Speciicationof Letters Patent. lI-)plicationv led February 13, 1909.v
Patented April 20, 1909. 'Seria1No- 477,492.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. SPRAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, county of Franklin, and State of Massachusetts, have invented 'an Improvement in Trousers, of which the `following description, in connection with the accompany# ing drawing, is a speciiication, like numerals on the drawing representing like parts.
' This invention relates to trousers and particularly to the belt strap thereof, and the object of the invention is to rovide a novel construction of belt strap W ch presents a much neater appearance than belt straps as ordinarily made.
I will iirst describe one embodiment ofmy invention and then point out the novel features thereof in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view showing trousers embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing the manner of cutting the material at the waist band of the trousers to form the tabs to sew the belt strap to Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the manner in which the tabs are bent outwardly after being slit; Fig. 4 is a view showing one way in whichthe belt strap may be applied; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4E showing a modilication of the invention; Fig. 6 is an enlarged front view of a portion of the trousers with the belt strap in place; Fig. 7 is a view similar to Figs. 4 and 5 showing still another modication of the invention. y
It is now the universal practice to sew belt straps to the outside of the trousers and usually the upper end of the strap is carried over the top of the waist band of the trousers and is sewed to the inside of the waist band.
My invention aims to provide a novel construction by which/the sewing that secures the belt stra in place may be entirely concealed or at Teast made so inconspicuous as not to be observable. I accomplish this end by slitting the material of the Vtrousers at the waistband to form openings into which the ends of the belt strap may be inserted, and then I sew the ends of the belt Strap to tabs which are located on the inside face of the cloth of the trousers. I iind it convenient and practicable to make the tabs by forming in the material of the trousers V-shaped slits and then bending the slitted portion inwardly to form the tab. This construction has the I advantage that. the exposed edge of theslit is not a raw edge and is therefore not liable to ravel. i
Referring now more particularly to the drawings 3 designates the trousers generally and 4 the belt strap. l
In making a pair of trousers in accordance with my invention I form slits 5 in the material 3 of the trousers and then insert the ends of the belt strap l into said slits so that the ends are hidden behind the cloth of the trousers, as clearly Seen in Fig. 4. The tabs to which the ends of the belt strap are secured may conveniently be formed by bending in the slit portion 6 of the trousers, as shown in Fig. 3, and this is especially practicable where the slits are V-shaped, as shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the belt strap may be sewed to the tabs by stitches 7 that extend only through the tabs and the belt strap, as shown in Fig. 4, or by stitches 8 which pass through both the tab and the body or cloth 3 of the trousers and the belt strap, as shown in Fig. 5, or the stitches which unite the belt strap to the tabs may extend also through the stay piece or stiften- ,ing member 10 (which is usually a piece of canvas and is commonly placed around the waist band of trousers between the material of the trousers and the lining 11 thereof), as shown in Fig. 7.
In the embodiment of the invention herein shown the only part of the slit which shows or is exposed to view is the edge 12 thereof and this edge is formed by folding the tab back onto the body 3 of the material along the dotted line 13 Fig. 2. There is, therefore, no raw edge exposed to view and a belt strap thus made presents an exceedingly neat and attractive appearance. Where the belt strap is sewed in the manner shown in Figs. 5 and 7, the line of stitching 8 will be seen but this line of stitching is so close to tle edge 12 of the slit that it is hardly noticea le.
It is not essential to my invention that the slit be of the shape shown herein, although I preferthis form of slit because of the fact that when the slit portion 6 is folded back it not only presents a tab to sew the belt strap to but also makes a finished edge at the only part of the slit that is exposed to view and avoids any danger of this part of the slit being raveled as would be the case if it were a Cir raw, edge. Neither is it essential to my invention that the tab to which the belt strap is sewed should be formed by bending back a slit part of the cloth 3, although this is a preferable embodiment of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :-k
1. In trousers, the combination with the material of the trousers body formed with slitsand tabs on its inner face adjacent the slits, of a belt strap having its ends inserted through the slits and secured to the tabs.
2. A pair of trousers having a pair of V- shaped slits formed in the material thereof at the Waist band, the slit portions being bent inwardly to form tabs, and a belt strap 3, A pair of trousers having a pair of V- i shaped slits formed in the material thereof l at the waist band, the slit portions being bent inwardly to form tabs, and a belt strap having its ends inserted through said slits, and stitches extending through the material of the trousers, the tabs and the belt strap for securing said belt strap to the tabs.
In testimony whereof', I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK H. SPRAGUE.
