Be it known that I, CHARLES J. MONA- MARA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dyeing-Machines, of which the following is a specifichtion.
This invention relates to dyeing machines, and more particularly to machines for dyeing yarn, the object being to provide a machine with a reciprocating dye stick frame, so that the yarn will be moved back and forth in the dye vat.
Another object of my invention is to provide very novel means for rotating the dye sticks at the same time they are reciprocated, whereby the yarn will be submerged in the dye in the vat.
Another object of my invention is to provide very novel means for operating the dye sticks, so that the sticks will rotate in opposite directions in respect to each other.
A further object of my invention is to provide novel means for reciprocating the dye sticks so that they will move back and forth smoothly at a moderate rate of speed.
A further object of my invention is to pro vide a machine which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction, the parts being so arranged and connected that they are not likely to get out of order in use. 7
These objects are obtained by the novel arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved machine. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section through my improved machine. Fig. 3, is a transverse section. Fig. 4, is a detail section through the sleeve and connecting member, and Fig. 5, is a detail section through the arm and sleeve carrying the bevel gear.
In the drawings A, indicates a substantially rectangular shaped vat, the sides of which are provided with Outwardlyprojecting flanges A, at their upper edges forming tracks, on which is adapted to be mounted a substantially rectangular shape dye stick frame 0, the side bars of which are provided with recesses in their under sides, in which are mounted rollers B, adapted to travel on the tracks so that the frame can be moved freely backwardly and forwardly.
The side bars of the frame are provided with a plurality of bearings C, in their up er edges, in which are mounted the roundbd ends of square dye sticks E, having gears F, secured on one end, for the purpose hereinafter fully described. The rounded ends of the dye sticks are smaller in diameter on the side provided with the gears F than on the opposite, but this is a matter of detail and in no way affects my invention.
The cross bar 0 of the frame 0, is slidably mounted in the side bars as clearly shown in Fig. 3, so that it can be; readily removed when the frame is placed on a stand, so that the sticks can be easily detached.
Secured to one end of the vat A, is a pair of brackets G, in which is mounted a crank shaft H, carrying a pitinan red I, provided with a hooked end 1, adapted to fit in an opening formed in the enlarged opening of the cross bar J, secured between the side bars of the frame at one end, 'which enables the link to be readily connected or disconnected as desired. 1 j
A pulley H, is secured on one end of a shaft H, over which is adapted to travel a drive belt H from a suitable motor, not shown. The other end'of the shaft is provided with a beveled gear H adapted to mesh with the bevel gear K, carried by a sleeve K, loosely mounted in an arm L, which is provided with a slotted plate portion through which extends a bolt L, securedin the side of the vat. A lever L is pivotally mounted on the side of the vat adjacent the arm L, and is connected to the plate portion of the same, so that the arm can be readily adjusted vertically. The side of the vat is provided with a plurality of openings L through which a pin L is adapted to pass for locking the arm in its adjusted posit on, as will be hereinafter fully described. A similar arm M, provided with a slotted plate portion 0, is mounted on a bolt 0 secured in the side of the vat adjacent the other end, and is adjusted vertically by a lever 0 and locked in its adjusted position by a pin 0, adapted to fit in one of the openings 0", formed in the vat. Mounted in the arm M, is a shaft P, which is provided with oppositely disposed longitudinal ribs 1?", at its end, which fit in longitudinal oppositely disposed grooves K formed in the sleeve If, so that the shaft can be reciprocated at the same time it is rotated.
A sleeve Q, is keyed on the end of the shaft P, on which is loosely mounted a collar Q, provided with a hook Q adapted to fit in a staple Q secured to one of the side bars of the dye stick supporting frame, so that the shaft will be reciproeated in unison with the frame.
Secured on the shaft 1, is a plurality of worm gears X, oppositely arranged, adapted to mesh with gears of the dye sticks so that the sticks will be rotated in opposite directions to each other as clearly shown.
The side bars of the dye stick frame C, are provided with strips It, on the outer sides, adapted to extend down below the flanged sides of the vat, so as to hold the frame on the track as it is reciprocated.
By forming the dye stick square, the yarn will be drawn upwardly without any danger of it slipping. It will be seen that by having the arms carrying the shaft P, adjustable, the worm gears can be thrown out of engagement with the gears of the dye sticks so that the frame can reciprocate without causing thesticks to rotate.
The operation of the machine is as follows 1-Skeins of yarn are placed on the dye sticks, it of course,being understood that the vat is filled with dye, and by operating the crank shaft, the dye stick frame will be reciprocated by the pitman rod and at the same time the shaft P, will be reciprocated and rotated so as to cause the stick to rotate through the medium of the gears, which will turn the skeins on the same and it will be seen that as the frame is reciprocated back and forth, the yarn will be drawn slowly through the dye, so as to agitate the same to a certain extent, thereby producing an even color on all the yarn.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is 1. Amachine of the kind described com prising a dye vat, a frame slidably mounted on said vat carrying a plurality of dye sticks provided at their ends with gears, a rotatable crank shaft having a connecting rod engaging with said slidable frame, the end of said shaft engaging with gears adapted to rotate said dye sticks as the shaft is rotated.
2. A machine of the kind described comprising a dye vat, a frame slidably mounted on said vat carrying a plurality of dye sticks provided with gears, a shaft provided with worm gears meshing with sa d gears and means for reciprocating said frame together with means for reciprocating and rotating said shaft.
3. In a machine of the kind described, the combination with a dye vat, of a frame provided with rollers mounted on said vat, dye sticks mounted 111 said frame provided with gears, means for reciprocating said frame, a
shaft provided with worm gears meshing with said gears of the dye sticks, and means for rotating and reciprocating said shaft.
4'. In a machineof the kind described, the combination with a dye vat provided with tracks, of a frame provided with rollers mounted on said track, bearings formed in said frame, square dye sticks provided with reduced rounded ends mounted in said bearings, gears secured on one end of said sticks, a reciprocating shaft provided with worm gears meshing with said gears, and means for rotating and reciprocating said shaft to gether with means for reciprocating said frame. r
5. In a machine of the kind described, the combination with a dye vat provided with tracks, of a frame slidably mounted on said tracks, a plurality of dye sticks mounted in said frame provided with gears, arms adj ustably mounted on the sides of said vat, a shaft mounted in said arms carrying a plurality of worm gears meshing with the gears of the dye sticks, means for connecting said shaft to said frame and means for reciprocating said frame and rotating said shaft.

In a machine of the kind described, the combination with a dye vat provided with flanged sides, of a rectangular frame mounted on said sides, provided with a plurality of bearings, dye sticks revolubly mounted 011 said bearings, gears secured on said sticks, a shaft provided with worm gears meshing with said gears, means for connecting said shaft to said frame, a crank shaft carrying a pitman rod connected to said frame provided with a beveled gear, and a bevel gear meshing with said gears for rotating said shaft.

In a machine of the kind described, the combination with a dye vat provided with tracks, of a frame slidably mounted on said track, dye sticks revolubly mounted on said frame provided with gears, arms adjustably mounted on the side of said vat, a sleeve mounted in one of said arms provided with a a gear, and oppositely disposed grooves, a
