rApplication ledrDecembcr 26, 1907. Serial No. 408,135.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 20, 1909.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Fnnnnnion C. Sonor.- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, inthe countyv of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Devices for Lubricating Thread or Yarn, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devicesfor lubrieating yarn or thread and has particular reference to lubricating the yarn used in'knit ting stockings or similar fabrics.
The object of my invention is to supply a liquid lubricant in the exact 1 quantity necessary to make the thread loop nicely over the needles when knitting any fabric and to increase or diminish thissupply as may bev required to suitthe purpose and thematerial used. 'i
ln the accompanying drawing Figure 1, isv a side elevation of my device ready to be attached toa knittingmachine. Fig; 2,v isa vertical section through the middle. Fig. 3, is an end elevation and Fig. 4, is a plan view.
A, is the font or reservoir containing' the liquid lubricant, a, a funnel shaped neck on the top of the reservoirf y B, is a frame or extension attached to the reservoir A, and has secured therein on opposite sides, theeyelets l), b, through which the yarn passes. n
C, C, are four arms or supports to which the clamps c, c, are secured by means of the ,screws d, d.
D, is the wick held in position by the clamps c, c, and extending. downward through the funnel shaped `neck a, into the lubricant; this wick l prefer to have doubled over in the manner shown, but it may bel used lsingle if desired. rlhe wick may be raised or lowered slightly by bending the clamp holding arms C, C, up or down or the device may be provided with a wick raising` device similar to that used in lamps. y v
E, is the yarn passing throughthe eyelets b, b, and going from thence directly to a knit-` ting machine or to awinding machine; t', is an opening orhole in the top of the frame B, through which a hook or screw is Ainsertedy for attaching the device to a stocking machine.
After being constructed in the manner shown and filled with a proper liquid lubricant the operationisfas follows: The devicev is attached to the knitting machine by any convenient means and the thread or-yarn E, is inserted through the eyelets l), l), and the end passed` on' to the knitting machine. When the knitting machine is put into operation the yarn will pass over the top of the wick D,taking up the lubricant 5 if too much -of the lubricant is absorbed, the screws d, d,
are tightened so that less will be taken up by the wick g if lenough oil is not taken up by the yarn as it passes over the wick, the screws d, d, are loosened slightly. A similar result may be obtained by raising or lowering the wick, but the nicest adjustment is secured by `turning the set screws so as to tighten or loosen the holdv of theclamps c, c, on the wick D. When the flow of the oil is regulated by the clamps the tension on the yarn is not interfered with as would be the case if the wick `was raised or lowered. The funnel shaped neck a, will catch any drip that falls from the thread as it passes over the wick and convey it back yinto the reservoir A.
` Having thus described my invention what l claim as Vnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. ln'a thread or yarn lubricating device, a reservoir having an upwardly extending funnel `shaped fdrip catching neck, a wick holder above said reservoir, a wick in said wickholder having its upper portion projecting above said holder and its lower end extending down through said funnel-shaped neck into said reservoir, screws connecting thef opposite sides of .said wick holder to move them positively and `unyieldingly toward and from each other for the purpose ol' regulating the flow of lubricant to the upper portion of said wick, and thread or yarn guides so positioned that the thread or yarn passing therethrough will bear lightly on the tending funnel-shape drip-catching neck, and an upwardly extending tri-angular shaped bracket secured to said reservoir, a
wick holder` positioned above said reservoir and connected therewith, screws connecting the opposite sides with said wick holder to cause the same to move toward or from each other, whereby a wick held in said holder,
lubricating device Y and extending into said reservoir, may be so l ln testimony whereof I allx my signature compresse?L tlli the l 1 W eil lubieant to ghe in presence of two witnesses.
