AXLE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,735, dated April 2, 1889.
Application filed October 6, 1888. Serial No. 287,433. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BLACK, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axlel3oxes for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in axle-boxes for vehicles, in which a detachable thimble is screwed into the inner end of the axle-box, so as to form a continuation of the box, the enlarged free end or head of the thimble protruding from the hub and fitting into an annular chamber in the outer face of the opposing axle-collar, to the end that dirt and dust are excluded from the box, and that such removable thimble, sustaining the endthrust and consequent wear, may be of other and better material for the purpose than the material of the box proper, and that thethimble may be adjusted to take .up lost end motion, and that a new thimble may at a trifling cost be supplied at any time to take the place of the old worn-out thimble.
lVith these objects in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the center of axle and box. Fig. 2 is aview in perspective of the thimble detached.
A represents the axle, having collars A, the latter on their outer faces having, respect ively, annular chambers or grooves a.
B is the axlebox, that, in the main, may be of ordinary construction. The ends of box B are supposed to be usually about flush with the end of the wheel-hub. The inner end of box B is counterbored at b, and the counterbore is preferably screw-threaded for engaging a corresponding reduced threaded section, 0, of thimble C. This thimble is bored to correspond with box B, and consequently fits the axle and constitutes a continuation of the box proper. The enlarged free end or head C of the thimble fits nicely into chamber a of quent friction and wear, had better be of brass or some softer metal than collar A, so that the latter will be Worn as little as possible, for the reason that collar A is not easily renewed, While thimble C may be renewed at a trifling cost. screwed a trifle to take up the lost end motion, and by means of shims or packing of paper, tin, or other suitable thin material between the end of boxB and shoulder c of the thimble, the latter maybe firmly held in place when screwed up against such packing. Prior to, attaching the box to the wheel-hub the thimble may be removed, so that the latter does not in the least interfere with setting the box.
hat I claim is- 1. The combination, with vehicle-axle and axle-box, the latter having a detachable thimble, substantially as indicated, of axle-collar having an annular chamber in the outer face thereof for receiving the end of such detachable collar, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with vehicle axle and collar, the latter havin an annular chamber in the outer face thereof, of axle-box having a detachable thimble screwed into the inner end of the box, such thimble having an enlarged head adapted to fit into the chamber of the axle-collar, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with vehicle axle and collar, the latter having an annular chamber in the outer face thereof concentric with the axis of the axle, of axle-box having an en larged end or head adapted to fit into such annular chamber, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specifica- The thimble may be untion,'in the presence of two witnesses, this 13th day of August, 1888.
WILLIAM F. BLACK.
