Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April .20, 1909.
Application filed July 7, 1908. Serial No. 442,297.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE W. LYEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Trinidad, in the county of Las Animas and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Derricks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to derricks designed for the purpose of loading and unloading hay and stacking the same and for other purposes, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a device of this character which can be readily operated by one horse and one man.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, compact, strong, durable and efficient lifting device for various materials which will operate smoothly and quickly and will require but little power to operate the These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a derrick made in accordance with my invention, the carrier or fork being in its lowermost position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation and partial section of the same with the boom raised to a horizontal position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the derrick shown in its upper position with the carrier tilted to dump the load. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line l4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a platform or base provided with a cross bar 2 in which is pivoted a mast 3. The platform 1 is provided with diagonal braces 4 which converge at their upper ends and are provided with a cross piece 5 through which the mast 3 extends. Connected to the mast 3 is a rotating device comprising two members 6 connected together by a hinge 7 and provided with a suitable latch 8 for holding the members in operative position. Connected to the members 6 are the radial arms 9 which are operable by hand to turn the mast 3. The rotating device may be readily removed from the mast by disengaging the latch 8. A boom 10 is connected to the mast by means of a hook 11 and a screw eye 12. To raise and lower the boom 10 a suitable pulley 13 is connected near the outer end thereof, and a rope or cable 14 se cured at 15 to the mast 3 is led around the pulley 13 and back to the mast and around 1 rope or cable.

A carrier or fork 22 is pivotally connected to the frame 19, said carrier being shown as a fork com- 1 prising a series of tines held together and spaced apart by a suitable means. A yoke 23 extends upward from the inner end of the fork 22, and a spiral spring 241 is connected at one end to the yoke 23, and its opposite end is connected to the frame 19. A spring tripping device.25 secured to a cross bar 26 on the frame 19 engages the inner end of the Suspended from the boom 10 fork 22 to hold the latter in a substantially horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2. A. rope or cable 27 is connected to the trip and passed around pulleys 28 and 29, said rope or cable extending to a position within easy reach of the operator. Supporting bars 30 extend from the fork 22 to the boom 10.
An automatically operating drop fork 31 is provided with a series of tines 32 and connected to abar or bars 33 pivotally connected at 34 to the boom. A pair of brace bars 35 are connected to the boom at one end, and their opposite ends are connected to the frame 19. A rope or cable 36 is connected to the drop rake or fork 31 and passed over a pulley 37 mounted in a bracket 38 secured to the boom 10. The rope or cable 36 from thence passes over a pulley 39 carried by the boom 10, and upon the lower end of the rope or cable 36 a suitable counterbalancing weight 40 is secured. The weight of the drop fork 31 is just suflicient to overcome the effect of the weight 10 and to normally drop to the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing until the boom 10 has been raised to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2, at which time said weight is pulled down by the operator to raise the drop fork before discharging the load from the fork 22.
The operation of my invention will be understood without more extended descrip tion.
My invention is simple in construction, can not readily get out of order and is strong, durable and efficient in use.
I claim 1. A derrick comprising a rotatable mast, a boom hinged to the mast, aframe connected to the boom, a fork pivoted to the frame, a
tripping device for holding said fork in operative position, a rope or cable for operating said trip, and a drop rake pivoted to the boom and provided with a cord and counterweight.
