IMPROVEMENT IN AXLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all persons to whom these presents may come.-
Be it known that I, HUBBARD W. TILTON, of Walpole, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention, Ihaving reference to Carriage-Wheel Axles, and the boxes thereof yand 1 do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the-accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a side. elevation;
Figure 2, a longitudinal section; and
Figure 3, a transverse section of a wheel-axle sleeve, a box and journal, as provided with my invention, the nature of which consists in the arrangement of a grease-cavity within one of the ears of the sleeve, so as to open into the box of the sleeve.
By arranging the grease-cavity in one of the ears of the sleeve, a deeper cavity can be obtained, or one capable of holding more grease than one madeiu the sleeve alone, in the usual way. The said cavity is intended to hold a quantity of tallow or grease, which will remain in a solid state while the journal may remain at a proper working-temperature; but which. in case of an increase of heat in the journal, arising from friction, and the absence of the necessary amount of lubricating, will melt and flow upon the journal and into the box, so as to lubricate it, and prevent the two from becoming set together.

The ears or projections for preventing the sleeve or box, when fixed in a wheel-hub, from revolving therein, are shown at O and D, one of them, viz., that marked G, being made somewhat wider than the other, and having formed within it and the slecve,-the greasecavity, or space a. This cavity opens into the interior chamber or bore of the box.
Furthermore, the wheel-cap is shown atE, and. the shoulder of the journal at- F, there being a washer, b or 0, applied to both cap and shoulder prior to the journal being inserted in the box. The cap should have a diameter to cause it to fit the inner surface of.
the rim of the rear recess of the wheel-hub, so as. to keep the lubricatiug-material as much as possible within the wheel, and also to protect the journal shoulder from dust or dirt.
I claim the arrangement of the groove-cavity 0, within one of the ears 0 or I) of the sleeve or journal- H. W. TILTON.
