Description

inited ,gemist OTTO'SLIKER, oF L1NooLN,1LL1No1-s.
Lette/rs Patent N 91,978, dated June 29, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT 1N DOOR-HOLDER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part 4of the same..
To all whom 'it may concern'.-
B'e it known that I, OTTO SLIKER, of Lincoln, in
'the county of Logan, and` State of Illinois, have in-v vented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, suiiicient to enable others skilled in the art'to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specil'ication, and in which- Figure l is a perspective viewy oi'one form of my invention Figure 2 is a perspective view'of the same when attached for use;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the same; and
Figure 4 is a detached view ot part of Athe same.
Like figures of reference indicate like parts in 'the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in providinga. door-holding knob, which is to be fastened to 'the washboards with an expanding V-spring, which, when the door is opened to its full extent, catches in a socket in the door, and is again released when the door is to be closed, by the power exerted in doing so.
A, fig. 1 of the drawing, represents a shank, extending at one end into a screw, a, and at the other into 4two bent arms or expanding springs B B', which end in half-spherical projections C.
0n the spring B', near its projection C, is formed a ring or hand, l), in which a cushion, G, ot' any elastic'v or yielding material is secured, projecting beyond the ring D.
v E is a plate, provided wit-h a. hole, e, in its centre, of
a diameter less than the distance between the projections G from each other, and attached to the lower part of y the door, over a hole, or cavity, formed in the latter, of sutiicient size to admit the projections() of the springs.
In fig. 3 a modification of my device is shown. l is a knob provided at its smaller end with a screw, a, and having a recess, b, formed in its opposite end for the reception of a circular cushion, c, of yielding4 or elastic material.
The ends of the springs B are provided with pro'- jections-C, as described, and are held in place by a pin, d.
The operation of my device is` very simple, and easily understood.
The springs, iig. 1, boing attached to the washlioard and the plate E, over the cavity in the door, as
shown in tig. 2, when the latter is thrown open to its.,
full extent, for the purpose of retaining it, the hole e vflies over the projections C, the same `beingV rounded or semispherical, compressing them in that act, and the plate E striking against the cushion G, thus preventing a great noise and jar.
As soon as the `projections C have passed through hole c, they a-re allowed to again expand, and thus hold the door securely. Y
The device shown in iig. 3 acts in the same way, the cushion c preventing the noise and jar. The door is released by the mere force exerted in closing it.
Having thus described my invention,
What l claim as new, and desirev to secure by .Letters latent, is-
1. The expanding springs B B', when provided with convex or seniispherical projections C, in combination with plate E, providedwith hole c, as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. 1n combination with the above, the ring or band D and cushion G, as shown, and for the purpose described.
OTTO SLIKER. itnesses W. 1. RANDOLPH, JAMES M. lfos'rnn.
