig. 3, and it' moved down, it will take the position represented in tig. 2.
To permit the braces to fold over the runner B,
and the inner. ends of the arms, when closed, by moving upward, I make the top notch, or ring to which the braces are connected, larger than the top of the runner B.
The slides, or runners B E, and the stock, are so arranged that they may be readily detached therefrom by first detaching the tapered tube H, which is employed as a cover for the spring-catch at the top, and to give a finished appearance to the stock, and which is'maintained thereon by the set-screw I.
The frame and its cover heilig thus detached from the stock, may be connected thereto by reversing the position, the runner E being placed below and the runner B' at the top.
This will provide a parasol wholly flat on the top, which may also be opened or closed in either' direc tion, by moving the rmmer either way.
l also propose to make the stock F detachable from the enlarged handle thereof, F', by making the latter tubular for a considerable distance from one end, and inserting the part F, and securing it by set-screws.
Having thus described my invention,
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l 1. The arms, or stretchers A, braces C, cover and runners B E, arranged for maintaining the parasol, when extended, inthe form ot' a dat disk, with a central conical projection, substantially as specilied.
2. The arrangement ot' the runners, braces, stretchers, and holding-springs, whereby the cover or top is made detachable ii'om the handle, for reversing the position thereof, substantially as and for the purpose Specified.
3. A parasol-frame, arranged for folding or Spreading the same .by a movement of the runner, carrying either the braces or arms in either direction on the stock, substantially as specified.
The above specilication ot' my invention signed by me, this 11th day of March, 1869.
. JAMES WILLIAMS.
Witnesses:
FRANK BLocKLEY, E. Gnnnxn COLLINS.
