THOMAS FALVEY, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-AXLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 61,821, dated February 5, 1867.
`To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS FALvEY, of
the city of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Metal Thimble-Skeins and Boxes for the Axles of Wagons, Carriages, and other Wheeled Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the skein, which is cast of any suitable metal, and hollow to receive the end of a wooden axle. Near the two ends of this skein, and cast upon it, is an irregular thread. This thread is seen as cast upon one end of the skein in Figure. 2 from .fr to az.
It is not necessary that the thread should be cast precisely as shown in the figure above referred to, as any thread which is irregularly cast upon the skein will answer my purpose.
D D represent collars, which are cast over the irregular thread, either of brass or any other metal which diiiers from the metal of which the skein is cast.
The object of the irregular thread is to prevent the collars from turning or twisting or being removed from the skein.
It will readily be perceived that when a brass or other metal collar is cast upon the irregular thread of the skein it will be imposible to remove it by any wear or tear incident to the uses of the skein.
B represents the box, which iits in the hub of the vehicle, and in which the skein with its collars is made to fit. Between the two col'- lars, on the ends of the skein, is a space, C, which serves as an oil chamber or reservoir. When the skein is inserted in the box B, oil is placed in the chamber or space C, and is there retained for lubricating the bearings which are upon the collars.
An annular groove or opening` is cast in the collar D', which serves to receive the inner end of the box B, and acts as a shoulder to prevent the box from slipping farther on the skein than is desirable.
E represents a nut, which is provided, as usual, with a female screw to pass over a male screw on the end of the skein, to prevent the box from coming off.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Gast-ing or forming an irregular thread upon the skein A, for the purpose of firmly securing and stationin g the collars D D', which are cast over said irregular thread, substantially as herein specied.
Y THOS. FALVEY.
