To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, oHARLEs A. CONDE', ofrnda'n! This invention relates to new `and important im-V provements in governors for regulating the motion of steamengines; and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described.
The accompanying plate of drawings `represents a vertical section of a governor constructed according to my invention. I

A is the frame, or stand of the governor, on which all its working-parts rest.
B is an adjustable sleeve, through which the spindle of the revolving-head O, passes, and to which it is secured by a collar on the spindle, withintheupper part of the sleeve. The sleeve B is united with the stand Aby a screwconnection, as seen in the drawing, and acts as a support to the upper portion of the governor.
The sleeve is -raised and` lowered by means of the hand-wheel D, and thereby the cut-off valve and ow of steam is regulated. 1
E represents the valve-rod, which is connected with the cross of the governor-balls.
F F represent the balls.
G is the cross to which they are hung.
H H are levers which connect'the arms of the balls with the head C.
I is the spindle of the revolving-head.
J is the collar on the spindle,`whlich secures the head O to the sleeve B.
This spindle connects with the arbor of the mitregear K, by means of a feather and groove, so that it may be readily raised and lowered for regulating the valve without disturbing the driving-gears. The arrangement allows of changes in the speed of the engine without impairing the free action of the governor, j
or stopping the motion.
The raising or lowering of the valve in its chamber opens -or closes the steam-ports, or apertures, andthe speed of the engine is thereby controlled.
When the balls hang at their lowest point, the valve is raised and the steam is cutoif.
The connection between the valve-rod and the cross of the balls is rigid, so that' the least movement of the balls affects the valve.
When the balls expand, from the increased velocity ofthe engine, the action or speed ofthe valve will be increased, thus compensating for the necessary velocity of the balls, as they gain the required centrifugal force.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and .desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In combination with a governor, the adjustable sleeve B, constructed and arranged, in relation to the stand A, and head C, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The adjustable head O, with the cross G, and bars H, and ball-arms, arranged in connection therewith, substantially as shown and described.
